US vs UK Christmas Special 2023 | Food Wars | Insider Food
My takeaways on the Starbucks section, as a US Starbucks barista: 1) Glad to have gingerbread lattes back (didn’t have them for 3 years), but still salty that the UK has eggnog and we don’t; 2) Surprised gingerbread loaf and snowman cookies are only available in some regions of the US. I have them in my store (in the San Francisco Bay Area); and 3) Bring back South Pole Sam and North Pole Nat, Starbucks UK! Why you gotta do Harry dirty like that? 🥺
This continues to be an excellent series! However, it's a shame when some things aren't tried by the presenters. One of the key selling points of Food Wars is watching the hosts put their body through real torture in the name of telling us how things taste 🤣
43:47 this is true, there's plenty of historical evidence such as recipes from Tudor courts like Henry VIII's and from mentions in food available at places like Shakespeare's Globe Theatre that "Mince" pies DID originally have Minced Beef (still spiced with Christmas spices like Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Cloves) the fruit only versions were much later to coincide with sweet food desires of the Georgian (1700s) period, and as a way for the wealthy to show off that they could afford expensive fresh fruit to go into pies (rather than mince which is made from the cheapest cuts of meat) which over time became cheaper to be made.
Back in the days of the original Mince pie though the pastry wasn't as sweet or crumbly and would instead have been more like the hard pastry of a Melton Mowbray style "pork pie"
43:38 It is made with mincemeat, but it is not made with *minced meat.*
Mincemeat (just like its cousin sweetmeat) uses a much earlier definition of "meat" that simply meant "food in general" rather than specifically animal-based food. It’s only now the original secondary definition of meat has become the dominant one that mincemeat and sweetmeat seem like misnomers, but they’re really not. They’re simply using an earlier definition of the word "meat" that no longer really survives outside of those two specific cases.
we want the sweet meats, we suck young blood
Love watching these Christmas specials every year. Thanks guys!
Yay! I've been waiting for this Special since last year's edition! Amazing Hosts and fun show to watch!
Thanks for doing these specials every christmas guys - really enjoy them!
Christmas came early, thanks guys, seasons tidings to all at Insider Food, love all these vids :D
Nice to see both Nico and Joe in this video
Nico refusing to try stuff is kinda lame imo 🙅🏻♂️
Who’s Nico
@@paulmatz8908 the girl you see on the thumbnail and the video
Forgot harry

After Eight mints were a staple of the holidays at my house. It was a treat when my mom would pick some up at random times of the year too.
Thx, I've been waiting for it❤ merry christmas to everybody!
This was quite the wholesome episode 🎉☃️❄️
Happy holidays and merry Christmas to the entire Food Wars team and community.
UK here and my family usually have a baked camembert for a starter before xmas dinner. I dunno how widespread that tradition is, but McDonald's picking camembert as the xmas cheese makes sense to me
Aye 45 minutes of Food Wars with Joe and Harry plus Nico let's Go 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Fun exclusive holiday fact: the Elf Krispy Kreme in the UK actually have an exclusive Christmas tree donut that we don't have in our US Elf donuts.
These christmas episodes are always good Insider Food 👍
The Chicken Big Mac - They watched Jolly, hope Josh and Olly got some kick back.
Brilliant video!
I see Joe has a similar opinion to me with Reeces...any "shaped" Reeces taste horrible, but I love the regular ones.
Nico should try the regular nutty buddy. It is covered in chocolate. They taste loads better than the shaped Reeces. I like butterfinger, but they are difficult for me to eat these days...I would much prefer a nutty buddy over the butterfinger.
Yes to Holiday Specials!
Keep the bucket hat Joe 👌🏻
Yes here it is!
Merry Christmas to food Wars
Harry : Colin the caterpillar cake is for kids
26 year old me : This is my favourite cake for my birthday, and we get the Xmas version every damn year 😂👌
Stroopwafels 🇳🇱 it is a thing over here. Mcdonalds sometimes has a Stroopwafel mcFlurry. Great with our (only I think) special; the McKroket.
Those cranberry bliss bars are 👌🏾 I love buying the box of them
Absolutely love these specials. And love Joe's Christmas sweater.
