I don't know if you are intending to hear the opinions of your white overseas fans but I do have a lot of thoughts about racism as it appears in different nations. Firstly I want to affirm and reiterate what you pointed out. I'm not trying to outdo what you said as what I'm about to say you said in way that is both more concise and more accessible. I do want to demonstrate that I understand it so that my later points will not be taken as in contradiction. -- I believe that "not all x" arguments primarily exist to deliberately derail conversations and imply that the prejudice comes from marginalized communities. Often if the term "white people" is used it either was never intended to describe all white people and to clarify that would be unnecessary. Example: "white people are putting raisins in potato salad." This was clearly never intended to be all encompassing but instead to highlight a curiosity that is primarily witnessed in that group. I have never known a white person who has done this as not only is that recipe not a thing within the nation I live in but potato salad is really unpopular too. Even so that does not change the validity of the statement "white people are putting raisins in potato salad." Even if it was phrased as "All white people" it would be fair to assume that the term "All" is an exaggeration for some intended effect. Sometimes "white people" does mean "all white people" either because it does in fact apply or at the very least is analogous to similar situations where it would be applicable. Example: "white people are conditioned to be preferential towards other white people." This statement does apply to all white people. Some white people may be less susceptible to this conditioning. Some white people may work to combat this conditioning. However, at the end of the day that conditioning is still happening and it doesn't go away just by knowing it exists. The conditioning is environmental rather than innate or developmental. It's hard not to get dirty when you live in a landfill. You can learn to reduce the rubbish you are putting out there but until we clean the existing dump up we are still gonna be dealing with the smell and grossness of it all. (For anyone missing my really on the nose point the rubbish is a metaphor for racism.) As a white person I'm just not going to cry about rightfully being identified as part of a system that benefits from and maintains white supremacy. It may not be willingly and I may be doing my best to object to it but ultimately simply by existing within a system like this in some way contributes to it. My hope is that I do what I can to work alongside others to enable change so that in the future this will not be true. So as expected my opinion is very much that saying white people is obviously sufficient in both of these cases. Another point worth mentioning is that Sunn is a black American. He is obviously going to speak from his own perspective and in general about his own experiences. That means often he will use "people" interchangeably with "people I am referring to". This is a function of the English language and indicative of nothing more. If I say "I'm meeting some people in town today." It would be weird to correct me and say "No you are meeting two Black Irish and One White English in town today." Americans are in fact people so calling white Americans white people is pretty normal and not an example of assuming that Americans represent all people. I always appreciate when people clarify the perspective, specifics and subjectivity of a statement but it is wrong to expect it. Sometimes it can be left to subtext and you can always ask for clarification. I have a feeling that very few people who were getting on at sunn about saying "white people" were politely asking "when you say white people are you primarily referring to white Americans?" It seems like it was pushed as an expectant order... Which is kinda a good demonstration of the racist root of the statement. The next I'll say is that the attitude of pointing to something particularly bad can negatively impact addressing of the general issue which in this case is a primary cause of the particularly bad thing. It's really frustrating when people act like prejudice and discrimination exist solely in terms of direct abuse. People being starved to death through marginalisation don't end up less dead than those murdered in public by direct acts of hate. I think fundamentally this is what the overseas white people think they are making a clever point of. I feel like they are saying "Your racism is obvious and more widely reported currently so our racism mustn't exist." This should be obviously wrong to them though so I don't know how exactly they are conceptualising it. -- So now that I'm done adding nothing to the conversation by clumsily saying the same thing that Sunn managed to say in 10 seconds I'll get to the point I wanted to say which I know others who are more relevant to this conversation have pointed out before. This is my answer to the question "is American the most racist?" (Which I know was probably somewhat rhetorical.) There is value to be had in discussing how racism appears differently in different places and even discussing the unique issue of American racism. As clearly outlined above this shouldn't be done to deny the racism of other nations. Certain impacts of racism may be reduced substantially in other nations. The UK police have an undeniable problem of systemic racism... But it rarely ends in death. Income inequality and healthcare inequality are issues in the UK... But nobody is going into debt from hospital bills because we have national healthcare and the quality of our Universal Credit/Benefits is much more robust than American welfare. Don't get me wrong it certainly needs to be better and we are a hugely racist country but certain problems with racism in the US are incredibly acute. The reason why this is important is not because people should focus only on the acute issue but because of an additional issue of US racism. The US political propaganda machine exports extremist political ideals that are frankly alien to other nations. This was demonstrated best during Trumpism's rose but it has been happening for decades and will continue for long to come. It is eerily similar the rise of fascism. Across Europe extremists were adopting MAGA attitudes in a really weird way where they described themselves as Trump supporters in spite of the fact that they aren't American. Talking about how bad Mexicans are even though there are so few Mexicans living in Europe. It was clear that they were drinking the cool aid and we don't actually have that over here. We generally drink squash instead. Ribena is a popular choice. US conservative think tanks and organisations have frequently funded so called "charities" across the world that push right wing views. When Fox news is working with British TERFs to promote transphobia and racism in both nations people should be paying attention. So my point is that I don't think it is important to decide who is the "most racist" but it can be important to look at American racism and how it is significantly impacting the face of racism in other nations. This is something I feel personally close to because Britain has historically and continues to also be a major exporter of racism. We also need to raise awareness of the racism that exists in other nations such as the fact that there are slurs used comparably to the N slur in many nations but are ignored because they lack the coverage that the N word got. This isn't to say media should cover the N word less. They should cover all forms of racism more. Especially if that racism is intricate such as the use of zoning to enable racial discrimination. I worry that both the attitude that views America as the most racist and the view that everywhere is equally racist can cause a problem. I worry people might get the idea that racism is somehow universal and a monolithic entity rather than an interconnected web of power structures that are never really independent but also not so straightforward to be the same. The most important point is screw the people who say "not all white people." End of poorly constructed essay unnecessarily put in the RUclips comments section.
Rose, that was fantastic and I hope Sunn sees it. From a Black European standpoint, just mine but lived, I think you encapsulated it brilliantly and fearfully honestly.
