I swear to all the music gods that there is literally no other vocalist in rock & roll history who could pull off singing these lyrics. The day these three guys came together should be noted and celebrated every year with festivals. Neil's early lyrics needed Geddy's voice, and Geddy and Alex needed Neil's lyrics and percussion around which to create and complete their magics.

Rush's road manager Howard Ungerleider came up with the title at a party. There were two dogs at the party, one a German shepherd and the other a tiny white nervous dog. Howard used to call the shepherd By-Tor because anyone that walked into the house was bitten. The other dog was a snow-dog (white). So from that night on Howard called the pair of dogs "By-Tor and the Snow Dog." The dogs belonged to Rush's manager. “We must have been high one day, imagining a song about these two dogs. And then Neil went ahead and wrote it. But the guys at our record company weren’t happy. They signed the band that was on the first album, and they said, ‘This is not the same - what is this By-tor shit? You were talking about Working Man and now you’re talking about this crazy stuff.’ It was a bit of hiccup in the plan they had for us. … The title of the first part of By-tor and the Snow Dog is a mystery to all three members of Rush. Geddy: “I don’t know what ‘tobes’ are. I assumed that Neil knew, and there must be such a place in mythology. I just went with it.” Alex: “I think the Tobes of Hades is kind of like the waiting room to Hell!” Neil: “Nobody know what it means - that’s what I love about it. But it’s something that my friend’s father used to say: ‘It’s hotter than the Tobes of Hades!'”-Geddy, Alex, and Neil, Prog Magazine, Issue 35, April 2013

So I'll get to it once my power turns back on in a few hours. Hope you all still enjoy the reaction! And let's hope we all have a Snow Dog watching over us to make sure By-Tor doesn't escape from hell and try to hurt us. :)

I can hardly wait for your reaction to A Caress of Steele, 2112, and A Farewell To Kings. Once you hear that, you will have the crux of the Rush experience. Their later works are treasures, to be sure, but their earlier works define them and shaped their direction. I believe that A Farewell to Kings was the pivotal album that shaped their sound subsequently. You already heard Hemispheres. That album came right after A Farewell to Kings. So you can see the direction.

Peart’s mark on the band is indicative on this song as they will begin doing a number of long song forms for the next 3 or 4 albums. For this band to have the balls to lay out such a creative mindset and vision is really remarkable. By-tor makes his return in The Necromancer on Caress of Steel but this time he’s the hero.

There was a dog either owned by one of the crew or someone at the studio that was known to be a biter ( By-Tor) & that's how the character came about. It was their 1st attempt at telling a multi-part story. I believe they achieved By Tor's battle sound by distorting Geddy's bass through the amps somehow. On the Vapor Trails tour I think it was they played part of this with a funny animated film. God, I miss those guys.

Yes, one of their managers had two dogs and one was a biter and that was the inspiration for the song. There is a mighty battle going on between them and it does sound like dogs growling.
This is where the prog transition starts, Neil was the missing piece to the picture that is Rush. Love his drumming in this! Check out the live performance of this song from the R30 tour. It is a shorter version but Geddy plays the part of Bytor and Alex is the Snow Dog. They have a lot of fun with it.
    Cheers

It was great when this came out to hear such wildness and since I have always been a fantasy reader it was great to hear a band write songs that were mythical or fantastical. I was reading about all the various mythologies at the time it all fit right in. :)

Their first real longer concept song and boy howdy, is it a GOOD one!! Love the "All the Worlds a Stage" version" live! Holy smokes, the crowd!! Your reaction was priceless during "the battle" sequence. Rinse and repeat 6 times and you will start seeing things like you never have seen them before! Congrats, you get a SUB, today! Great to see younger ones discovering this music. These were the foundations of today's music. Rock and Roll makes you move from its power of that guitar. Hair Metal and Shred came after this, during this time there is no "Autotune" musicians HAD to be VERY GOOD! RUSH was able to pack this perfection up and take it, on the road. The fact that just three people are producing music better than most 5-piece bands, puts RUSH, easily in my Top 3! Great Vid, Thanks

Unfortunately, this is one of "those" songs that resulted in Geddy's voice receiving negative opinions from too many a reviewer. Though it represents both the amalgam and the clash of personalities, the melding and the mashing of influences, yearnings, ambitions and experiences, By-Tor established the fundamental equality within the trio. Skills having been demonstrated to be of matched levels, an inevitable collaboration ensued. The rest, as they say, would give the world a RUSH such as it hadn't previously experienced.
    Lucky world...

This album lost Rush some of their early fans who were hoping for more "Working Man" or "In the Mood" type stuff, but gained them a bunch of new ones. Their next album would confuse a lot of people, but the faithful would be amply rewarded a year later with their next after that.
At the time critics were mostly not fans of Rush's work. Some were offended by the Rand-inspired libertarian lyrics on "Anthem". Some just didn't like prog rock. Quite a few couldn't come to terms with Geddy's voice.

I've seen them live 9 times and got to meet Geddy at a Toronto Maple Leafs game back in the 80's. Wait till you listen to Caress of Steel. If so, I really hope that you will include all the live albums as part of your journey, they contain many of the best tracks ever laid down by the band. In particular, the most amazing version of this song they ever officially recorded...the epic 12 minute long rendition WITH extended psychedelic solo by Alex that Rush recorded live for their All the World's a Stage album from 1976. I think this track may be the greatest live performance that Rush ever officially recorded...full stop...but I am definitely biased. LOL

This album was not a critical success. Critics wrote Rush off as derivative and were pretty brutal with reviews. No shame in that fact because the critics hated Led Zeppelin most of their career too. This was stoner rock at it's finest to everyone I hung out with. Rush was one of those bands that you got turned onto by someone cause they didn't get a ton of radio play either. They got popular by word of mouth . They earned the most dedicated and loyal fan base in rock and roll because they always delivered quality . You never listen to a Rush album and get the feeling they phoned it in.

Waooo!!!....Congratulations my friend John! ...Would you like to reach 4,000 or more subscribers this week?...Well here you have your best gift of your life!!....Today it is very rare to find reactors like you who have never reacted to the best singer in the world, Dimash Kudaibergen, who has 7 octaves and 3 semitones vocal range (An alien)... I am going to dare to recommend that you meet Dimash, because when you do it for the first time, your life as reactor will change forever ....For example, the number of views that you have today, it will increase by 300% in a matter of a few hours and you will get a lot of new subscribers.....But when you react to Dimash, don't do it with his most recent songs ... I recommend that you go to the year 2017 and react to the song that made him a global idol ... I mean the performance he did Dimash from the famous French song called "SOS D'un Terrien en Détresse", when he participated in the famous Chinese reality show The Singer in that year 2017 ... With that performance Dimash earned the reputation of being the best singer on the planet, so I recommend you start with that one...And I have to give you a warning: Never react to The World Best videos, because they suck!...Your life will never be the same again, after reacting for the first time to Dimash...And your first reaction to Dimash will be something very special, so I recommend that you do the best job of your life as a reactor, because that first video will be seen by thousands of people around the world, maybe millions...I hope to see you first reaction soon and if you don't mind, I'd like you to mention me as the person who recommended reacting to Dimash....Here you have the best high quality video of Dimash performing S.O.S. Live 2017.....ruclips.net/video/bDX3FhmyNac/видео.html

The 1981 version doesn’t have the annoying gimmicky garbled sound. Again, it’s just me pointing out the facts oblivious to the everyday Rush fan….
