Hi Sir! I am new into this sport. I heard you said "Less point of engagement, less drag." I don't really understand the meaning of the term drag here. Can you or someone help explain it a little bit? Thanks :)
Quick question I bought an SWorks Tarmac SL7 and it’s super quiet when freewheeling. My friends Giant SLR1 is way louder, and mine is like on mute. Is there something wrong with my wheels?
it should be pretty load, is it a frame build and what wheels did you choose if they are the new alpinist or rapide wheels they shouls have a nice ratchet
I bought the whole sworks bike - with the roval rapide clx. The shop said that it might be because of the grease, and that it will get louder once I break it in. Is that correct?
thanks so much, but you can not do this with the starting wheels, you need nicer hubs that can take a ratchet hub, so something with at least a dt swiss 350, so when upgrade wheels just look for that
no, all you need to do is have the wheel secure against something like a wall and just pull up on the back of the cassette and it will all pull off, just take note of everything and put it back exactly how it came off. notice the springs when you remove it, just do it slowly and cautiously
Will the 54t make it noticeably louder? I sold my Xr 1700 wheels because I didn't like the sound of the 36t ratchet. Now I have a chance to buy a carbon wheelset with dt 350s and wondering if I upgrade to 54t if I'll like the sound more.. Any thoughts on this? I like the sound of the i9 1/1 hubs, will the 54t get me close to that?
@@GCPerformance18 awesome to hear! I actually just pulled the trigger on a Traverse SL set that uses the 240 hubs with 54t ratchet. Super excited to try them! Thanks for replying!
I like the sound of the 54s but I have the 18s on all my wheels and Im not to concerned with being the loudest wheel in town so Ill stick with my 18s :)
if your climibing, you wont get any dead spots in your pedla stroke there is much more points of engagement but for descending there is more drag when freewheeling lol
Hey not sure if it's true but when I swapped out my 18t for 36t, i feel like the down shifts are smoother and had less of a jolt, like with my 18t, there's a louder and more disturbing clonk , whereas the 36t seems to downshift smoother
thats crazy and awesome lol, It doesnt make sense for that to be true but maybe after it was done the person who installed it adjusted the gears a little better or maybe the cassette lined up better after it... who knows lol but I am glad you enjoy it
I'm guessing if you're not into obnoxiously loud free hubs you could "downgrade" the Rapide CLX to 18t?! Really cool video by the way as I was never quite sure about servicing my 350 hubs but it really does look easy
Yea you can put 18 to bring down the noise and also add more grease. But yes it’s very easy to do. You don’t even have to remove the cassette if you don’t want too. Super simple
@@Crectus yea that was jsut for show, I wasnt doing it at the moment just to show you all how to do it, I would do a very light amount on the teeth myself
putting the 54 tooth in a road wheelset is a huge mistake. I tried it for all of 10 seconds and immediately put my 36 tooth back in. the 54 is so much more drag, hence why no road wheels ever come with the 54 tooth. 54 tooth is for mtb where instant engagement is more important than the added resistance/friction. obviously, people can do whatever they want. just wanted to say that the 54 tooth is noticeably slower than the 36.
drag in terms of............. like you not pedaling? then yea you will get more drag if you stop pedaling, you will also get more beenift from climbing because less dead spots and more points of engagments..... also your body mass on the bike and the drag you are just sitting up is more drag then the difference you will feel for that
@@GCPerformance18 drag in terms of the wheels having more resistance = having to pedal more. While in the bunch getting sucked along, I certainly don't want to have to pedal when I can be coasting. Just saying, I tried the 54 tooth and the added drag was considerable for me to notice it..I'm not the pickiest rider. And going up to the 54 from the 36 will not help when climbing on a road bike. Climbing on a road bike is constant pedaling, there's no dead spot on the road bike while climbing. Mtb has the half crank pedal strokes that need the 54 tooth, like going up a rocky technical section on a climb. Again, it's obviously personal preference. But after trying it for myself, I couldn't ever imagine using the 54 tooth on the road.

@gc performance do you recommend to use the spring included in the dt kit? Or do I use the spring on my 21 tarmac sl7 cl50?
Great videos, just subscribed 👍
Do you know what kind of hubs does Reynolds AR58X use and are they loud??
Thanks bro!!
It’s there own brand. But it has a 4 pawl engagement and it is loud. Sounds really nice!!!
@@GCPerformance18 thanks bro, keep it up with the videos!!