Irish person living in Scotland here. I think the way racism is expressed in different countries varies a lot. I've seen videos from the U.S. and the feeling seems to be that the racist is very shocked to experience any consequences for their actions. Racism is generally more covert in the UK and Ireland, I think. There will be videos released of people shouting racial slurs and that kind of thing is denounced by the majority. There's also police brutality and abuse of minors in police custody in the U.K. Then there's microaggressions on a daily basis. It would be a simple thing to wag my finger at the U.K. but in Ireland I've witnessed prejudiced people spouting rubbish in private when they think everyone in the room will agree. I've cut off contact with extended family because of it. Bigots are everywhere and they need to have their bigotry met with vocal and uncompromising resistance. Every single time.
Racism is mostly against the culture that's been shown by people who look like that culture. Muhammad in his prime today, would experience so little racism for his fame. While a street rat on drugs with the same melanin levels would face cruelty and comments about their skin. I don't believe in racism, to hate a color is to be the most ignorant and mentally crippled person upon this earth, to hate a culture, is to have been through an event with that culture that made you think that way. I openly hate the loud majority of the gang violence culture in America, regardless of skin, from skinheads, to N*, they are all hated by me. But the souls that are beautiful in that culture do not wish to be apart of it and it makes my heart hurt at night knowing they are humans suffering under such bad circumstances that have been systemically installed. Going home to racists, which yes, gang culture is the most racist culture I have personally met, and my family has skinheads and OG Nazis, is such a crippling thing to a child, a woman, a man. Their humanity is stripped and replaced with brutality and systemic abuse. If you are raised a certain way, with no reality check or realization that you can't do those things, you can't be that way, you will raise your kids that way and continue the cycle. These words that "hurt" people, should be desensitized and done away with as they become useless. When Marijuana was state-legalized it spiked, and then fell drastically. It became non-taboo, a normal thing. If you tell me I'm a Nazi, a Skinhead, a disgusting trash human, I'm going to tell you you're fucking stupid and I'll walk away. I have no time for stupid people, I have no time for things I do not like in my life. I can withstand a conversation without crying over a fucking word. Each and every one of you can too. If a word holds no power it will stop being said. If a word means nothing then that idiot is blowing smoke out of their mouth, ears, and ass. The uneducated who think it's simply a matter of skin, do your research on culture and their disputes. Decide for yourself what you truly support, don't let anyone control your heart, your head, or your body. I believe in each and every human being, everyone can change, everyone has that power. Weak minded people will prey on you, weak minded people will hurt you, weak minded people rape children and women. It is the weak mind that is our enemy, not the skin color of that sick person. Some minds cannot be fixed, and what I say will come across as a blanket statement but I do not mean 100%, down to the 0000000001, I mean a general majority, those that are immersed in the lifestyle, the activities, the people, the language, without outside education. The majority can denounce all they want, but the minority still exists and needs to be taken care of. Humans are a complex case, but the solutions are not as complex as you'd think. My goal is to create a society by shedding as much blood, sweat, and tears as it takes to give people expression, to give people life. I want to create things this world has never seen and to do that we must come together against the uneducated, the sick, the weak minded, the corrupt in any position. But the sheep will follow the wolf to their death if that's what it takes. No war, political or combat based, is without casualty. You have to make sacrifices to make progress, that is not taught today, if it were then we could make those sacrifices as a united people. I do not care where you came from, what you do, what your people do. You have unlimited potential when working together. Those with mindsets like mine will rule this world one day and leave the sick, who cannot pay attention and learn, behind, while I work to make my dream a reality I will raise as many hands as I can to promote better life for all of us.
You and I have different experiences of the UK my friend. In my part of England its escalated back to screaming profanities and spitting on people in public. It's getting real bad.
As a Black American who has traveled and lived abroad, in my experience, white Americans aren't "The Most" racist; they're jjust the most vocal and most demonstrative with their racism.
Indeed. That's one of the biggest reasons why the international community craps on Americans. Because we're very vocal with almost everything, including the subject of White Supremacy. Racist White Americans have always been proud about their racism, prejudice & bigotry. Whereas the international community, especially in Europe, wants to be hush-hush about it as if it's a big secret no one knows about. But their actions throughout out history have told us exactly how racist they are
I'm from the South, but I lived up North for a while. My experience has been that Southern people don't hide their racism. Northerners are just as racist, but they think not having a rebel flag in their front yard means they beat personal and institutional racism.... The town I lived in had one high school with fewer than 300 total students in all 4 grades combined... 3 people of color (students) from two families, two of whom were Indian/Hindu.
When you ask: - white Americans about black people - white Europeans about Roma people - white Australians about Aboriginal people - white English about any ethnic minority with a significant presence - white French about Arabs - any white tourists about the North African men who set up blanket stalls in tourist trap cities in southern and south Western Europe - any people group from the Balkans about any other people group from the Balkans, but also black people - white Canadians about First Nations people - old and/or rich white South Africans about black South Africans - old white Zimbabweans (probably would refer to themselves as Rhodesians) about black Zimbabweans, although the power dynamics are super different and peculiar to that particular location during decolonisation and frankly it's one of the only times and places on the planet where it is actually worth considering racism against white people White Americans might be the most openly racist against black people specifically, but the fight for white supremacy crown has some *very* stiff competition. As a non-American white guy, what we can probably do on the outside is shut the fuck up and appreciate that if Sunn is talking about American issues, he's referring to Americans, and if he's talking about the mechanisms of white supremacy in the abstract then we should examine more closely why we feel the need to immediately get defensive when talking about ending someone else's oppression
So sad to hear that. You can stand up against racism when it's one person. Even two. But when it's a population of a country. That's an uphill battle. One I would not want to fight. I would have left as well.
@@themom2250 And they're STILL doing it. 5 minutes on the news about how Megan didn't go to some funeral function with Harry. Then a bit about Harry and William, then all nonchalant "Kate also did not attend". Like, excuse me?!
Meghan is more complicated than race. I do think there's an element of that there and there's certainly a lack of wanting to understand from Brits perspective. I do think there's also a lack of acceptance from Meghan that you sacrifice freedom and expression as a royal, and you can't have the perks (paid by taxpayers) without giving back. Because its not often seen when entering the Royal Family, it became a big deal
I'm a retired AA female soldier that has traveled all over the world. Americans are just bolder and have no shame in their white supremacy, but Europeans and to my surprise Arabs and South Americans are quite racist as well.
