  • The USAT Liberty was taken over by the U.S. Army for defense services in November of 1940. When the United States entered into WWII in December of 1941, the Liberty was already in the Pacific. In January of 1942, she was en route from Australia to the Philippines with a cargo of railroad parts and rubber. On 11 January she was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-66 about 10 nautical miles Southwest of the Lombok Straight. The damaged vessel was being towed to Celukan Bawang harbor in the Lesser Sunda Islands, on the North coast of Bali. However she was taking too much water and so was beached on the eastern shore of Bali at Tulamben so that the cargo and fittings could be salvaged.
In 1963, with the eruption of Mount Agung, she slipped off the beach and now lies just off the shore at 30 meters (100 feet) to the sand with the highest point of the ship in only 5 meters (16 feet) of water.