Lmaoo honestly or as me and boys call it. A screaming baby you can’t ignore lol
Hi GC Performance. I just purchased a 2021 Specialized Tarmac SL6 Comp with stock hubs without branding. Can I upgrade its ratchet like this one in your video?
No you can’t, you would have to get a wheel upgrade first, and then do that. Look at roval c38 for $1200
GC Performance thanks for your quick reply. May I know the part number of this upgrade kit ratchet? Thanks! Cheers!

Hey beginner rider here but can I replace my 18 tooth ratchet on the DT Swiss R470 ? Any links to higher tooth ones that fit?
no the r470 is a pawl system the ratchet system only works on 370 and up
Hi Sir!
I am new into this sport. I heard you said "Less point of engagement, less drag."
I don't really understand the meaning of the term drag here. Can you or someone help explain it a little bit?
Thanks :)
when freewheels and hearing more noise all that noise is being caused by drag.... so the louder it is the worst it is sometimes
@@GCPerformance18 appreciate your reply, sir! :)
Can i change these on an older model wheel, the roval slx 24?
yes you can
@@GCPerformance18 thank you for the response can i use this same dt swiss 54t ratchet ? It has a Roval AF1 hub
another great video. can I do this for my Roubaix w R470db (budget) wheels?
thanks so much, but you can not do this with the starting wheels, you need nicer hubs that can take a ratchet hub, so something with at least a dt swiss 350, so when upgrade wheels just look for that
Thanks for this! Have some C38s with DT 350 hubs, guessing possible with those as well?
your welcome and also yes this is possible with them :)) just need to buy the parts and then an easy switch :))
Link in the description to a part number from your store so we can support you through buying from you ;)
Call me if you need it bicycle generation
so, you mention that they work on any dt hub...will it work on the one that comes in the allez sprint?
as long as they are dt350
@@GCPerformance18 does the 2021 come with a dot 350? It doesn’t say on the website, that’s the bike I have
Can you make , what is the best part to upgrade for my Allez elite ?
Let me see what I can do but I think I can do something like that
@@GCPerformance18 my girlfriend have an Allez Expert with DT Swiss R460, it is possible to update to star ratchet system?
My 2020 SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod comes with Cannondale's Hollowgram Knot 45 wheels with DT Swiss hubs. Will these same ratchets work?
Yes any dt Swiss ratchets will work
do you have a video on how to remove the free wheel body/shell thingy?
Like the cassette body?? I can make one. You just have to pull up on it.
@@GCPerformance18 10-4 haven't tried yet just curious. thanks for the response
@@simpletraveler86 yea no worries, it is very easy though you literally just have to pull up, and it gives you like a pop when you release it
@@GCPerformance18 seriously? You don’t need a chain whip or remover tool for these? I’m hesitant to start yanking on these things.
Do these work with the new DT 370 star-ratchet freehub (roval C38)???
yes they do but you might need the new exp ones
Is it possible to make shamal ultra hub sound louder as these roval? Thanks
I dont know which hubs those are I am so sory
Do I need a special tool to take off the cassette to install the tooth ratchet or can I just take off by hand?
no, all you need to do is have the wheel secure against something like a wall and just pull up on the back of the cassette and it will all pull off, just take note of everything and put it back exactly how it came off. notice the springs when you remove it, just do it slowly and cautiously
The 54t is noticeably louder like insanely
@@GCPerformance18 awesome to hear! I actually just pulled the trigger on a Traverse SL set that uses the 240 hubs with 54t ratchet. Super excited to try them! Thanks for replying!
Earlier today got 54t in my 240 Dicut hubs. It’s an XDR it still pops off like that if I have to maintenance ratchet?
what do you mean? these dt swioss are meant to pop off like that...
@@GCPerformance18 ok I didn’t know that
Does it works on dt swiss 470 db? The wheelset that come in allez disc comp built bike?
it does not, im sorry
I like the sound of the 54s but I have the 18s on all my wheels and Im not to concerned with being the loudest wheel in town so Ill stick with my 18s :)
yea that is always a good thing and for sure you can always add it later
Thanks a lot. I will do it for my bike.
thats awesome have fun and enjoy the ride :)
what's a good recommended service interval for regreasing the ratchet?
Hope you're also balancing that wheel...
How..... what do you want me to do? Cut off the valve sticking out?
@@GCPerformance18 Silca speed balancers, or golf tape
@@tmunk123 but i mean honestly on the road you are not going to feel that and plus I dont want to put gold tape on my wheels
@@GCPerformance18 You do feel it. Especially for deeper wheels.
Put the lead tape (or whatever you use) on the interior of the rim. I put it under the tubeless rim tape. I’m definitely a wheel balancer type.
Other than the louder sound, are there any other performance gains?
if your climibing, you wont get any dead spots in your pedla stroke there is much more points of engagement but for descending there is more drag when freewheeling lol
@@GCPerformance18 i suppose just gotta keep on pedalling then
Hey not sure if it's true but when I swapped out my 18t for 36t, i feel like the down shifts are smoother and had less of a jolt, like with my 18t, there's a louder and more disturbing clonk , whereas the 36t seems to downshift smoother
thats crazy and awesome lol, It doesnt make sense for that to be true but maybe after it was done the person who installed it adjusted the gears a little better or maybe the cassette lined up better after it... who knows lol but I am glad you enjoy it
if i run it with no grease, will it it wear off more quickly?
also how often to re-grease it?
Does this apply to rovals clx60 rapide? Am I able to switch to 54 t ?
yes same thing
I'm guessing if you're not into obnoxiously loud free hubs you could "downgrade" the Rapide CLX to 18t?!
Really cool video by the way as I was never quite sure about servicing my 350 hubs but it really does look easy
Yea you can put 18 to bring down the noise and also add more grease. But yes it’s very easy to do. You don’t even have to remove the cassette if you don’t want too. Super simple
@@GCPerformance18 it is cool that you can just tailor it to what you prefer.
So if I want Lauder wheels then only need to change ratchet??? 😯
yea that is but it needs to be a dt swiss ratchet