I know right! They still talking mad shit about Meghan Markle but will swear up and down they are not racist. Like what has the woman really done but exist?
Your example of using Southerners as a scape goats for White Americans is totally spot on. It’s an excuse I’ve told myself before facing my own internalized racism. I really do think it’s the same for White people abroad.
I hope you get your internalized racism under control., that sounds like a real issue . One I can't say I understand but at least you're addressing it. Just my personal opinion but try just seeing all people as children of God , created in his divine image and all with purpose
I can only site anecdotal evidence as a white American but here goes 1) I have family in “the old country”(Poland) who have stopped talking to me because I married a POC 2) My wife and her family have experience racism in the US, a lot of it, but the only place her father was refused service was at a restaurant in Germany. 3) Any British person acting like no white folks in their country are racist should just look at how the public treated Meghan Markle. Or the entire country of India. Or basically half the world when they colonized it.
Cite* And yeah, Europeans do racism professionally lmao. Where do they think Americans get it from? The only reason they think otherwise is because our media focuses on it so much more than theirs
As a white Brit, I've heard this all too often from other white Brits when I try to talk to them about British racism. "This isn't America, we're not like that here". What a crock of shite.
Racism is just different in Britain than it is in America, I'm not saying we don't have it, just that is manifests in a very different way in day to day life
@@alexiaroberts1012 That's true. Unfortunately, those ways tend to be more insidious, and less widely acknowledged. It tends to be a very polite form of racism, which does not fit with our naive, limited definition of racism, which is essentially "being rude about someone's colour". This feeds our cultural sense of being "above all that", which can be traced all the way back to Somerset v Stewart, where slaves on English soil were 'granted' rights that they did not have anywhere else in the empire, and would not have for many years to come.
In our wonderful country classism supersedes racism in a systemic sense the poor are the most oppressed ,if we’re running the oppression olympics, and nationalism and white supremacy is a tool used by the powerful to harbour dissent within the working class the most racist brits are working class men not the elite whereas in America the spunky young colony was built on a system of subjugation of Africans as a free work force that admittedly was erected by the European monarchy’s who were handed carpe blanche by the Catholic Church so once again we get Christianity as the root of this problem same as sexism or religious discrimination
It's just different racism here. It's not as obvious or clear. It's more subtle. But it's still very much there. Stereotyping, prejudice ect. It's all still there. America is just more obviously racist. Like you KNOW someone's racist AF in the USA.
I think white Americans seem more racist because black Americans will confront them publicly and put them on display. Black people in other parts of the world seem more tolerant of the disrespect.
European reporters were saying, out loud, without dog whistles, that it was shocking to see Ukrainians as refugees and easy to empathize with them because they are white. The Dutch have an annual celebration that involves dressing in blackface, and get mad when you point it out to them. The Netherlands played a major part in the transatlantic slave trade. In France, women in hijab are harassed and sometimes legally forced to remove their hijab. In Canada, a white man can shoot an Indigenous man point blank execution style for the crime of stepping onto his land and be exonerated by a jury of his peers - Google Colton Boushie.
@@aworldtowin80 it is a very normal phenomenon unfortunately if you look at history pretty much every race has at least one account of extreme racism we even see it in animal not likening each other because of color scheme It’s a horrible thing that should never happen but don’t act like it’s new shit was happening long before am Americans existed and unfortunately it will probably all ways be happening somewhere
@@aworldtowin80 yeah sad to say it’s very normal and it’s been around for a very long time. And sadly it will probably be a very long time until it goes away.
And because history ANY country has the right to talk about racist because at some point they were racist or even enslave white people or other people That is history
As a white southerner who has lived equally above and below the “Mason-Dixon Line.” Vigilance, humility and listening are key to being anti-racist in a meaningful way. I acknowledge my ability to be wrong, and my desire to know better. IMO, listening, and less defending helps others feel heard and seen. All love 💗
I will never forget a German lecturing me about American racism, then immediately turning to cuss out a Turkish dude for playing “their music” too loud
Look for the clip of Italian soccer fans (the whole stadium) chanting some heinous shit at a soccer match. And if you want an instant fight call a Greek a turk.
All I know is I seen a video of an Asian girl in Germany tryna film or stream herself on her phone and men kept coming up to her and greeting her and then getting in her camera and doing that thing where you pull at the outter corners of your eyes to make them squinty. And like only ONE dude DIDN'T do that thing, instead coming up to her and having a short, genuine conversation with her, waving at her audience and then leaving. At one point she started berating a couple of these dudes like, "I love Germany why are you being so rude Germany isn't like this you are showing a bad side of Germany!" And they seemed to think there was absolutely nothing wrong or racist with what they were doin. Except I think one or two of them might have been ashamed after she lectured them, idk. Seems to me like a lot of European countries think that since they didn't participate in chattel slavery they are not racist. Completely ignoring all the other ways nearly all of them took advantage of and oppressed non-white people around the globe. Shout out though to all the oppressed minority groups in Europe that also have white skin, they just be born in the wrong region and follow the wrong culture. That shit's messed up too, like damn
Oh yeah Germany can be bad in what people perceive as ok. I've seen full on blackface and leopard loincloth in a street fair before. Was crazy. Someone genuinely thought to go out in public like that. Less than 1% of the population is black in Germany. I remember watching an interview about the experiences of black Germans where one girl was met by some school kids who had never even seen a photo of a black person before. One kid tried to wipe her clean.
As a Southeast Asian who has been to different countries, I can attest that white Europeans are no better than Americans. Racist Americans are just louder, but that can be said in general.
@@arplee4823 that logic is the issue. I certainly didn't colonise any countries, nor did my ancestors. My country is "Caucasian" prodominately but we were also colonised.
So true. I've heard so many Europeans vocally and proudly denounce racism, but seriously say that Romani people should be dead or in camps. Their argument is always "no, but the difference is that Romani people really are that bad, it's not just a stereotype!" Yeah, that's what American racists say about black people too 🙄
As a Brit, I always hear 'American racism' being used to make ourselves feel better. Like "Yeah our cops might be racist, but not that racist!". But really we're just better at hiding it tbh 😒
I am half black, I identify as African American in the USA I had Europeans call me a mutt or an inbred as an insult know one in the USA EVER called me that. And that’s just 1 example of how racist Europeans can be, there are many story’s of African Americans traveling to Europe and white Europeans treating them worse than white Americans.
