  • How to save or revive a dying Calathea plant? Calathea is one of the most sensitive plants and they die even if we do little bit here and there. The initial symptoms is visible on leaves - they would become crispy and start drying. Or in fact, sometimes leaves would curl inwards and edges would become brown. Here in this video, I have shared a very simple method of reviving a dying Calathea plant. In case, your plants are not healthy, then try this method once and I am 100% sure that it would work.

    THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
    I used this exact same mix on my dying Calathea and it came back to life! It’s flourishing and growing more than it was before. I have a north facing window and I live in CA so pretty good sun year round. I bought the sand (regular gardening sand) and vermicompost from a local plant store. I water about 1/wk. The plant completely died at first and I was skeptical but started to grow back in about 4 weeks and it hasn’t stopped since. Plz try this soil mix!

      You are most welcome and I am so glad to hear that, your dying Calathea is growing nicely :-) Like I informed in the video, I have tried many different ways and finally got this solution. It feel so great that it's working for others too (which was my real aim)
      Finally, THANK YOU so much for sharing your experience. Very soon, I am going to share how to grow healthy Calathea plants. The current temp in my place is quite high and it's 37°C [98.6°F]. Quite difficult to manage them in such climate. Still trying my best to keep them happy.

    Calathea is definitely the most troublesome plant I've owned so far! I found that they really do not like direct sunlight, or extreme cold. Mine is in a peat free compost that needs a slight replenish now, and it's recovering really well!

      Sorry for the late reply and thank you for your words! Totally agree with you..along with all other things, Humidity is really important and I am glad your plants are doing well, great job Indeed! I have tried that too (placing them in d bathroom)..but unfortunately, light in my bathroom is bit low. Plus, Humidity in my place is always high. Anyway, like I mentioned in the video, many Prayer plants and Calatheas died on my hand (sorry plants) and I am glad that now I can make them grow well. Very simple solution but I do agree that right environment is the most important thing.

    I can’t even believe this! I always naturally just assume that once a leaf shows ANY sign of distress that it’s a goner…and I cut it off. Boy have you proved that assumption wrong! I actually have 2 peacock Calatheas just like this and they’re doing very well, tho they need to be repotted. I cut several lower leaves off of one of them as they were getting all spotty - but new leaves are still growing. (I think the spots are due to too much moisture and needing to be reported) I thought Calatheas don’t like direct sun, and you proved that wrong as well! Also, my Calatheas came from Canada in only peat moss, and since they’re happy in it, I’m just going to keep using it. Thanks for this video!

    My Callathea has been a pain in the ass! It kept losing leaves but trying to grow new ones. The new leaves kept dying/shriveling/etc. It was in a pot too big for too long I think. Re potted it in a smaller pot but no matter what I freaking do it doesn't want to live. I only water it once a week. I was misting it, but now stopped. Now it has no leaves. Gonna give it 3 months to see what happens but then pitching it if it doesn't grow. I'm pretty done with this one. Will never get another again. I have a green thumb. I have between 40 and 45 plants and succulents and most are doing really good! I struggle with succulents because I tend to over water but getting better. Another plant that is impossible is the Zebra plant, also known as "tiger" plant. You learn which ones to stay away from over time. But overall it's very satisfying :)

    Did you cut off the browned leaves? I didn't think leaves lost the brown once they started browning. Did you cut the brown leaves off once new leaves started?
    And do you think this would work if a plant had all leaves die? My calathea had all leaves die off (after I accidentally left it in a position which got a really cold draft overnight when I forgot a door open in Winter) and one new shoot popped up from the roots a few weeks later. I've been too scared to repot it in case I kill off the one shoot that has emerged

Anyway, I mention the temp which is more important, not the season actually. It's because, I have many Subscribers from outside India..and whatever we grow here in Winter, those plants are grown either in Spring or in Summer over there. So, temp is the most important thing.
      Calatheas start to grow well from Spring onwards. But here in India, we face lots of issues as Summer Temp is quite high.

    What would you recommend as an alternate potting mix where I can water it less than daily? I have a Calathea ‘White Fusion’ and all the leaves turned brown and crispy. Thanks!

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  Год назад +2

      Sorry to say..very tough to provide other alternative! I have already tried many other potting soil and only this is the mix that is working well. All of my Calatheas are much healthy comparing to before. Summer temp is really high here and because of that, some leaved get burned. But, they are also producing new ones non-stop. Thank you!!

    I have about 20 calathea plants that I keep in the house. The winter is killing them! I keep it at 68degrees in my home, I have a grow light on them 12 hours a day and run a humidifier 12 hours a day. In the summer they are so big and full. Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong? Should I re-pot in the sand/compost mixture now? Also, what type of sand do you use? I am desperate to save my plants so any advice would be appreciated! Thank you for all of your wonderful videos!

      20..that's really great :-) You are not doing anything wrong..it's the dormancy time and so it's happening. Winter is not severe in my place and that's why, mine is okay even if it's December. Since in Summer, they become big and full, I am 100% sure that you are taking GOOD care of them. And, it would be also better to avoid repotting at this time as it's dormancy period. If they don't look good by Spring, then please try this. I use just normal construction sand (small crystal size).
      Hope it helps and thank you very much for your kind words, appreciated!

    Don't you like to use vermiculite to keep the moisture in? I had no idea you could use that amount of sand to drain. What about perlite?

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  2 месяца назад +1

      Vermiculite - a good idea. But, I have found this potting mix recipe after trying many other things including Perlite. So far, it's working the best! Watering daily would be enough as they prefer only bright light, no direct sun.

      Thank you for your inputs..yeah, they are really sensitive. You can use that too..but please make sure to keep the soil consistently moist. The edges of the leaves get burned if we allow the soil to dry out a bit. Wish you all the best!

    • @GardeningUpbeat
      @GardeningUpbeat  Год назад +8

      Well..I could have done that. But as I said in the video, they produce tubers. So, didn't want to hurt the plant too much (it's better to let the plant to manage old leaves. If we pull it or use any force, the tubers might get damaged). Anyway, it went through a shock as I removed all the old soil. No..it's not possible that dried leaves would turn green again. Thank you!

    • @magentamagenta1274

      Apparently leaves still photosynthesis when they are dying so they are still giving the plant energy. I used to cut off my dying leaves but have stopped this until the plants grow more leaves to replace the dying ones.
      I find that calathea don’t like being dry so check the soil regularly and misting or a humidifier helps.