@@khoori1 thanks so much and I will try to help you out
putting the 54 tooth in a road wheelset is a huge mistake.
So what would be the best one for pure performance advantage? Would it be the 36t because of the less drag or would it still be the 54t
36T should suffice, 54T isn't necessary.
Can I change the ratchet on my 2020 Specialized Diverge Comp5 Evo?
No I’m sorry you can not. You would need to upgrade wheels first to like the c38 carbon wheels
if the ratchet works on both 240 and 350 hubs, then what's the difference- if they have the same ratchet?
Weight of the hubs or bearings.
@@GCPerformance18 thanks for the reply. Is the 350 better/lighter than the 240 (stock for stock)?
Princess_Yow no the 240 is better. Think about the lower the number the better it is. 180 comes with ceramic bearings. 240 just a lighter hub shell
@@GCPerformance18 😄 I wish I knew this before buying 350 wheels. I thought the higher the # the better.
@@ayowser01 the 350 wheels are stil really nice though honestly it wil be nothing that me or you would feel :)) so no worries youi prob got a better deal to for them
Looks like wheel and tyre out of balance?
That’s how all carbon deep dish wheels are. Because of the valve sticking out of the rim
The freehub on the SL7 pro is abysmal. Really wished it was louder
Just get the 54t ratchet and you will notice a huge difference!!!😁😁
Can someone message me where to buy this bike? I'm looking for Specialized SL7 Pro with the same color. My size is 52. Looking for weeks already and I can't find one. Please message me. Tia
its so hard to find this bike, especially in this color and spec
does "not greasing" the ratchets make them wear out faster?
Yea they will but nothing crazy different. But I recommend a very small amount of grease very thin just put some on your finger tip and rub it on there like neosporin on a cut
I thought the 40T freehub on my ENVE 45 is loud enough....... 54t might be great for an MTB, but it is totally an overkill for a road bike.
yea its loud for sure just like zipp wheels have 66 paws of engagement and industry 9 way more also Reynolds wheels but they are all preference.
I9 hydra ftw

you can, my friend does it and its super loud but you will get more drag when coasting, but you can achieve that same loudness with just a thin layer of the grease on there, that's what I would recommend but you can run without grease. I don't recommend though
