    That operator in the beginning looked like he really loved his job, really was into it. I'm also surprised they had automated announcements in the trains in 1988 (although I guess I wasn't alive back then, maybe this was more common).
    It's also interesting to see just how not built out downtown is, a stark contrast to how it is now.

    • @vidwilzvids9587
      @vidwilzvids9587  2 года назад +1

      Actually, they weren't automated announcements; this operator must have had some kind of announcer voice training. You can see him hit the mike switch before each announcement. Thanks for the comment.

      @@vidwilzvids9587As per the documentation for the car, the units came with built-in cassette players for announcements, on top of the external and internal PA system. Might be that this one likes to do them himself, but they definitely had systems in place for automated announcements.

    I find it neat that the San Diego trolley had their own signals at intersections. The Kansas City streetcar, which started running in 2016, obeys normal traffic lights except at Union Station where it changes direction
    12:07 nice to see a single car! I've usually seen the San Diego Trolley trains in pairs or trios
    20:24 if there's a box car still there, does that mean diesel freight trains still ran on this track?!

      The first single car at Euclid Sta. was chartered by a railfan group. That line to Euclid had only been operating for a couple of weeks at the time. The San Diego & Arizona Eastern ran diesel-powered freight operations over the system at night. Thanks for the comment.

      Where was that gauntlet at?

    • @vidwilzvids9587
      @vidwilzvids9587  6 лет назад

      On the East Line where it crosses over the 805 freeway between 43rd St. & 47th St. Station. Like James Patterson noted if you zoom in on Google Maps' satellite view you can see the long ties that carried the four rails of the gauntlet before the bridge was widened. The gauntlet was protected by block signals. A local told me that it also had a trip circuit and that the gauntlet was longer than the bridge to allow for a worst case scenario.

    • @Robotechnology101
      @Robotechnology101 6 лет назад +1

      There are two at the OERM and two at the WRM. Vidwilzvids the reason I was told they had to retire them was due to a number of reasons. Firstly they could not easily equip them with on board security cameras as well as the fact that the U2 cars could not MU with the newer cars. Also MTS was working on swiching over to low floor cars so the SD100 cars which came out in the 1990s will likely be retired in the next 10 years given they like the U2 are high floor.

    • @macmaniacal
      @macmaniacal 5 лет назад

      @@Robotechnology101 There's no reason why you can't install cameras to any vehicle. I feel when they stop using the SD100's they will not be retired, and instead likely sold and used elsewhere.

    This is so strange to see. I've grown up around Frankfurt in Germany, which is where their German cousins ran up until 2015 I believe. This cab is completely different to the German one and nowadays door 1 by the cab folds outward for a wheelchair lift...
    The Frankfurt variant had the stairs filled in (similar to Calgary) to allow for high floor platforms. The doors by the joint were also eventually refitted to remove the middle bar and have them moved to the side, for better wheelchair accessibility.
