Agreed and I just want to remind everybody that some "entertainers" have been using that role as a shield for their crimes for a long time. In my country take the pdf file Jimmy Savile, as a prime example. I'm not directly comparing the two here, but the point is, Jimmy got away with his disgusting acts, most of his life by using his status as an entertainer.

These ‘pranks” definitely need to STOP.
Only friends prank each other. Friends know and trust each other not to go too far with a prank.
Friends get to know and expect pranks to be done.
Doing this to random strangers isn’t a “prank”. It might well seem like a prank to the prankster but it’s(as demonstrated here) an attack on someone designed, in some way, at some level, to intimidate/humiliate them.
I’d say a proportional response from the guy defending his girlfriend from a perceived threat.

For decades / centuries - bullies have been "pranking" people for their own amusement but we've called it out for what it is, bullying / being an @rsehole, and more recently we've introduced various "Anti-Social Behaviour Orders" so that this type of behaviour can legally be punished.
Bullying is using someone else as a subject for your own amusement at their expense and causing them unhappiness. And it is even worse when it is for an audience, especially so if that audience is "The Entire Internet for the Rest of Time".
The behaviour is exactly the same. Trying to call it a "prank" now, doesn't change anything. They are negatively targeting an innocent member of the public and causing them distress.
