  • Sponsored by Firestone, this Drag Racing classic from 1970 takes you to Amarillo Dragway and the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo, Texas. For a deeper understanding of the sport of Drag Racing, take a tour of the pits and the vehicles, safety gear, different classes, rules, and some wheel stand action shots of cars down the quarter mile. The giant Firestone Drag Slicks put the rubber to the asphalt. Don Gartlits rail, other drag racing classics as the camera roams the site. The film zero's in on Jim Thompson's Rod Shop, and the 1970 Dodge Challenger C Gasser that takes him to victory. Transferred from a very faded color 16mm film, some color correction added.

Garlits' rear engine dragster did not appear until 1971.
All this I saw from afar, in England, by magazines which I was so lucky to get.
Seeing these videos is bringing back memories and adding a dimension I missed.....the sounds..😎

I've never seen this video before. I was very surprised to see the Firestone tire technician was none other than Bill Abraham. He raced with "Akron" Arlen Vanke and is best remembered for driving winning Pontiacs. Sadly, Bill passed away too young in a traffic crash while on his way to see the Indy 500 one year.

World Finals in 1970 were at Dallas, this is likely 1971 when the Finals move to Amarillo until 1973
