  • Walk with us as we fight chronic disease in Aboriginal communities - HopeforHealth.com.au/donate
NE Arnhem Land has the worst preventative illness rates in Australia and the world. Hope for Health is a locally led charitable initiative and an opportunity for you to have a direct impact on the ground in much needed health transformation and illness prevention work.
This year has seen the Steering Committee and staff re-commence the program on Elcho Island in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and Doherty Institute, who are evaluating the program and its effects.
We have seen a lot of change within the community between our last retreats in 2019 and our two retreats this year. COVID-19 had a huge inter-cultural impact between Balanda and Yolngu. Mixed messaging from experts and the government combined with poor translation and enforced lock-downs and restrictions on travel, widened the inter-cultural divide for many and added to the challenge of running a health program. Mistrust, confusion about health and a general disinterest across the community towards initiatives here is the feedback we’ve had from Yolngu and Balanda alike.
Whilst these issues contributed to making this year difficult, they also really underscore the importance of our mission - ‘empowering Yolngu vitality’ and walking together arm in arm. We need more Australian’s to understand the difficulties faced by the families up here.
Like your’s and mine, families here are full of excitement, sorrow, love, pain, energy and exhaustion. We need more people to walk with us on this journey and so we are launching our #WALKWITHUS campaign. To raise funds and build networks that support the efforts made here, we need you to walk with us as we fight chronic disease in community.
Why? Because among our communities at least:
    - 1 in 2 have Hypertension and Renal Disease
    - 1 in 4 have Diabetes
    - 1 in 3 have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
    - Chronic disease accounts for 80% of the 12 year mortality gap