I had a conversation with an Irish man once who pointed out that in the US we at least talk about racism which is more than he can say for his own country, which also has problems with racism but nobody acknowledges it.
Dutch white person here. We’re still working on convincing people that painting yourself black, wearing lipstick and a wig and putting on fake golden earrings the size of an apple, all the whole wearing a funny outfit, is not a good kids holiday. America may be loudly racist, but people across the world of every culture got a long looooong way to go. And I can’t claim innocence, I took my time to learn, was well in my teens before I knew what side I needed to be on and stopped participating in “black Pete”. Bonus points, the n word is still used commonly for black people in large parts of Europe, being deemed the “appropriate term” despite black Europeans asking for change. Bonus bonus points, even if not to black people, a lot of European westerners are racist to some group of people. My Turkish friends, I am sorry for what the Dutch do to you. And while I’m at it shouting out European problems, let me say something more global. Not all white people, but especially white people who cry not them and clear their own name before offering sympathy. If their reputation is their priority, they’re no ally, and this counts for every “not all x” argument out there.
I agree tacitly with your point regarding that some white people like to 'save face' before offering sympathy. But I've also attended a class in school surround topics like these and while I was a supporter of the principals in the class; it nevertheless became very tiresome to engage so regularly with the conversations of 'white people this and that' or 'men this and that.' Again I agreed with the principal of the class and what they were trying to do but it mostly devolved into the white men of the class being literally berated for having an opinion on anything. So the lot of us just sat there and took it. By the time we regurgitated what was expect to pass the test the lot of us gave up on the whole conversation for YEARS. Im sure it also turned people off of becoming 'allies' because at the end of the day surrounding yourself with that kind of toxic thought process isnt healthy. If you lump all people of a particular group together and cast derision and qualities to the lot you cant blame them for getting tired and choosing not to listen.
@@AlkalineGamingHD I get what you are saying. Now as a Black American woman..... @@jazzip There is no reason unknown. WE know why, but there is a place we can go as AA. Most of us were "distributed" to other parts of the south and then after slavery (as if it ever really ended) alot of us migrated up north and out west, for that so called "manifest destiny" that was NEVER meant for us in this country. I say this knowing, that if we were to actually accomplish this (and it is very possible, especially now) the very people who complain about our existence and micro/macro aggressions per their behavior and attitude will come knocking the doors down to be included. This feels like the spiderman meme where they point at one another. There will always be people blaming others instead of dealing with their own house. We all have things we need to work on even as individuals. Being in denial doesn't help anyone.
Exactly! Making someone an escape goat is just a desperate or ignorant attempt at covering up your own country's faults. Every country in the world has racism, and everyone has experienced racism at least once in their life. We can all do better by thinking about what we say, how we say, and why we say the things we do. Realizing it's a wrong thing to say doesn't mean you're a bad person if you realize it, feel bad, and change your mindset. Realizing mistakes doesn't make you less than if you fix them, it will if you stubbornly stick to your mistakes and yell "ITS NOT ME ITS EVERYONE ELSE WHOS WRONG"
@John Bryer And who said racism wasn't wrong? no one ever said that, even racist people do not say that. Saying all white people is only adding to the problem though, if you have been suppressed because of your race you shouldn't try to suppress another race to make yourself feel better as it only adds to the problem yet again.
Who is in denial? Just because some group of white people was involved in the slave trade does that mean all white people should be punished. I got a better question some of our black people sold us to Europeans so does that mean we suppose to blame all black people who was in Africa for selling us to the white European. Jesus said it like this the one who handed Him over to the Pharisees and the Romans have the greater sin, just maybe God might view this as that. Those who handed over our ancestors to the white slave traders have the greater sin?
Agree with that. Btw, is makaak still a slur to refer to black people in België nowadays? Dutch myself, lots of shamefull events in our history too. Too bad racism is still a thing in 2022.

As a brit, the idea that someone from Britain would try and suggest another nation was more racist is utterly ridiculous, given how racist Britain is, and Australians, they can shut up about not being as racist as other nations, given how they treat their native ppl, even to this day.
I at least know that people in Europe talk differently about race than in the US, depending on the country, and racism doesn’t necessarily “look” the same (the way people act on it).
i know america has alot more racist terms and slurs than alot of other places, im from the uk and i had never even heard of these terms until i started using the internet and watched white americans do it themselves
People in Europe are the first ones to participate in racism starting with your classism and monarchies and spreading it via colonialism. And it’s the same rhetoric as the rest of the world too
This. I've seen so many people say exactly this. Black Americans actually just get to be "American" abroad but have heard locals talk negatively about the black people in their countries. It exists everywhere but how it looks is another story
As a black German teacher, I can assure you 100% that not only white Germans, but generally white Europeans grow up with racist knowledge, discourses, habits, ways of thinking and feeling.....not that everyone would have wished for that. Many racist answers or questions are literally the same from Germany to Poland to the US. Other racist thoughts or actions simply wear different clothes in different nations, but all have the same sources and results. And the mixture is also interesting: in the USA you find racist actions or words that you hardly find in European countries...and vice versa. So we can assume that there is a good old racial balance among white people worldwide.
As a white American black Americans are the most racist people I’ve ever met. They even hate each other for being too dark or too light skin but they claim it’s everyone else nah it’s them

Most of all, I enjoy reading the varied comments to your thought provoking comments & learning from them, especially those from outside my little NE US realm. This was an argument I made at my American school about how America teaches history as an “us vs. them” mentality. It was “US vs. Britain,” it was “US vs. Vietnam,” even when we fought ourselves it was “US vs. the South.” The south was us. Why can’t all of us, every individual, just own up to the fact that we were all the “bad guys” at least once.