As someone who grew up in Hershey and worked at the giant chocolate store, I feel like you could do a whole holiday candy food wars by itself and all the us candy could just be stuff owned by Hershey it’s insane how much they do for every freaking holiday
The Starbucks part is my all time fav
Harry’s costume is sooo cuteeeeee 😭❤
good episode , had popeye for first time cple weeks ago liked it even had an american buscuit with cajun gravy , im a big fan of america biscuits and there other alter ego as scones , i see dominos do a turkkey pizza but had pizza xpress xmas pizza cple awhile ago and that blew me away how nice it is but as im having pheasant breast for xmas with bread sauce and all trimings i guess expecting pheasantr burger out of question can u clarify eggnog latte i couldnt find it advertised so bought own syrup and my friend whose a barrista in indianna srabucks said its off menu in usa
The fact that pigs in a blanket are hot dogs wrapped in bacon In England blew my mind 🤯
What might blow your mind more is people buy these things ready made. The average Brit is now becoming incapable of wrapping bacon around a sausage and saving a bunch of money.
I love the Dunkin seasonal drinks, specifically the coffees. Around Christmas my personal favorites are the White Chocolate and the Peppermint Mocha both iced. I have tried the Cookie Butter and it’s not bad. Their Fall drinks are awesome, especially the Pumpkin Spice one.
Love these videos
IN germany we have the "Big Rösti" at mcD in decembers :D a treat every year. itsa beef burger with a rösti, raclette cheese and a cheese and bacon bun
Joe, praline is hard crack caramel hot sugar poured over nuts, cooled and broken into tiny pieces. Like peanut brittle kind of
that is wrong, that it krokant
37:05 and what time were you opening this packet?
Reeses trees shouldn't count as you can get them all year round same as After Eights and terrys.
Not in the US.
@marydavis5234 that's funny as we have the reeses trees all year round in the uk.
I would love mozzy sticks here in usa and i had that xmas custard it…tastes like blended birthday cake till its a mush then put into a flaky pie crust, its not bad but bot great.... and also always felt a lota food places that are here and uk, here their kinda lackluster on thinking of holiday ideas but then the uk gets all these cool menue items and selections its like OMG THATS AMAZING..... sucks their to concerned with profit here over variety..... i miss my grilled chicken from mc donalds T_T
Merry Christmas 🎄 Happy Holidays
That's Sunday evening sorted 👍🏻
Happy holidays everyone!!!
What a great video also I love the channel. Hope you’re all well.
The best KK Christmas donut (in Australia anyway) is the Christmas tree with the KitKat trunk
"The big and cheesy NOT THE BIG CHEESY but the big AND cheesy" two seconds later: ThE biG ChEeSy wiTh bAcOn
Hello British friends, I hope that the UK and Christmas Island will always live in harmony and harmony.😊🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇨🇽🇨🇽🇨🇽
Nice
This is interesting 😮
Nice ❤
The Galaxy Caramel pie was sooooooooo good. Honestly, I loved it. The Big and Cheesy weren't bad either 😌.
ive just been to Berlin and have one of the best bagels of my life at Shakespeare & sons. Also what about a "London style" bagel? we have a super iconic bagel shop in east london and the style is very different from others ive had.
Super curios to see what the differences in method are.
Every time, they forget about my tomato dip!
Wow I have not been up to date on the Colin the caterpillar discourse!! Great video, it made me want a stroopwafel right now 😊
Is this old or new because there are lot of the same ones in previous comparison as well.
Joe makes me want to like these videos multiple times 😂😂😂
Would love to know the KFC UK gravy formula. In the US it's like "Christmas at a Mad Chemist's Home"...full of everything but gravy..."Gravy: Enriched with Wheat Flour (Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid),
Food Starch-Modified, Maltodextrin, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Salt, Chicken Fat, Monosodium
Glutamate, Dextrose, Mono and Diglycerides, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Natural and Artificial Flavor (with
Hydrolized Corn Protein, Hydrolyzed Corn Soy, Wheat Gluten Protein, Monosodium Glutamate, Autolyzed
Yeast Extract, Gelatin, Hydrolyzed Torula and Brewers Yeast Protein, Lactose), Caramel Color (with Sodium
Bisulfate), Onion Powder, Dehydrated Cooked Chicken, Spice, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate,
with not More Than 2% Silicon Dioxide added as an Anti-caking)
Contains: Wheat, Soy and Milk. ". I am not kidding here. What happened to chicken drippings and then add flour.
