Melody is half rhythm, half harmony, inter-dependently. Polymeters are a way to introduce interesting or at least non-boring rhythmic structure. Actual harmonic changes ("chord changes") are missing from this stuff here, but the rhythm part makes up for it. The devices offer several tools for managing rhythmic structures, but very little or nothing at all for managing harmonic structures.
"Actual harmonic changes are missing from this". Yes. 100% yes. Managing harmonic structures is tough. I need to take it one step further before call it a track. Thanks for great and beautiful explanation. I really really like it.
@@IhorMedia I'm wondering, could you try routing one of the mod tracks (divided down) to transpose your sequence? You could have your sequence evolve with chord changes that way if you wanted to. I don't have a Metropolix, but from what I'd read I think that should be possible. I'm also not really sure how idiomatic those kind of chord changes are in techno.
That's simply not true. You can tune the oscillator to different notes and modulate the internal quantizer to different scales to achieve chord changes. Last but not Least: Techno Is All about micromovements in sounds, noise and rytmh...not about harmony
@@doverbeachxyz @DoverBeach Of course you can do chord changes if you want. But coordinating changes across sequences on multiple devices is difficult, particularly live. If you have, say, even just two note sequences playing, and you suddenly decide to change the implied chord from Cm7 to Bb6, what exactly do you do, and how many seconds does it take to do that? How many bars has the song played in that time? There is an Eurorack module called ACL Sinfonion that enables something like that, but it's quite rarely seen, for obvious reasons. :)
I‘m so happy I found this channel. It’s inspiring what you get out of the Digitakt and a small Eurorack. I’m considering ordering the small Intellijel case and move some of my modules in there. Your videos have taught me that less is more. Please keep making these videos.
I finally ordered Metropolix a couple of days ago, and just received MN XPO a few days before. Pair that with Plaits 1.2, and I have so many possibilities. This is a really nice and simple idea for using those control knobs. Paired with Tetrapad/Tete, and one control into Tiptop Z-Dsp and the other into Beads or Aurora, this could go into complete madness. Really looking forward to getting started with Metropolix.
I use a hacked Launchpad Pro MK I ( the Modular rabbithole is to deep for my GAS ): 8 times 8 step ( 4 times subdivisions ) and the option of beat division and step skip for each track… My mutable instruments are simulated ( beebo pedal ) but after all a whole cosmos of sound to explore :) Great job, less is more;)
You've got all those connections on your Intellijel midi module and midi control with your DT. All those improvisations can be sequenced with your DT, including tons of randomization and probabilities. That would leave your hands free to handle even more tweaking. Nice video, enjoyed it.
Love your inspiring recipes ... cooking is such fun :P Sadly they always end up expensive for me ... now i need to sell my metropolis and get a metropolix ;)
This is really cool - probably one of the best Eurorack setups I've seen so far (newbie). I have a challenge for you - can you duplicate something equivalent to this with the freely available/downloadble modules in VCV Rack, and post a video of it? I've tried, and am at a bit of a loss trying to figure out some of the alternatives, such as for Metropolix.
It sounds like a good idea. Not sure there is any replica of Metropolix there though. I have a few ideas for videos about VCV Rack in mind. This one goes on the list too! Thanks for watching and for suggestion!
@@IhorMedia Just found a reddit post where someone suggested Bidoo dTroy and bordL - apparently they're both inspired by Metropolix - haven't tried them yet. I think it would great to have more "here's basically the same setup in VCV Rack" style videos.
Thanks Stephen! Added a link into description! I would love to add modulargrid link to every video I make about modular, but there is a limit of only 10 racks there! Pity.
@@IhorMedia I think its more if you pay. 40 bucks a year for the amount of use i get out of that site is worth it to support. You could always add patch books as a part a patreon support offering?
Yeaah. Would love some video's about clever patching techniques, like yesterday's MylarMelodies his vid. Or how you can use a mixer as a dry wet controller in feedback mode, that kinda stuff. Awesome stuff dude
Just found your channel via Instagram. Damn, this track is SO nice! As a Digitakt owner who has been able to unlock about 13% of its capabilities, and someone who is just getting started in modular, this is so inspiring. Looking forward to digging deeper into your videos. Cheers from St. Paul, MN, USA!

A very inspiring video. I have a doepfer Eurorack Modular in connection with an Arturia Beatstep Pro for a year and can rebuild your patch in principle. I learned a lot about patching and Techno. Keep it up!
Wonderful as ever. Glad you used the plaits, as I was wondering if I could use it without a vca :D. The only thing I wish…. That you’d do more! Would live to se 30 minute jams morphing from one track to another, just as performance.
amazing and well thought out. thank *YOU* so much for teaching it to us at it's most minimal form. easy to follow the signal flow. makes it easier to learn and start. and thank *YOU* for the inspiration.
I've been an avid Metropolix user since day one and making two tracks sound musical has remained a bit of a mystery to me. Your video shows that keeping it simple can help. PS: Another good Control knob tweak I have discovered similar to what you're doing here is Pitch Pre 😄
Man you are so inspiring ! Will buy back the digitakt tomorrow. So cool result from so tiny setup. Crazy ! Can you help to understand how do you send clock and reset information to the modular case from digitakt ?
Nice jam and a very good explanation of what you do! Always good tutorials keep them coming! The Digitakt is a fantastic little machine after the last update (i use it more and more and love that little bastard)! With the Analog Four you could do more because you can sent cv and ... to control and automate more of the modular a tutorial with the analog four should be very interesting and the results should be mindblowing it think? Thank you for sharing this video!
I totally forgot about this feature on the Analog Four or Rytm, to be honest. It might be cool to utilise it as some kind of performance tool. I'll think about this. Thanks for the idea and all the kind words. I appreciate you

Ricky inspires me a lot and was the one who inspired me to create my own channel. Thank you Sapio for your kind words! Much appreciate you! And welcome on board.
Very nice! However a laptop can do exactly that and much more possibilities. I just can’t justify spending that much on modular when a computer can do more
100%! With the right tools in place a laptop can do everything and a bit more than that. Sometimes that limitlessness might become a blocker however. At least for me.
@@kookiespace exactly this. However you could try, for example, bassline to play one note and use mimetic for a lead sound. And steppy does polymetric stuff. This will work!
Thanks for another great video! 2 questions, I don’t know anything about modular and want to get a case and build a module from zero, wha would recommend for a newbie and why your case is upside down? I intend to eletrônico music with my modular set
Hey Sandro! Thanks for your kind words! Case is upside down because it is a little bit handier, when it comes to connections. Most modules have controls on top of them, hence having all the wiring at the bottom makes a lot of sense. Regarding recommendation for the getting into the modular, I am not really an expert in that. Tho I'd recommend to do a bit of research and watch a few videos here on RUclips. Then make a decision on what you want from that modular. Check ModularGrid populars. Try VCV Rack, it is free and helpful.
Is that a special mode in Plaits that allows your to change the decay with one knob turn, or is it just a parameter of that particular mode your using? I thought to change decay of Plaits internal vca you had to hold a button and then turn a knob.
This is Inharmonic string model. And this one employs its own decay envelope. And the LPG is disabled for them. I think it is like that on all the physical models in Plaits.
Melody is half rhythm, half harmony, inter-dependently. Polymeters are a way to introduce interesting or at least non-boring rhythmic structure.
