Elliot Brooks the many more points of view from the second book really did take me out of the story. I loved Eli and victors story so much and didn’t really care about anyone else outside of their little groups so the second one kind of dragged to me. I am excited for the third book though if it happens. I really hope Eli isn’t fully gone and will come back to life or regenerate a heart or whatever he needs to do.
I read Vicious and I’m still contemplating whether to read Vengeful or not. I’ve seen that it’s not as good as the first one and there are many new characters introduced where the focus isn’t on Victor and Eli as much as the first book. However, I really like how V.E Schwab writes the side characters’ backstories in short chapters where I’m not bored reading about them or how they met the main characters. In Vicious, I was happy those chapters ended quickly and we moved on to the main characters/ plot lines.
I liked it better as well. There is a slight shift away from Victor, but we get Eli’s past, which I really enjoyed, and the newest characters were interesting to me :)

Honestly, V.E. Schwab's characters are so intriguing, I rooted for 3 out of 4 main characters in Vengeful, although they're all supposed to be "villains" and I knew it would hurt me in the end. And it did.
OMG!!! I watch your videos even though I do not read fantasy books because I just enjoy watching you and your husband talk about them, but I’m about 50 pages away from finishing Vicious, so I’m so happy to finally watch a video of yours having read the book! Can’t wait for Vengeful next!
Elliot Brooks I loved a lot of the earlier things...the college classroom scenes, his blacking out the text in his parents books, and the discussions and trials and errors to become EOs, etc. Once the action started, I felt like the heightened pace took away a lot of the charm.
Love both books, I didn't find the split time line hard to follow, if you've watched arrow or lost its similar with its slow reveals. Got to say think the uk covers are much nicer though
I enjoyed both Vicious and Vengeful very much. One of the reasons was the fact that nothing was clean cut black and white, good fighting against evil. Schwab's writing style is gripping and REFRESHING is the exact same word I would use too!

I honestly am really surprised so many people disliked the second. I think if you’re expecting it to just be Victor and Eli again, you’ll find it’s not just them, but rather it’s them AND other characters. But I liked the new characters, so it worked for me 😊
I'm still torn on picking up vengeful or not. i adored vicious and would loooove to see what v e schwab did in vengeful, but the ending of vicious was just perfect to me like ahhh i don't know :/
I didn’t like the Darker Shade trilogy at all so one of my questions was how different this was from that since I liked her writing style. It was more the execution of her concept that I didn’t like. I was glad to see you write in another reply this is extremely different so I might try Schwab again. 👍
I really didn't enjoy that series either. It had an interesting premise, but it really fell flat, probably because of the characters. The first book was okay enjoyable, but the second and third were just not good. And I tried reading the Monsters of Verity as well, but no go. So even if people say Vicious is Schwab's best work, I'm super skeptical. I think her books just aren't for me.

Vicious I found to be an amazingly tight well-written story with a great premise, and Vengeful I found to be completely unnecessary, sometimes quite boring and not really engaging. Overall I'd say Vicious is a must read and Vengeful should be skipped because it basically is the first book again but without the charm and intrigue. I know the author says it was always planned to be a sequel but it really feels like Vicious was so successful it wasn't allowed to be the stand alone it was written as.
I remember at an event V E Schwab said that she herself had pushed for a sequel because, to her, the ending of Vicious was always a cliffhanger. But she intentionally wrote it in a way that it would be satisfying enough if it didn't get a sequel. This was following one of her series - the Archive - getting cancelled and she didn't want that happening again.

Vicious was fun, but I found that the aspects of it I found most interesting and compelling were the things she glossed over the most.

Yeah, she said it’s always been a trilogy before the success, but you can just read the first if you’d like. I personally liked Vengeful better 🤷🏻♀️
