My dad was a mineral collector and had petrified logs he got in the 60's. He had them sliced and had a very large coffee table and 3 end tables made. He had to take them to a place that made gravestones to have them sliced and polished. They usually have cracks in them that are filled with epoxy before they are polished.
I have to admit that I was still clinging to a childhood imagining of petrified forest being a literal forest of standing trees turned to stone, and the knowledge that's not the case is a bit disappointing (even though it still looks really cool)
My parents have been here. They said it is beautiful in person. Pictures don't do it justice. They recommend it, to see in person. Thanx for sharing. They went to the Park, Grand Canyon, and some big Cave out there. This brought back some memories my parents shared that made them happy. (R.I.P MOM AND DAD).

Dan: If I remember correctly the diorama at Petrified was created by a Civilian Conservation Corps artist and dates to the 1930s. It's been there so long it is now considered historic and has special protections. Also, did you get a chance to check out the Painted Desert Inn at the other end of the park? It's a very creepy building and is supposed to be haunted by a female employee who died in a fire.

I was thinking that the house could be on Greenmount but saw the traffic toward the end & thought of the West side, for some reason. Either way, I always truly enjoy your work, Dan!
I like the architecture of the abandoned Baltimore house, reminds me of the large brick homes built in my native Indiana, and I got a chance to stay in a couple that were bed and breakfasts. The facing brick on the front portion looked like the narrow brick veneer common to buildings built during the 1950's, and was laid in the same pattern where the vertical mortar joints are staggered off center as seen during the 50's. So I guess that was not the original brick as seen in the rear wings, but added at a later time as a way to modernize the exterior, as is the concrete added over the wood porch floor. They often do the same thing with frame homes where they cover the wood siding in asbestos shingles, vinyl siding, or asphalt insulbrick.
That old house looked so amazing on the outside and inside it had a lot of awesome and potentially valuable stuff left in it. Surprised it was all still there. Shame it's all just left there to be trashed. I'd love to have that mirrored back display cabinet I saw in there. Petrified forest was great too. Thanks for sharing.
Dan, not sure if you've looked into these places already but I highly recommend Goblin Valley National Park in Utah and Little Wildhorse Canyon which is right down the road. Both places are incredibly surreal/beautiful and would make for some excellent quiet time.
What a nice national park, reminds me of that other video where Dan Bell visited that place with "lava" tunnels, do not remember what the name was, but real interesting. It is nice with some different videos, it does get a bit tedious with all that abandoned stuff all the time. Thanks for a great video.

We do use it often in model railroading. Envirotex epoxy resin is something I use, and a company called Woodland Scenics recently came out with some artificial water compounds.
It great to see that museums are still doing well! Dan, if you like old school display stuff, the Sanford Museum in Cherokee, Iowa is an awesome one. I used to live there and there is tons of history!
A fun legend for everyone watching, since 1935 this park has been receiving letters of apology from visitors who stole a rock or two from the petrified forest. It's more commonly known as the curse of the petrified forest and people don't know why they feel compelled to write an apology letter or why so many have been sent to the park. Coincidence or not? What do you think?

I've never been to the National Park Petrified Forest, only the Calistoga one in Sonoma Co. Mebbe someday I'll have the opportunity to see both. I'd like to see the ancient settlements u spoke of. I think I saw Miss Piggy & Foz E Bear on the living room floor. I got those for my son when he was wee. Might still have his in a downstairs closet, but woe to their Baltimore brethren. I fear their future holds only fire, deterioration, or demolition, preceded by untold days of sightless eyes staring up into a spongy collapsing ceiling. I miss the Muppet Show.

there arent many interesting places like this in my city. where I live in VA, they don't let houses sit abandoned. if you don't pay your real estate taxes they put your house up for auction. if noone buys it they tear it down asap. lol
When cities go downhill economically they dont have the money to tear down the properties. A lot of times local people will torch it in order to keep it from becoming a shooting gallery or crackhouse.

Yes that is a real dinosaur bone. They fill the enclosure with nitrogen to prevent decay and have a support structure built underneath.

Homeless squatters take refuge in abandoned buildings in the wintertime, set fires to keep warm and end up burning down the buildings.
