    Thank you, Mike. Yngwie has one of the best picking technique in term of economy of motion. But he's also known as a bad 'teacher' haha he doesn't seem to care about his technique, or on his own words "If it sounds good it's good. I don't really know what I'm doing but I know what I want to hear".

      @Dreamdancer11 2 года назад +2

      Actually if you pick with a fairly relaxed hand and using economy of motion your picking sorts itself out if that makes sense.Me for example when tried to focus only on relaxation,economy of motion and clarity i realised that i was economy/sweep picking when ascending and mostly alternating when descending...that didnt come by design it came naturally and realised it when viewing myself picking.
      Yes YJM is not a teacher or wishes to be one....you wont hear about pick angles,pickslants,inside outside picking etc etc etc cause he never approached it like that...in his case what he wanted to play(basically emulating the violin)is what developed his technique not the technique developed what he wanted to play....alan holdsworth wanted to emulate the horns ergo his ridiculous smooth legato playing that is unmatched even today.....there was no teacher to painstakingly fix their picking hand angles their floating( or not) hands etc etc etc.....they emulated sounds they wanted their guitar to make and the byproduct of that was their technique....

    I don't think Yngwie sweep picks in the same way that you showed. I think that was more Petrucci or Paul Gilbert's old method. If you check the Yngwie REH tabs on the video he did long ago, on the upward motion he uses some downstrokes. You'll see it in the close ups. I found it weird. But it makes sense since Yngwie doesn't sweep pick repetitively. He sort of sweep picks to connect his lines. Never just to showcase sweep picking, which is what most guys do. Thats why his style is unique. A lot of guys think sweep picking is Yngwie's thing but it aint. He even once said he didnt sweep picking that much. I think he uses a unique way of "sweep picking" , mostly 3 string and 5 string arpeggios with downstrokes in certain parts. It would be very difficult for him to teach something he does naturally and doesn't think about that much.

      yeh he has good economy skills ,ha but mike mentioned Loomis ,got to be kidding Jeff is a beast he started in Nevermore n some yrs back did cover of jason beckers - perpetual burn ..paul gilbert says he cant do sweeps like yngwie ,thts why he developed his string skipping well but he has 4 index fingers lol

      He does kinda the marty friedman thing where he plays them only in certain instances and never sine wave looking sweeps. Marty Friedman even denies calling it sweep picking

      You are right. Yngwie does not sweep pick.

      Metal players sweep pick because they can not play as fast as Yngwie.

    I've always felt that when many famous guitarists explain things, the explanation is so terrible that they're either complete idiots or just trying to be cryptic on purpose to make themselves seem like gods.

    That's really a Nice vidéo to upgrade sweep thanks Mike.
    O btw is There a way to know if we have actually the level to starting sweeping. I try somes sweep after à couple days I was able to move in it at 60bpm but it never sound as clean as the theacher who show it. Well I know its hard to tell for sure but I mean I guess I need a clean tapping before starting sweep or maybe there a riff or a song that can really help to build the skills set for sweep.
    Like for exemple I think master of puppet are perfect to practice downpicking. Or man in the box are perfect to practice vibrato.

    Mike, can you talk about the tumb mutting?

  • @fabriziosantin7420
    @fabriziosantin7420 2 года назад

    So you do inside picking when you change direction on the 3 stringe sweeps. Do you know what Ingwe does? Too lazy to check now...

    • @EL_DUDERIN0
      @EL_DUDERIN0 Год назад

      I'm not doubting mike's skills, and I don't listen to Yngwie much, but I *think* Jason Becker did outside picking on the 3-string arpeggios when changing directions in Altitudes. To me, that sound is more rhythmic since you would be changing directions on the start of the triplet instead of in the middle of a triplet like I think Mike's doing here. It may come down to just personal preference and a nice option to make the run sound different in different circumstances to be honest.