The fact that your number one contribution around the world is to steal, kill, destroy--repeat, it has to be disheartening. They just love and except themselves for who they are--thats the one thing I appreciated about trump #MaskOff Now they wanna go back to pretending to be Hue-man. It doesnt work like that--no backsies, we see you👀
The truth that black Americans are obsessed with race and everyone else I. The world isn’t totally obsessed with race they actually get over history because they know so much more of it but let’s hear from the average American with a third grade world history education.
Idk if we’re the “most” racist or not, that seems difficult to quantify, but I’ve definitely heard people from other places talking about the racism they experience there. It’s not like white supremacy is solely an American thing. It stayed everywhere it went, and colonialism was pretty thoroughly global. I never made that connection of “America is to the world as the south is to America” so thank you for that!
As a white American from South American stock I can say with absolute certainty that racism is presenting loud and clear in Latin America. To hear my sweet little grandma just come out and say some ish about indigenous populations in her country like she was commenting on the state of her kitchen sink is never not jarring. My gramps is even worse about it. To answer the actual question: white people are racist everywhere, it's just the influence of America on global pop culture that makes it easier for these other countries to foist it on us, because humanity as a whole tends to abhor accountability.
Thank you for stating what most of us already know. I've traveled internationally for 30+ years, as a Descendant/Indigenous woman, I received the worst treatment in Europe (Italy, Belgium) the customer service was HORRIBLE to me and other Patrons that looked like me. I had to learn very quickly, only go where you see others that look like me, standing in line.
"humanity as a whole tends to abhor accountability" is a point of tried to make In the past with way worse wording, imma quote you next time that's well said.
People ask me all the time if as the white husband of a black woman am still racist in any way and my answer to that is "every single time I do or say something racist, until I repair it, yes! I try my best not to be "a racist" but I am fully capable of doing things that are racist; my wife's race does not innoculate me in any way, only my own attention to my feelings, words and actions do that. There are matters about which I lack the cultural experience to make an educated comment. There are many times I have had to remind myself that i did not grow up here, so I should learn instead of comment.
As a white American, it REALLY bothers me seeing white Europeans talk about U.S. racism as if their country is a progressive, enlightened utopia that's evolved beyond racism, unlike the dim-witted yokel Americans. I'm well aware the U.S. is a deeply racist place, but I'm eager to unlearn the indoctrination & biases I've internalized, I wanna do my best to be a good ally. Meanwhile, I once watched a white Belgian call a black friend a "colonizer" (???) simply because he's American. When I told him it was crazy for a white Belgian to call a black man that due to Belgium's colonization of the Congo, he lost his mind. He not only angrily accused us of lying about Belgian atrocities, but also refused to believe Belgium had EVER colonized the Congo. By the end, he was finally willing to acknowledge Belgium had indeed colonized the Congo, but said the Congolese should just be grateful the Belgian State took over ownership from the crown & didn't brutalize them as much as King Leopold. So, so maddening. It's so common. "Non-racist" white Australians, Brits, French, Dutch, you name it, I've seen them try it and then inevitably freak out when you point out modern/historical instances of racism. Like, yeah, I may live in the #1 White Supremacist Dystopia in the World, but at least I'm trying to confront the issue head on instead of denying its existence and believing I'm noble for doing so.
I saw a whole Twitter thread about this recently(ish) where it was just POC after POC after POC recounting their absolutely revolting experiences of racism throughout Europe (maybe other places too, but definitely Europe). Some seemed to be saying that even though racism is more systemic and entrenched in the US, it is, or tends to be, more open and in your face in many parts of Europe.
So, I'm Danish and white and grew up in a mostly white area - but my best friend through kindergarten is black and comes from Uganda. I've ALWAYS grown up with the belief that Denmark doesn't have a racism issue, despite my literal best friend being called the N-word when she was 6 or 7 years old. Danes like to pretend like racism is something we haven't had in ages, and like oh well, we don't mind black people, so we're fine. But Danes have also come up with a "concept" that's "hygge-racisme". Hygge is usually a word for cozy and relaxing and fun. And it's now being paired with... yep, racism. The amount of people who will say the most racist things I've heard in a LONG time, will also turn around and say oh well, I don't think less of them, the joke is just funny. We're nothing like the americans, you know, we don't burn people. It's AWFUL, and I hate that it took me almost 20 years to realize there was a problem, because I was taught that racism isn't something that exists in Scandinavia anymore. And don't even get me started on the racism towards middle-eastern people - it is DISGUSTING. And again, every single comment you see on Facebook articles and so on, when called out on their racism, will say oh, it's a joke, we're not like the americans. There's so much focus on how bad it is in America (which is good, cause it does seem to be *worse* in the states), but that doesn't make racism disappear everywhere else.
@@TheEliKaulitz It's just odd you and every european seem to forget about that when discussing racism. When your current and successful economy is at least partially built from the profits of that period. "It happened so long ago" and what reparations have been paid since then?
I'm a white Australian and racism is so deeply entrenched in our culture 60% of our population voted against native Australians being recognised in our constitution abd having an advisory voice to parliament!
White American here. So I used to work as a camp counselor. And my boss was a British Philiapino, I think it’s been a few years, but he told me some stories of growing up in England that wouldn’t have sounded out of place in the Deep South. So at the very least England’s got some issues to work through it seems like. Just figured I’d share that sorry.
Such an interesting idea, as it may very well be white Americans, but it's also so easy to throw shade at America already cause of its reputation. I loved how you brought up how the south is a scapegoat for other white supremacist, never something I had thought of before. Thanks for the new perspective.
I'm a black man from Trinidad. White Trinidadians are a small minority here. They live in their own communities and socialize in their own groups. The first time I hung out with them I got it. And my white American friend/colleague who took me to the party did not back me up. It's global!
As someone who’s Puerto Rican but appears white, I can say that white people in general are racist. They have their own biases that have been ingrained into society and their brains since they were kids. Regardless of if it’s white Americans, white Europeans, white Australians, and white Canadians. It’s all bad. All white people from different countries are basically the same. Some are just more vocal about us. Of course I’m not saying all white props are racist, but again everyone has minor things that are taught that point to subtle racism.
