In "The Matrix" simulation, in addition to integrating video game character AI for additional agents, why not make it an MMOG and let real humans control various agents (pedestrians, workers, drivers, etc)? It creates more human interactions (instead of AI).
Tons of people donated their time and resources toward SETI. I have a feeling there are a ton of people looking forward to driverless vehicles who would participate in this sort of project. Or perhaps it can be gamified to include a reward based system.

Robert Vanden Heuvel I think one of the challenging parts of introducing humans to a simulation is that humans that know they're in a simulation don't act like humans in the real world. I'm curious to see what the goal and mechanics of the game would have to be such that humans provide something constructively learnable to the ML.
Perhaps you can play the game as a vehicle or a pedestrian and the you score points or win the level (driving scene) by causing the AI to crash. You lose points for causing other humans to crash. Humans and AI play identical characters only they're actions are different. For a human they would need to come up with a way to spot the AI and a way to make it crash. Easy Difficulty levels could be adjusting the probability thresholds for AI to take an action.

Self driving cars will give people with disabilities more mobility and less dependent on other people. I hope AI is going to be used to improve public transport.
