My husband and I recently bought a house that needed completely repainted inside. We wanted to save money and paint it ourselves. I’ve always been a horrible, splattery painter, so I thought I’d do myself a favor and watch some videos. When I stumbled across your videos, I felt like I hit the jackpot. You explain everything so clearly, and the steps you give are easy to follow. Thank you!
Holy crap! I never knew what the curved part of a 5 in1 tool was for! Thank you so much for this video and your other videos as well !!...you have really improved my painting skills tremendously!! I cleaned my rollers and brushes today like you showed me and my rollers and brushes look better than ever! I used to just throw away my rollers before and I never knew how much paint I was wasting by not using the 5in1 tool to Express the paint out!!...thank you so much!!!
I just used your tips for clean up in my sink and it worked great. The brush cleaning was the same just did it under running water. The small roller I cleaned with my kitchen sprayer but I turned the roller so that it was vertical and the flying water from the spinning simply hit the sides of my sink. Worked great. Thanks for the tips.
You are the best!!! I've been painting home renovations for 11 years and doing it all wrong. Just bought a new house. This one, I'll do right. Thank you!!!
Okay, I have to share how I do it and somewhat adapted Your method. For a brush, rinse it thoroughly with water pressure, from a sink, on both sides, and use a metal wire brush to remove chunks and funk of paint. Shake it once gently to expel water and lightly use the wire Brush to comb The bristles so they are uniform in the right direction. Rollers, Rinse via hose or sink after scraping it with 5n1 tool like Chris does. To dry, I use an air compressor to spin it dry, and wow, it works great. You're the man Chris!
who knew.. I have been doing it that way for years. for the exception if the bucket.. makes sense... beautiful, and I recently learned about scraping the roller. I LOVE PAINTING...
Forever in your debt! I never knew what the rounded part was for on a 5 in 1 tool before, so I never bought one. Got the bulk of paint out of the rollers and then used it to get the rest out in the sink with some hot water since we don't have an outside spigot. Then instead of a sprayer, I hit them with 120 psi from the compressor and a blow gun attachment. I estimate it was less than three minutes total, and they were all nearly dry as I was surrounded by a pretty heavy mist of water. You saved me at least a half hour of work. Thank you!
what I love about you guys is that there's no annoying music or sounds and you get to the point and do it quickly. I've painted a lot in my life but I keep on learning easier ways to do it. Thanks to you guys who put out these awesome videos.
Thank you brother for the upload. Some simple math for the folks that may not know....pulling the rollers comes in handy. When the job is done, it is a courtesy the leave some for the customer for future touch ups. As a contractor, there may not be a lot of paint left over, so this will reflect good on the job you do. I really enjoyed you showing the hose cleaning method. I might add to that by saying I find it helpful to half remove the nap, rinse inside the nap as well. Foot tapping or spinning, make sure the brush is not too wet when you case it. It is paper after all, and most know that a well taking care of brush out lives its case. As always, I enjoy your videos, and my prayers to you and yours. God bless. Cliff
I work in Arkansas with my uncle who has been painting for 40 years, ive learned the very same tricks from him. Pretty neat how these kinds of things are learned by different painters in different places and over different generations
Hey oregon painter Joe here, I found the secret hack...at least for brushes, boiling hot water to clean first then take hair conditioner to it and after use a hair straightener to make it new again, i took a 10 year old 4 incher that sat outside hardened with paintnand it worked.
I'm soon to retire from the corporate world. I have always enjoyed painting. Your videos make me want to start up a small painting company. I'm going to Thailand and Australia first. New subscriber Joe from Indianapolis.
this is the best hack! clean up is a breeze!! I've seen a good majority of your videos and used your techniques. It has made my painting project very easy. I'm currently painting a 2200 sq ft home freshly renovated. FYI I prefer a 4 inch brush for cut in vs a 2.5 inch.
Chris, you are the BEST! I have learned SO MUCH from your videos, and now consider myself a pretty darn good painter thanks to you! Keep up the great work!
Well I will stopping tmrw morning to buy a brass hose fitting like that. Usually takes me 10 minutes to clean my 9" rollers with just a free running hose. Great idea Chris, thanks because I dispised cleaning rollers lol. U make it look easy here.
I’ve all ways used a bucket to was my rollers out putting it in front of me but sitting it straight up. But will be trying that way today for sure. Awesome tip. Down from the south GA
Hello Chris, thank you very much for all your videos, I love my job as a painter and enjoy to do it, watching you doing this shows how much you like your job and passionate about it, I hope you continue to have success in everything you do, I have learned many tricks from you, thanks! Keep it up with the quality job!
I saw a guy awhile back on a video add flood up by the farrel of his brush to the bristles, and it kept the paint from drying out while you're painting with it all day. It was so much easier to clean! I just get a little on my finger a couple times wipe it about an inch down from the barrel of the brush and it really helps the paint from drying up while I'm working.. (Flood is a paint additive to help prolong the drying process, in turn letting the paint lay flatter as it dries)
As one who has always hated having to paint I learned several professional skills and tips to make my upcoming painting project much easier. Thank you and now I can’t wait to try my hand on doing a paint job better and easier!
Chris up north we always use a bucket when we clean our Roller. Either like you did it or setting the bucket upside down and hiding behind the bucket. The main reason we use a bucket that way up North is because lots of times it is cold outside and we don't want to get wet at all. In Hawaii no one has seen the bucket technique they just spray the roller at an angle and still stay dry not fearing getting a little wet which we usually don't. We also remove the roller and clean the frame and inner core. If you don't clean inside after a couple of uses it will get stuck. When cleaning a brush we use our knife to spread the bristles exposing the epoxy in the Farrell of the brush then we place a hose inside of the blush spraying directly on to the epoxy that holds the bristles in place deep within the brush. I have chinex bristle brushes that are 4 years old and not the slightest bit hard at the ferrel. Thanks for your informative videos.👍👍