I'm not saying we shouldn't be held accountable, but for generations upon generations we've been spoon fed this superiority complex. It's quite unfortunate for literally everyone, but many of us don't realize that we're racist. It's not that we're unwilling to change, we just don't know that what we're doing is wrong because that's the way we were taught. Racism is very real and very strong with many of us as well, so I get why calling us out isn't always the best of ideas too. I'd like to formally apologize for the way it is, but I also realize my apology falls flat as those that are the worst of us won't change. Can I ask you a genuine question? What are some things those of us that want to be the change CAN do that you're not seeing us do? Because I do want to be the change. I just don't know how. Other than changing my own behaviors when I'm made to realize I'm in the wrong, obviously.
@@Alkelly-hh6rv it's not a country.... "White" Puerto Ricans are usually of Spaniard or Italian descent.... With the colonizers who raped and murdered our people. Native Puerto Ricans are not white.
No everyone is NOT taught "minor" things that point to subtle racism! I feel like people don't understand what real racism and discrimination is that's why everyone is so fucking sensitive about every little fucking thing someone's says. How about we mind our business a little more and just be kind to the next person... lol yeah right!
I had a friend (of the more melanin type) that went to korean for a while, he told me that he experienced more hate towards himself in the months he was there than he ever experienced his life in America.
I'd say yes but only the grandparents and most boomers. Like legit they can be racist and not know it. But the younger generations who grew up along side multiculturalism, we've definitely come a long way. And I'm pretty proud of how accepting aussies are to others nationalities. Though there'll always be a few that still be racist.
@@kelliecanscan3364 I think our saving grace (to use the term ironically) has been we've separated from the church- metaphorically and literally. Being so far away from heavy and overt religious persusion has allowed us to move forward that little bit further.
@@kelliecanscan3364 yeah but we had the White Australia policy in place from 1901-1966. It had a more fancy name, but ensured only white people could immigrate. Also Aborigines were classed as animals up until the 1960's, not counted as humans in the Census. Rascism is part of human history, as slavery and plunder of other tribes, groups, nations ranged within all humanity.
@@Stopthisrightnow560 Yeah, but... people are pushing really hard to make it a thing. There are politicians that ARE trying to make Australia a christo-fascist nation. Plus, it's not like religious minorities are treated well. I can attest to that as a celtic pagan 😒 and you'd think considering most convicts were Irishmen wouldn't be so hostile to someone that worships old Irish gods, but they are (and I mean... Irish Catholicism is a whole trip anyways 💀)
(I am a white Australian) I think that some of this confusion comes from the way racism historically works differently in different cultures. For example, some of indigenous population of my country use the descriptor "Black" for anyone of indigenous origin, even if the person would be considered white passing or have predominantly white heratige. This is because of a historical movement called "breed out the black", where indigenous children where taken from their families and raised in white environments and basically forced to marry/have children with white people. I have seen indigenous Australian creators critisised by black americans because they dont understand this history, so what they see is a white person "identifying" as black. Idk this was the most clear example I could think of where assuming that racism all works the same across the world can harm marginalised racial communities. I would be more than open for corrections/discussions, especially if youre indigenous australian you'd definitely have a more nuanced take than I have.
This is a really good point. I watched an Australian tv show recently where the two main actors were indigenous and they were using that descriptor and I wondered why so I googled it and found that history out. I do think part of it is Americans and non Americans not understanding that race and racism works differently in different countries so racism will look. Different everywhere but doesn’t mean that racism doesn’t exist
Coming back to this as a random short....i cant help but think some people are willing to go "told you we the best!" and not understand that this particular thing isn't really a good one to be proud of.
Eh, white people have been fighting other white people for millennia due to Europe being a resource divided area. This shouldn’t take long though if we’re talking most racist white country the moneys on Turkey since the Muslim African slave trade makes the trans Atlantic one look like a 5 star vacation. Most racist in recent times though I’d say goes to Zimbabwe since they literally let it destroy their economy
From South Africa here. I have lived in the states, and there's one thing our white folk have in common with yours, especially Southerner's. Usually, if they are racist, THEY WILL MAKE IT KNOWN. This, ironically, makes them easier to deal with. In apartheid, my mom literally taught me to "prefer" the Afrikaans racist to the English (Brit descendant) because you just never know. There is less fakeness and you know where you stand. European racists are wierd. You never know, and sometimes THEY are even oblivious to it. Leave Billy-Bob and Tammy alone. I can handle Billy-Bob. Dimitri von Warvandaan le Quel confuses me
As a White American, I just want to say how much I appreciate the tone of this video and most of the comments on it. It could be so easy for a conversation like this to descend into vitriol and name-calling, but you set it up as an honest inquiry seeking answers to genuine questions, and as far as I can see, your commenters have followed your lead. My hat's off to everyone.
I'm German (white and as German as beer, the only non Germanic people in my ancestry so far are from former German areas that were re-distributed after WW1 and WW2). So despite most of my family not having been members of the Nazi party and all post war generations miraculously being very tolerant.. I'm still profiting from antisemitism and racism back then because my family has opportunities provided to them by eliminating competition for that opportunity. So while maybe not actively profiteering, my family at least passively reaped the benefits the Nazis sowed. And by that I can't exclude myself from being called someone benefiting from a racist system that still persists. I can only say that I personally do my best to be anti racist (and anti fascist). But I can also with certainty say "that's not all Germans" and not even a majority. I would say "most white Germans aren't professed racists" or "most white Germans aren't Nazis". But the same also is true for "most white Germans aren't anti racist or anti fascist". So those "not all white people" is just the international dog whistle for "all lives matter"
Grew up in segregated Alabama and even at sixty five years old, I have no problem saying that racists don't self police their prejudice. Happen to be Cherokee.. Learned to be strong from my brothers and sisters of chocolate hues. God bless you all
I was shocked when I first met Australians and Kiwis. Their blacks are indigenous. And whoa, as a black woman from the south I was still shocked at the things they said. Openly. To a black woman. 🤦🏿♀️
I'm surprised about the Kiwis but less so about us Australians. It has improved over time however we still have a long way to go. I'm sorry you experienced that.
yeah i know a few old people that still call black people neegros in australia i mean i don't think their trying to be offensive it's just they haven't updated their terminology in 60 years
My dad ( white) grew up outside of Boston MA in the 50s and 60s. During the 60s era of the Civil Rights movement he told me he remembered reading local news articles praising some towns for not having segregated busses or a " race problem". He did not understand why they were so happy with themselves because he rarely saw black and brown people in those communities at the time. Non-whites were redlined out of those areas for decades. Point is..yes you can have a racism problem despite not thinking you do.
