My mama would sing 'Summertime' to me, when I was an infant in the late 50's. It is one of my earliest memories. I have chosen this version as a piece of music to be played at my funeral, which my family and I are currently planning - it seems that minor problems with my gallbladder have turned out to be advanced liver cancer. I do not know about how much time I have, but I do know that only love has meaning. Peace. Ben.
+Eric Tyra , might you be mistaken as to who dubbed the voice? I found this (not that everything on the internet is correct). "The film's renditions of "Summertime" by Loulie Jean Norman (dubbing Diahann Carroll) and Adele Addison (dubbing Dorothy Dandridge) have placed at #52 in the AFI's (American Film Institute) list of the 100 Best Movie Songs of All Time."
I had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Blackwell sing at a private dinner party and had the joy of sitting next to her during dinner. Her personality is as beautiful as her voice.
Ignore the 590 people who decided not to like this, they are clueless. This soprano is a dream, and it is actually suppose to be sung like this she is rocking a baby to sleep not screaming like so many other sopranos do with this aria. You have no clue how much control it takes to sing with such resonance, and pianissimo. Then she starts bringing more volume later is the piece, it's called musical phrasing and acting, she was brilliant.
Piss off with your snobbery. People are allowed to like whatever they like. This might be how it's meant to be but many people prefer the less operatic versions of the song particularly as the character is black and opera is not a sound associated with black culture or a character of this time period. I have every clue what it takes to sing like this having sung opera and trained in opera singing at stage school, that doesn't mean I have to like it.
I agree! I don’t know how anyone could say anything negative about this performance. This is exactly how this song should be sung, stylistically and technically. I listened to several other recordings before finding this one, and none of them captured the mood that I was looking for and this is absolutely perfect. Exactly how I hear this song in my head.
I am a soprano, capable of this range, but could never come close to this perfection. This is one of the most beautiful arias ever written, sung by one of the most beautiful voices. Delicate. Never tire of listening to this.
Gershwin's Porgy and Bess is every bit as valid an opera as anything Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Wagner, Verdi, or Puccini wrote. It's music is lush, it's emotions powerful, and it's drama grandly operatic. The San Francisco Opera production is on DVD and it's a powerful and vaulting experience. It was included in our opera season in Chicago and everyone flocked to see it. Twelve grand performances! Don't let anyone kid you. This is a full grand opera, and it deserves the best production and singers possible. And what a way to see how many truly outstanding artists of color we have singing here in the U.S. All of these singers sing Italian and French and German as well. This is just another opera in their vast repertoires. "Porgy and Bess", in the words of Stephen Sondheim, is "a musical gift from heaven".
I agree with your comments, i fell that gershwing has something to say, in his soul , in his own body , in his family' s story. that' s why the result is so expressive, intense, but never vulgar. It' s not so usual in opera, or any way of music, much others stories are often ridiculous and these music ' are made for a typical society, not especialy for humanity. Gershwing seems to compose as Ravel did, in europe, but with much more reality, on earth as it might be in even. his own piano makes me cry so deeply, as noone could do, he was surely a genius, an affective genius. In France where i am living, just a few people can hear and fell his soul, he can express both of the Klezmer identity and jazz actuality of his time...and so much more. It's not strong, it is true, from the begining to the end. With that composer, i feel confident , far away from theatre. Just a respectable man we 'd like to get friend. I also think so with Zoltan Kodaly, another style, another world, by the same faith in life and humanity. I spent my time in the Paris society of the Eightees, " Salle Pleyel", and was to much desapointed/... With Gershwing, i feel good, at home. without frontiers. Christian Guignard, France
I agree and would even go so far to say that Porgy and Bess is a much better opera than many standard operas, which are mostly full of the same love stories and fat ladies like a bollywood musical. This one is unique and portrays the (sad) story of poverty and struggle in African American society at the turn of 19th century. I think it is one of the greatest and most daring operas every written. And no one can match black singers. Just no one. They are made for classical music. Orchestras denied entry for blacks while Gershwin made an entire opera for them to sing!
I'm crying her voice is so beautiful it makes me cry she could sing about literally anything, and I would still cry because of how beautiful her voice is
My mother's and my favourite song she got up and sang summertime in a bar/club in Switzerland on holiday and stole the show. God 🙏 bless her. Her name was Kathleen Kirby from Abergavenny South Wales. Love from Martin (son)
Saw this opera at the Lyric Opera of Chicago last year and it was pure electricity from start to finish. In fact, it was probably the smash opera of the season. It's a helluva an opera. So much gorgeous music, both from the Jazz and Classical idiom. Gershwin knew how to combine them and make them mesh. It's a masterpiece.
Simply GORGEOUS!!! Gershwin was a musical genius extraordinaire. After composing the scores for Porgy & Bess, Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris and countless other immortal treasures, he died of a brain tumor in his mid-30s and passed into a myth!
Apparently Gershwin was impressed by an old Ukrainian lullaby "Oh, a dream walks about near the windows" [«Ой ходить сон коло вікон»] that bears this melody that he heard in 1929 sung by a choir under the direction of O. Koshitsa [О. Кошиця]. Gershwin finished the opera in 1935. twitter.com/History_Ukraine/status/947887954604843009
Down the years, in too many open mikes and lounges, this gorgeous song has been watered down into a listless minor-chord blues. It is such a joy to hear these mysterious, atmospheric and tragic harmonies as the composer wrote them. Thanks for posting this.
I think you mistake my meaning. I’m saying that many lesser musicians down the years have taken GG’s beautiful harmonies, indeed inspired by jazz and blues, and dumbed them down to a three-chord 12-bar with minor chords replacing the majors, losing the unique and mysterious character of his composition. A little better effort on their part to learn his harmonies would remedy that. On the other hand, they have a right to play it any way they choose, and I have a right to find their interpretation as listless, boring, inferior to the original, etc. and share that take, true?
+jdsol1938 I've listened to many dozens of versions of this great song. Some by greats, near greats, pros & beginners. Miles, Kathleen Battle, Sublime, Janis, Ella, Lady 'day, Herbie Mann, "Sassy," Whitney, Celine, Sinatra, Fantasia, Callas, Sam Cooke, Billy Stewart's over the top version,.... Nothing surpasses the original motion picture version...of course.
Bliss. Absolutely beautiful and "goose-bumpy" to listen to. June 1st 2014 today;may we all have a Summer to remember and enjoy after the months of unsettled weather.... Such a beautiful song can help us believe it will happen with bright,sunshine-y days and balmy evenings.

Ignore the 590 people who decided not to like this, they are clueless. Love how sweet she can get even with the top notes. Just Gorgeous!

Great, great Gershwin.. May god preserve !!! America all around is great!!!
It feels like a true blend of classical and jazz. Two styles come together to make something beautiful.
Ive never heard the original. But this is so beautiful. It makes me want to cry.
Me too
She sings like a Beautiful Bird. Simply Beautiful :)
Harolyn Blackwell's voice is divine! She has extraordinary control and dynamics. That last note is pure gold!
Being from Charleston, I was raised on Porgy and Bess, my Momma and Papa sang all the songs from Porgy and Bess.
Summertime is a soprano's paradise.
