  • Justin has a theory that wizards of the coast didn't watch the third doctors era of Doctor who and instead just watched the two episodes the Sea Devils and the Three Doctors

    As a big Third Doctor fan with my own Third Doctor + Sarah Jane deck, I find myself heavily disagreeing, so I want to push back against this video a bit.
    For starters, I love the Third Doctor's card. As you've said, 3 is a fighter and a tinkerer, so the effect is tying both of these together in a way that makes sense gameplaywise. The flavour isn't just that he's stealing the Master's food, it's more that he's inventing the token he needs to solve and/or get out of his current predicament.
    I agree that The Sea Devils is very overrepresented, but I disagree on the idea that it's not an absolute banger of a story.
    You bring up The Master being based on hypnotising people, but you failed to mention that the art is a reference to Terror of the Autons. Furthermore, the alt art is a reference to The Daemons (overrated story tbh).
    I agree that Displaced Dinosaurs doesn't quite fit the episode, but I do recognise that it's a sick card, and that it's designed to synergise with the Blast from the Past Historic theme as a whole, so I'm not too harsh on it.
    I think it's odd that you see The Brigadier as being a copy of Kate Steward's card. I've always seen it as being the other way around.
    I agree with everything you've said about Jo Grant and Mike Yates.
    Finally, there's actually two cards you've missed that are references to the Third Doctor era. Firstly, one of the two basic mountains is actually Peladon Castle. It took me a bit to notice, since Peladon was so gloomy in the show, but it's pretty unmistakably Peladon once you see it.
    Secondly, Celestial Colonnade is Altantis. You know, from The Time Monster? And that giant woman in the background? It's Kronos. You know, the titular Time Monster. Not so cowardly now, are they?

      first, Thanks for a really good response to my video!
      For the third doctor's card, i like the idea but feel like the execution is very weak and comes off as gimmicky. At least in my opinion. I do also feel like the food token is a specific reference to the third doctors most popular scene, it just also happened to work really well with what they were going for. As i said in the video, i feel like the color limitations hurt some of the early doctors. I am glad he works for you, i just never got into it. There is something to be said for me not being happy with his power level.
      I do love the sea devils, but i speak the truth of it's quality. Season 9 is lacking, especially compared to 11, 8, and 10
      You are correct, i should have mentioned the art references. I noticed them and didn't point them out when i should have. It left the discussion in this video more unfair then it should have been. Though I'd still argue it's very reductive to one of the best characters in classic who. plus effect wise it fits into the sea devils theme. (Deamons is good, check out the originally aired movie edit, it's the best pacing in doctor who until Baker)
      Displaced Dinosaurs is weird and i just wished i got something more aligned to one of my favorite stories. Which is why i gave it less of a pass than most people.
      For this i feel like the Brigadier and Kate Steward should have just been their own thing entirely. They're two separate characters with great appearances and stories. I feel it leaves both of them somewhat less unique. The tone of the video fails the communicate the nuance of my point and i'm sorry for that confusion.
      Jo grant deserved better and Yates deserved something.
      I flat out missed these two references wholesale. I do feel like these aren't great representations of their episodes to the point where they could be easily missed. The Peladon one is definitely on me, you can call me out on this. But for Atlantis i feel they took such extreme liberties with their representation of the insane visuals in the episode, they're fundamentally not really the time wizard. I understand why they had to do it, but a commitment to bit is what would have made me happy. considering that's a key part to why people love classic doctor who.
      I'd make the video differently today, but i still think most of my points hold up. Again thank you for having a discourse with this topic. It's rare i ever get to talk about the third doctor with anyone.

    Just by the title alone, it's clear this is the problem with Universes Beyond, aside from licensing.
    They're taking huge franchises that clearly require fans to even explain what it's actually about on the surface.
    I get that you can't please everyone, but you gotta please at the very least.
    Tbh, I'd prefer to see references than outright importing characters to MtG. Copyright holders can get really stingy, as we see with Victor Miller and Friday the 13th.
    One W (nothing to brag home about, but considering MtG, it kinda is) Yu-Gi-Oh! had is that when they do reference something nowadays, it's fun for those who don't and do know the references. Dragonmaid, anyone?
    Even then, the Dragonmaid stood on their own merits.

    Can you actually expect Wizards of the Coast's development team to watch something so old and obscure and be able to understand it?
    Most of the people that worked in this were not even born or were too young at the time the classic series was running and there was a lot of hurdles to transmit Doctor Who beyond the UK (just like there was a lot of hurdles to transmit Star Trek beyond the US) during those decades.
    So the only way to partially know about the Third Doctor are basically novels, which are not that accurate since authors tend to use a lot of imagination to write them and that's why most of them are not even canon today

    • @MonkeyFightTCG
      @MonkeyFightTCG  11 месяцев назад +8

      Honestly outside of the internet archive which has the entirety of classic who on it, the best way to watch is is through the new blue rays. If only the BBC would release them faster

      @@MonkeyFightTCG Yeah, that would've help a lot, if Wizards had the entire Third Doctor Run on hand by the time they were making the Doctor Who Commander Decks (although what it would be amazing is releasing an entire set similar to Lord of the Rings but centered around Doctor Who), it would be more easier for them

    • @syco7274
      @syco7274 10 месяцев назад

      I mean you can expect someone to know what they are referring to, if they are a franchise this big. They might be too young, but thats their job. If your electrician doesnt know some piece of tech from the 90 you still expect them too look up how it works/ how to fix it

    • @alpha34098
      @alpha34098 10 месяцев назад +1

      @syco7274 It's not that simple to get all that info they need about something so obscure such as the Classic Doctor Who. Most people only know Modern Doctor Who and what you could find of the Classic one are basically snippets that are barely watchable in this day and age, that's not really enough to inform themselves about it
      So, basically, they were forced to rely on novelizations of some of the episode to get the info they need since, as Monkey said, BBC is being too slow at remastering the Classic Doctor Who series.
      And all I'm mentioning is about getting it. Because the next part of making a Universes Beyond product is Understanding the source which is another thing entirely

      Bessie - actually a really good representation of the car.
      K-9 - this little guy is insanely strong and it's funny how relevent he is.
      Everybody lives - a great card and. Great representation of the scene meant to 9
      The flood of Mars - a great snowball creature that extremely flavourful
      Blink and the other weeping angel stuff was done very well as well.

    Have you read Lawrence Miles' thread on xtwt about the cards? He's decidedly mixed on the classic cards. I'm even more harsh on the entire affair than he is - I think the color identities of characters are often deeply wrong, and this all stems from their decision to group Doctors together chronologically, which makes no sense from a design perspective unless your frame of reference is "I really like 9 10 and 11, and the classic era is basically the same thing as each other, oh, and 12 and 13 happened too." There are some really decent designs, sure, but there are just some baffling choices as well, (7 as Azorious?) and the entire affair feels fundamentally flawed as a result.

  • @vitsajfrt6108

    I do agree with you here. But i do think its a problem with the whole deck. Since the deck it self has to acomidste 8 doctors. So there going to be alot of characters missing. I do think they should have changed out a few characters for others. Or give other doctors more representstion. 8th doesent realy have any storie themed cards associated to him. And i belive 7th has only like one or two cards.

    I have a few problems. I have yet to play the 10/11 deck, but I’ve played all the others a few times now with different commanders. I have two major problems with what I’ve seen so far.
    1. The sixth doctors card is really flavorless
    2. I can’t run the commander deck as is with Bill and 12 as commanders for some reason, 12 has to take a 13 companion or Clara which is a bit disappointing since genuinely she’s not even that red of a character.