I visited Boston. I was so hurt and disappointed that people of Color have been pushed into the Suburbs for lack of affordability in the city. Boston seems intentional about keeping Boston predominately white.
My grandpa (from Mississippi) went on a vacation with his wife at the time. He went to where his grandparents came from, Norway. His wife was Indian. My poor grandpa was kicked out of the hotel he booked and had to take a BOAT to a bigger city for another hotel. They didn't "want that kind of person" in their fancy hotel. They treated him great until they saw his wife. I straight up didn't believe some of the things he said they did... but now I'm older I've started to accept it.
I'm from Mississippi. People find it hard to believe that Mississippi folks can act better than people from my other places. I live in Georgia now. I experienced more racism in Georgia than I ever did in Mississippi.
To my fellow Australians who are dobbing us in for being racist - good on you! Sadly I suspect those of us watching this are somewhat more enlightened than many of our countrymen who would deny the racism. Some is overt but I think far more is systemic. I read that it isn't enough to be non-racist, we have to be anti-racist...
I'm a Black American woman. They're all equally racist but display it very differently. I've traveled extensively. Australians are wildly racist. Especially if you're somewhere nice like Mosman (The Beverly Hills Of Sydney). I honestly never need to revisit Australia. Or Belgium. Horrible experience. Never again. The one place i felt totally fine in was Scotland. Everyone was lovely & was treated beautifully... also in France once they heard i had an American accent & wasn't African. I do know that Africans, particularly Nigerians & people from Senegal get treated like shit in Europe & the UK. I have several friends that live in the UK as Black brits & African migrants & are treated like crap. They're all racist. It's just served with tea & crumpets, croissants & expresso or coffee & donuts😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I am white male from the south in the US. I saw the worst racism in western and Northern states. This was when I drove commercial trucks. It's more backhanded and insidious but it's there.
My grandfather was born in 1915 in the deep south of the States and would tell me that all the time. That the Eastern and Northern states was just as racist than the South. He was thinking about moving he and his family there once but a visit there made him change his mind. I didn't believe him until I met some friends from up North in 2002 and they confirmed it.
As an Australian that grew up in one of the more conservative areas, I can say it's not just an American issue. It's incredibly casual and widespread. In my barely educated opinion the reason White Americans get dumped on is because it's so easy to see. The American voices are some of the loudest if not necessarily the most numerous.
As a white person from the south eastern US, I can confirm that racism is rampant down here. I would hope this is the worst there is. I work in healthcare and one of my clinics is in Crichton, AL. It is situated in the middle of a largely black neighborhood. The way I see their patient population treated and talked about across our organization makes me sick. The women that work there though, they never cease to amaze me with their hospitality and kindness in spite of being well aware of how they are perceived by executives and decision makers. Those women have become my family. I am honored to work alongside them and blessed to be in such a tight community.
Sir, I absolutely LOVE that - unlike so many.. others 👀 - you don’t try to “blacksplain”, you ask the question.. and allow the experts to answer. Simple. Can’t wait to read the excu-, I mean the defl-, I mean the explanations.. 🤭
And wow are there a lot of excus... explanations for why some particuoar brand of euro racism is ok. I cant tell you how many times ive had to explain to someone that being racist against Romani isnt somehow excusable just because they had a bad run in or experience. "But they love living in trash, we tried to civilize them but they dont want it" its identical to the hateful anti homeless rhetoric and less out-in-the-open racism against black ppl today in the us. Just so unnecessary, all you need to do is just be open to change and growth.

Black European here! I personally haven't had a terrible experience with racism except when the company I worked for used me for my talent and refused to modify my contract, yet gave every other people who where not black but with less talent and dedication as me a better contract. Well I realised I was better off leaving the company. Where I went to is one of the whitest industry and I have only met wonderful people who appreciate my contribution. But I can't speak for others who have a different story.
Idk about you guys but I went to Germany for like 6 months and went with my Hispanic friend and in the 6 months I was in Germany I saw more racism that my whole 22 years in the US. Like too the point where some Germans were spitting at my friend.
As a mixed-up 'white American' My go to is specifying 'White Trash' We're poor, struggling, have little identity and culture left, and little to no class or culture. My relatives mostly came over as harassed refugees, who only had their small poor communities to survive by and that community is what saved them while being harassed by most of society. I have native american in my blood and the atrocities are ongoing against them. I have black cousins and mixed cousins who are living in hellscapes of poverty and generations of drug abuse and family issues. As a white trash american, with many mixed races, I'll never classify myself as someone rich enough to keep generations of pedigree, wealth and societal marginalization, to justify all the ways they separate and harm our poor communities and good people who work hard for pennies to get by. The truth is we don't care about money. People are out here struggling for love, support, understanding and community. Keep that up and stand together to make a difference. They can't stop us from being better than their money and entitlement. Thank you Sunn for bringing your light and soul to communities and helping everyone communicate better and be more informed. You're truly a blessing! ❤
hi, french white person here! racism here is very much real and a problem but america is a lot more VISIBLY racist. theyre not the "most racist" theyre just the "most visibly racist". take my opinion with a grain of salt, i am extremely sheltered and dont go out much, + am in a white town, but thats the sentiment i heard from friends
@@thornsandrosess its been decades since hijabs/signs of religion have been banned from schools and stuff like that, which i do not support! hijabs should be allowed everywhere, im not aware of a new policy being passed but i havent paid attention to french politics in a bit. the reason signs of religion have been banned is so people arent berated for their religion but it immensely backfired as hijabis have been told they cant get their degrees and stuff like that if they come get said degree with their hijabs on, its horrible but racists say it's ok bc they can't wear a cross like that's the same thing?? its very weird
White person here, but I've watched a lot of black content creators and what I've heard about places like England is they're not as overtly racist, it's there, just not as loud and proud... though Trump seems to have emboldened them as well. I had a French friend say and I quote "we treat our Mexicans nicer than the French treat the Muslim people, they just throw them into ghettos"... and when Brexit occurred there were a lot of Eastern European people (Polish being a large part of that population) that were being told to go back to their country. Not exactly racism, but it is othering of other countries. But, I am on the outside looking in on those situations.