If you use your roller everyday, and use the same colour when rolling, no need to clean it everytime, just get a new garbage bag and wrap it around the roller head, open up the bag and insert the roller just before the end of the roller and turn, like that it will remain moist for the next day. Great tips by the way.
Im a young painter started my own company and ty for all the tips i would love to pick your brain sometime but im sure your busy your busy i live in new England i was thinking about doing a RUclips channel like this also .anyways thanks alot i have been following your channel for awhile and will continue to do just that thank so much
I think I saw your original version of drying/cleaning rollers/brushes a few years ago. Wonderful tip especially for rollers although I found it rather challenging when it was 20 below zero! Used rubber gloves. And, by the way, your videos have improved a lot and remain incredibly informative. Thanks for all the posts.
This was extremely helpful! I’m new to painting having just purchased a home and the colors were not to my liking. I finally painted my hall bathroom and look forward to painting more rooms. Thank you so very much!
Wonderful video! Thank you. I learned so much from watching this one video and will start on your others. Another tip- for latex paint, try to use only lukewarm water to wash out the brushes as hot water or cold water can set up the paint (I'm an artist and this is what I do with my fine art brushes). Also I just learned never to wash my paint tools in the sink (I see you wash outside-perfect!) when you have a septic system. Never connected the problems that might cause until this week. I feel, like, Duh!
I just used latex paint to paint a door to a utility room, then thought of washing the brushes in the sink. I am glad I didn't do that because my house has a septic system. What kind of problem did it cause? Thanks!
Great video, Chris. One quick tip on cleaning heavily loaded brushes. It's always hard to get all the paint out of the ferrel without numerous rinsing. Fill your bucket about half way full and pump the brush up and down like a piston in a car engine. This makes quicker work of cleaning your brush so it runs crystal clear. I have brushes I bought in the early 90"s that are still in great shape! Rewrapping brushes in the cover after cleaning is essential! Great point. Also liked the Scripture reference. Thanks again!
this video is how I found your channel and became a subscriber your videos really teach me alot thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience
Hey buddy, I've just started to watch your videos today and find them helpful. Thank you. I noticed the scripture you have in some of your videos, I assume that you're a christian man? God bless.
Hey man I have to say you make it fun to watch paint videos I like how you cut info in and make it very informative it's a great help to the average homeowner like myself..thanks
I have a 5 in one tool and had no idea how to use the big carve out until today. Thank! Am looking for info on how to get a dried up roller rolling easily again. Been trying to yank off the cage but its stuck on pretty good
LOL, I just tried that a couple of days ago with a 3000 PSI pressure washer. I hadn't figured out the angle in the bucket you showed and didn't quite expect that much violent spin, so I had to throw my clothes in the washer. That roller was about 4 inches in diameter in no time!
Chris love your videos, you are a gifted teacher. I personally like to use a "spinner" to clean my rollers and brushes. Check it out next time you go to the paint store. I picked mine up at Sherwyn Williams.
I use a plastic grout brush to clean my paint brushes as it is not as harsh on the bristles as the wire brush, then when all paint is washed out I run a brush comb through the bristles to keep them straight .
I paint for a living, and it's amazing how many people think brushes are disposable. I personally dunt wash out naps, because you can just drop it into the 5 gallon bucket of the paint that's left.
As a Pro Painter, I use brushes and rollers every day. I usually soak my rollers for 2-3 days in a 5 gallon pail, then refresh the water and repeat the process for a bout 1 week total. There will be residue on the bottom, but will be less each time you clean out the pail, It will be minerals and properties of the mixture. Spin it dry after a good rinse, let it completely dry over night, and use a lint roller to get any loose bristles and will last for many more paint jobs.
Great idea for the 5 gallon bucket at the shield but as any brush manufacture will tell you you should never use a wire brush causes too much damage on the filaments shortens the life of your brush
A good brush can last a long time anyway. Cheap brushes will fall apart, the glue gives way, and the bristles come out of the handle. Wire brushing saves time cleaning good brushes.
after I clean my rushes, I twirl them with a twirling tool then I use a comb to comb and adjust bristles back to their normal painting position then either use original brush cover or sometimes I will use tin foil if the original cover is no longer usable
I have a hose attachment to do just this. 4 inch across plastic tube 12 or 14 inches tall on its own stand. Drop the roller in and clip in, switch on hose and the water jets down the inside spray, spin and clean the roller. Sit in middle of lawn and run till water comes out clean. Can't remember where I got it from, but wish I'd bought 2 now as feet broken, still works though.
Fun tip. I use an air compressor to spin out the water out of the roller just like you did with the water hose- same thing. Comes out super clean and dry and the nap is perfect for using again.
Cool sneakers didn’t realize till now painters don’t need steel toes👍 I’m changing to paint from electrical starting the day I’ve seen all your videos twice
i like to run the paint brush comb on my brush a few times ... them work in some dawn dish soap and let it sit while i clean up my roller ... then i soak the brush with cold water for a few minutes and then start combing it out as i run cold water on it ! ( hot water turns latex paint into a gluey mess )
I have been spinning my rollers clean this way for years! Never thought to use a 5 gallon bucket that way. What do you say to people who complain about the "paint water" on the ground?
Just run enuff water so its clear on top of the grass. If by chance paint dries on the grass just xplain to the owner that 1nce the lawn is mowed the painted grass will dissapear🤗🇺🇸
I never clean brushes or rollers at a customers house I just throw them in a bucket of water til i get home. But i live in a desert so i allways clean my pump. Nice lawn or not. I do save the dirtiest water in a 5 to dump at home though.
My husband and I recently bought a house that needed completely repainted inside. We wanted to save money and paint it ourselves. What a difference between your old videos and the new ones..
It’s just so good watching and learning from your tips, thank you !

