    Got a similar one, and actually have used it this year, to diagnose that a distributor module was intermittent, and not generating a spark all the time. Solved by removing it, and replacing the brittle plastic connector, with some tape and epoxy, to hold the internal wiring from the pick up coil from shorting out to the body. New units were only 2 days wait, surprising for a vehicle close to 30 years old, and where they were never actually imported in great numbers, but the parts are very common for Opel, GM, Holden and Daewoo for that era, and even though the vehicles are getting long in the tooth, they are still running around in good numbers, and are still quite reliable as well.
    Last use was a year ago, VW Kombi with a 2Y engine transplant, a very common thing to make them get up and go, normally going from the 1600 air cooled engine, to a 2.2litre water cooled Toyota engine. Not the easiest thing though to change spark plugs on then, especially as this was the camper conversion, and you had to use a screwdriver to remove large sections of interior paneling and furniture, to get to the steel covers over the engine first. Service becomes a one day affair, though there is a panel you flip open, after moving the mattress, so you can check the oil, and give it the obligatory fill. Of course, being VW Kombi, and still having the factory brake system, stopping was more a matter of climb and hope, seeing as it was exactly the same hydraulic, non power assist, system, with 4 drum brakes, the original 1930's era Beetle came out with.

    Ive got the exact same one and it looks in better condition than the one your looking at. It was last used in the year 1999 and worked perfectly back then and i expect if i fired it up it would still work perfectly.

    fascinating construction - they made artful use of all the available space in the casing. interesting to note that the power transistor says "ITALY" on its casing.

    I had a 84 Toyota, that was the last vehicle that I used a timing light. Fun times to work on vehicles back in the day.

    I have the exact unit, although maybe a couple of years older. It also quit with the same symptoms (no squeal) and the switch checks good, long with the wires. I am going to look for a schematic and parts list to see if I can get it going again.

      I accidentally pulled the inductive pickup off mine yesterday.
      Don’t suppose you would show me the inside of your pickup?

    old school snapon by the time i started fixing cars at a gm and honda dealership you realy didnt need a timing light unless the engine was a basket case or came in tapered with. but i rarely used one the computer would compensate if you were close. and if i did engine work and had to pull the distributor all you would have to do is mark it twice where it was clamped down and when you pulled it mark the position of the rotor

      I called a few years ago and they were still fixing those things... for like $200. I should call again and see if there's a diagram or parts list still available.

    One is not likely to need one of these often, unless you own a pre-1990 Fiat. Then, You need it a lot.

    Could you get a free replacement from Snap On since they are guaranteed for life aren't they?

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 Год назад

      Snap-on does NOT have lifetime warranty on electronics. They will do repairs at about 50% of the current price... which is near $400 these days. IOW, a $200 repair.