I appreciate you asking that question. As a white person that has lived in the states my whole life I am not gonna comment I just want to hear the result. I think more people should listen than talk in theses situations
I think more white Americans need to get the balls to point out that not only are the majority of us NOT racist we are not allowed to speak of our experiences of dealing with racism towards us because it doesn’t fit the leftist narrative. Want to find a racist white person in America? Look towards the woke leftists who are convincing the black community that shouldn’t have to read , write, or do simple arithmetic but should still be able to graduate high school. Or convincing them they are so downtrodden because of their own decisions to take government handouts and kill each other in the streets for drugs or anything of monetary value rather than having some restraint, focusing on how to move up and out of their situation and have a better life. Victim mentality and it’s rewards are easy but it’s rots the soul. It’s hard work and determination to not be a statistic and do what is best for you and your legal, honorable future that will create a life worth having. Unfortunately so many black Americans (not black immigrants mind you. They understand that work and sacrifice get you out of the ghetto) would rather point fingers at the white people and blame slavery and Jim Crowe. I call bullsh!t. They were well on their way to making something of themselves but along came Lyndon B. Johnson and his welfare state. Destroyed the nuclear family. Rewarded mothers for having no man of the house. Gave them enough to survive but never enough to be content while leaving them with no avenues available to move up and out without resorting to crime thus causing the imprisonment of so many of the absent fathers. The beast continues to feed itself so they no longer require the white liberal to convince them, they will continue to convince themselves while they fall further and further down the rabbit hole and it becomes a wider and wider net everyday. So many sit there believing that democrats want what’s best for them without understanding democrats were the KKK, democrats are Planned Parenthood that is guilty of a genocide that rivals all socialist regimes put together. They will do this all because they are given easy outs and excuses that is dragging all of society with them. In the end they will vote for the rich white democrats that care nothing for them but because it allows them to get the college admissions and the jobs because of their color and not their merit they will ignore how pathetic all our lives have become because of their ignorance.
I was gonna say this. I've heard so many different people from Europe say bad things about Romany people. I've also heard a lot of times Romany people will have to pretend they're not Roma in order to be able to do things like get a job or rent a house.

Even though all the experiences i had with Roma people so far were negative (camping in public parks, leaving their trash all over, washing their clothes in drinking fountain, stealing and threatening ppl there) obviously i know not all of them are like that, and there's enough germans who do the same stuff so like?? If someone i meet is roma i obviously won't judge them for where they're from. Youre so right, though, my mom is really open minded (like the stuff that should be normal, like not being racist/homophobic/transphobic, she's also pro choice, atheist etc. You get what i mean.) but suddenly Roma people are the exception...? I mean she does work in parks and stuff so she has more interactions with roma ppl than me, but in the grand scheme probably theres not more bad roma ppl than bad germans etc... Although I'm getting her to acknowledge that not all of them are bad, so...? thats progress ig?
There is a lot of problems in roma culture and they are given a LOT of help where I'm from when they immigrate to my country that begins a cycle of jealousy from the native people of my country because they feel neglected

I believe that "not all x" arguments primarily exist to deliberately derail conversations and imply that the prejudice comes from marginalized communities. Often if the term "white people" is used it either was never intended to describe all white people and to clarify that would be unnecessary.
Example: "white people are putting raisins in potato salad."
This was clearly never intended to be all encompassing but instead to highlight a curiosity that is primarily witnessed in that group.
(For anyone missing my really on the nose point the rubbish is a metaphor for racism.)
As a white person I'm just not going to cry about rightfully being identified as part of a system that benefits from and maintains white supremacy.
--
So now that I'm done adding nothing to the conversation by clumsily saying the same thing that Sunn managed to say in 10 seconds I'll get to the point I wanted to say which I know others who are more relevant to this conversation have pointed out before. This is my answer to the question "is American the most racist?" (Which I know was probably somewhat rhetorical.)
There is value to be had in discussing how racism appears differently in different places and even discussing the unique issue of American racism.
The most important point is screw the people who say "not all white people."

🎯EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

New, White South Africans are in competition with them.
I live in Canada. I can confirm this and it’s a topic spoken about here. Subtle r@c!sm as they call it. More micro aggressions and gaslighting type.
When you ask:
- white Americans about black people
- white Europeans about Roma people
- white Australians about Aboriginal people
- white English about any ethnic minority with a significant presence
- white French about Arabs
- any white tourists about the North African men who set up blanket stalls in tourist trap cities in southern and south Western Europe
- any people group from the Balkans about any other people group from the Balkans, but also black people
- white Canadians about First Nations people
- old and/or rich white South Africans about black South Africans
- old white Zimbabweans (probably would refer to themselves as Rhodesians) about black Zimbabweans, although the power dynamics are super different and peculiar to that particular location during decolonisation and frankly it's one of the only times and places on the planet where it is actually worth considering racism against white people
White Americans might be the most openly racist against black people specifically, but the fight for white supremacy crown has some *very* stiff competition.

But I've also attended a class in school surround topics like these and while I was a supporter of the principals in the class; it nevertheless became very tiresome to engage so regularly with the conversations of 'white people this and that' or 'men this and that.'
Again I agreed with the principal of the class and what they were trying to do but it mostly devolved into the white men of the class being literally berated for having an opinion on anything.

Yea but White America was solely mad mad about The Little Mermaid and at John Boyega for saying he only like dark skin women.

Doesn't Denmark have a history if violent colonialism and slavery?

@@genevieve.w so true! it’s so horrific how they have to hide/be ashamed of their culture. like they have such an amazing impact on the culture/music/etc of so many countries! it just seems that people always looking for a scapegoat :(
Even though all the experiences i had with Roma people so far were negative (camping in public parks, leaving their trash all over, washing their clothes in drinking fountain, stealing and threatening ppl there) obviously i know not all of them are like that, and there's enough germans who do the same stuff so like??
I love your intelligent use of idioms, analogies, metaphors, and correlations!
