I just finished the book and wow - I too couldn't believe I would love it as much as All the Light... but I did. I savored each page and was so very sad when it was over. Don't be turned off by the title readers - it is a real masterpiece.
couldn't agree more - weird title, great read. (Now they just need to not totally screw up the movie adaptation coming out next year for All the Light...)
@@ThePoptimist - i'm so ready to experience a visual interpretation of All the Light but can you imagine Cuckoo Land in the hands of a gifted film maker?!
Love your review. It sounds so out there, but it works. I will always remember, Tree and Moonlight, Seymour' relationship with Trustyfriend, and all of it. I worked at a library, for 25 years, and love how Doerr, shows us how literature and storytelling, are important to all of us.
My ears perked up at the comparison to Cloud Atlas. I loved that book. Your description also made me think of The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ozeki which I read last month. It was also a love letter to readers and libraries.
I loved it too! I have been struggling with reading nearly any new fiction these days with the stress of the pandemic, dissertating, and a toddler, but (because I loved All the Light we Cannot See) I had been interested to see that he had a new book coming out. When it was on the "Lucky Day" book shelf at the library, I was like, "I'll just read the fly leaf" and was like, "well, this book is written for me." Loved every page. Thanks for this beautiful review.
Also the details? The fact that some of the plot is set in early Feb. 2020 and the little girl from Australia's imagination of a perfect world is one with plenty of rain and green grass twisted my heart exactly the right way.
I love that you enjoyed it as much as I did. It felt like the perfect read for me and there were so many little bits throughout that just hit me the right way - which is one of those things is easier said than done. Just perfect.
I have this on hold at the library and you are making me feel a lot more optimistic about it! I recently heard about it on a podcast I listen to and they did not really like it. But I absolutely loved All The Light We Cannot See.
