Been watching TV and thought of you and your cats after this earthquake. How are you and those dear to you?
This was a bit surreal for me. It reminded me of something I had not thought about in a long time. Several years ago I lived in Japan (Ich bin Amerikanerin). I was very serious about karate and trained at the headquarters in Tokyo. There I met a young man from Turkey who was in Japan specifically to study karate. Prior to coming to Japan he’d emigrated to Germany with his family (mom, dad, brothers) and the only language we had in common was German, which we both spoke pretty badly. We had a brief, torrid affair and he eventually went back to Germany. A while later I left Japan and spent time traveling in Europe before going back to the States. I passed through the town he lived in on my way to my destination of Berlin, so I called him. He wasn’t home and I tried to explain to the woman on the phone, in my limited German, who I was. I can still hear her voice, “Ich bin Frau Erdogan.” We had no claims on each other so it wasn’t a heartbreak but I was still surprised he was married. I have no clue if he was already married when he was in Japan. We were young and very fit. We were both very lonely. It was nice to spend time together and I hope he has had a good life.