You can also use the same brass tip on a old school spray nozzle.
The brass tip will screw right on the threaded tip of the spray nozzle.

LOL, I just tried that a couple of days ago with a 3000 PSI pressure washer. I hadn't figured out the angle in the bucket you showed and didn't quite expect that much violent spin, so I had to throw my clothes in the washer. That roller was about 4 inches in diameter in no time!

Great idea for the 5 gallon bucket at the shield but as any brush manufacture will tell you you should never use a wire brush causes too much damage on the filaments shortens the life of your brush
Dave Hicks what should you use?
I agree a brush comb an tiny bit of soap does better
A good brush can last a long time anyway. Cheap brushes will fall apart, the glue gives way, and the bristles come out of the handle. Wire brushing saves time cleaning good brushes.
Learning loads! Thank you! 😁
Fantastic!

after I clean my rushes, I twirl them with a twirling tool then I use a comb to comb and adjust bristles back to their normal painting position then either use original brush cover or sometimes I will use tin foil if the original cover is no longer usable
The brush spinner wears out your brushes alot faster. They lose their shape by fraying outwards. I stopped using a spinner 20 yrs ago.

I always wondered if I could use a wire brush to clean my brushes near the ferule. Thanks
Yeah that what im doing and works well
Fun tip. I use an air compressor to spin out the water out of the roller just like you did with the water hose- same thing. Comes out super clean and dry and the nap is perfect for using again.

i like to run the paint brush comb on my brush a few times ... them work in some dawn dish soap and let it sit while i clean up my roller ... then i soak the brush with cold water for a few minutes and then start combing it out as i run cold water on it ! ( hot water turns latex paint into a gluey mess )
This tip rocked!!
Its harder with a window cleaning bucket.
I went to home Depot for the wire brush just now. Had a better deal on BBQ wire brush. Like a buck cheaper . And stainless too.
Just food for thought.
I have been spinning my rollers clean this way for years! Never thought to use a 5 gallon bucket that way. What do you say to people who complain about the "paint water" on the ground?
Same here.
when I was working with paint. I would dig a hole in the dirt, clean brushes and rollers, then fill in the hole.
It depends on the person I work for.. if the house is totally spotless I never clean my equipment at the customer’s home.
Just run enuff water so its clear on top of the grass. If by chance paint dries on the grass just xplain to the owner that 1nce the lawn is mowed the painted grass will dissapear🤗🇺🇸
I never clean brushes or rollers at a customers house
I just throw them in a bucket of water til i get home. But i live in a desert so i allways clean my pump. Nice lawn or not. I do save the dirtiest water in a 5 to dump at home though.