Galaxy here in America is Dove chocolate
I'm British but live in the US and I love eggnog ❤
love the addition of nico to this episode!!! she's so fun.
Where is her accent from? Love it! Very cool lady 😎 x
❤
@@findlaywalker3513i’m from upstate ny! 😊
The US really loves dishing out a plethora of Holiday sugar-packed treats. Nice combo to have Joe, Nico and Harry. 🎄 🍫 👏 😋
good video
I live in Kansas and Terry's chocolate oranges are and have always been my favorite holiday treat
42:20 - Greggs was not founded in the north of the UK, it was started in Newcastle.
in my hometown city centre (in the north) I think I counted twelve or thirteen separate greggs’
Please do south Africa!
Good idea! That’d be entertaining! Happy holidays
NOT THE SAME WITHOUT GEORGE!!!
Not the Walkers turkey crisps.
It's sorta became a family joke about my rather visceral reaction to those crisps! To me they tasted like gone off chicken, I found them so revolting, it tasted literally exactly like bad chicken to me! But my reaction was so bad that yeah, my mum was too scarred to eat crisps for a while after haha
Is Joe a bucket hat guy? Yes! yes you are! you look good.
We have the Krispy Kreme donut collection in the uk…
I love apple pie too
Gingerbread oat milk chi hot is incredible joe.
I really enjoyed the KFC stuffing tower burger!
Joe makes me want to like these videos multiple times
NOT SOUTH POLE SAM!!! 😭😭😭 Rest easy bro 🕊️
I used to work at five guys and oreo actually sends restaurants just oreo cream in a more liquid form for shakes so I wonder if that’s the same for the house
I'm new to watching, do you guys get a lot of food waste or do you share it out after filming? :D
I love elf!!!
Can you guys start putting the calories per item when it’s on the screen?
Dunkin in the uk has a brilliant Christmas range of doughnuts 🍩
Would be interesting to see the most popular 20 items in US vs UK.. 😊😊
Yes the OG Joe and Harry are back
I’m so sad that there’s no gingerbread latte and gingerbread loaf this year in the UK :(
Would a McFlurry with Terrys orange have a fanbase in the UK ? 😅
I lov this channel

Camembert is 100% a festive cheese used around Christmas. I’d argue it’s more festive than brie (though I also love that).
I was looking forward to the festive pie at mcDonalds . it the only thing worth buying from there. Gutted to find out they not selling them this year :(
Where was the up festive pot noodle
Festive bake at greets is Chicken and NOT Turkey
0:57: "Next up, we have the Big & Cheesy. Not the Big Cheesy, the Big _and_ Cheesy. Look at that.
"And we also have the Big Cheesy with bacon."
I like your content, but may I suggest to raise the audio volume? Your audio is about 3 dB quieter than what is typically used by youtube, and when commercials kick in they are WAAYYYY too loud in comparison.
I see 1000 things everyday I made sure this was one of them
As an European, I felt triggered by the American pronunciation of praline 🤣
They forget my tomato dip every time!
If you ever want to do a Canadian episode i would be happy to help :)
wow
You should try McDrwal from Poland 😊
A 45 minute episode!! We are in for a treat guys!
32:33 EXCUSE ME!!!!?
I miss after eight. The ones you can get in the US are very expensive and then not nearly as fresh since all imported. Aldi or LIDL had a knockoff a couple of years ago that was identical to the original.
Harry, the sandwich you mentioned with a patty of stuffing.....I heard about a sandwich that features stuffing that has been made into a waffle, then used instead of the bread with a turkey sandwich.
Wow, so many bah humbugs commenting! I love food wars and its a nice, entertaining watch. Happy holidays 🎉
