Thanks for another lesson! I'm saving all these to practice later once I have more time put aside. I'm still a beginner and a lot of Alice's songs get me inspired to practice - you're definitely helping with that. Interesting about the capo stuff, never noticed that! Pretty sure no capo for this song when I saw her.
I saw her in NYC with my cousin, who wasn't that familiar with Alice but I think this concert really knocked her socks off. Surprised me too actually. I'd seen her just once before in person, a couple years ago when she opened for Billy Bragg in my home town. Been following her career for almost a decade though, just rarely have opportunities to see her. Alice has grown a lot as a performer - her voice is really something else. Definitely worth the 4-hour train ride to an unfamiliar city. Hope you can make it to the next tour!
She changed her tuning quite a few times during the show, and I'm not sure what exactly did it but this rendition of Fynbos had a certain _darkness_ to the guitar that I'm not used to. For all I know that was an accident; at one point she said she was having trouble keeping it in the right tune. But I thought it sounded hauntingly beautiful. She got into the meat of what My Girl is about for her; what other people are dealing with but also her own struggles feeling safe from her long-time stalker who the German legal system won't protect her from. She got pretty choked up ahead of performing the song, so it wasn't a perfectly executed rendition but it was _impactful_ to say the least. Played it on a keyboard, as it was originally written. She rallied after that song, came back sounding better than before.
Partway through the show her opening act Sam Burton came back on for a surprise duet, "Early Morning Rain". Alice had her lyrics on paper because she hadn't memorized them, warned us she'd make mistakes. She did make mistakes but god it was magical to hear. I really hope somebody captured that. I'm never one to film things. For the duet she didn't play an instrument, put it all into singing. They actually both played the same guitar for their own separate performances, some kind of Gibson acoustic but I'm not certain the model. Same one she played for the Brodie sessions and ARTE concert, I think. Alice also played a Mustang for some of the hotter songs like Witches. It threw me off, when Sam walked off after his opener show I was waiting for his gear to get cleared off the stage. Then suddenly Alice walks up and just gets started with what's already there. Sam and Alice are an excellent pairing, hope to see him again with her. Sam did a phenomenal job as an opener, got me feeling all cozy. "I Can Go with You" always hits me in the spot. Hoped to hear "I Am No Moon" but we can't have everything.
No other covers from Alice for us there. Apparently in Cambridge MA she did Unfucktheworld. Always happy to hear she's still doing Angel Olsen songs all these years later.
Wish I could remember the exact setlist in NYC, kinda lost track of which songs she played but I'm sensing it was a little different for each venue. Mostly new-ish stuff. It definitely started with Halo, leading into Shine. Shine's one of my new favorites for sure. I also remember Underworld, Open My Door, Touch, Angel, Let Me, How to Get Out of Love, Drive By, Lately, Lover / / Over the Moon, Velvet Mood, Hammer.
Underworld's studio version didn't initially sell me, but this live version was really something. I guess she's trying out some more punk-rock sounds with her voice, made the song feel way more energetic.
She did a new song, which she tentatively called "Surface" but explained it's not done and nothing's final. Dreamy love song, catchy. I liked the vibe, kinda reminded me just a little bit of her direction with Strongboi but it's definitely something new and different for her.
Autographs were pre-signed on the media at the table, 'cause the busy NYC venues get Alice understandably overwhelmed. Apparently Sam was doing tarot readings, which is how the two of them originally met. I didn't have an opportunity to catch that. One of these days I have something sentimental I hope she'll sign for me at a smaller venue. I think the only _new_ piece of merch was a baseball cap with her logo, which as of today is also on her HelloMerch store. I did pick one of those up _before_ the show started, quality seems quite nice.
Some ass had her foot on my very patient cousin's back for like half the show. Not cool girl. But otherwise it was a magical night for both of us. Didn't get to say hi but Alice practically brushed against my elbow like 4 times in the lobby, clearly doing something important so I didn't interrupt.
*Edit: I think she also played Glow. Memory's a little fuzzy though - maybe I just hallucinated that one.

Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful memories. I’ve only seen Alice once in Barcelona, and, like you, it changed my life and I was completely blown away by her voice/stage presence. She happened to be sick and was drinking tea and told the crowd her vocals wouldn’t be as good, but her singing was still so amazing.
I hope you get to learn some of these tunes someday. Thanks again for your amazing comment.
