Very difficult song to cover only an artist with empathy and similar challenges can do this track. You guys did a very unique and honest cover. RESPECT 👍💪❤️
John Lennon was/ Is like Dad to me. He told me about the world. I've never been emotional when someone else does a John song. Until THIS! Good Lord. I wept like a baby. Thank you roots!
This song is so damn sad, if you know Lennon's story you can feel his pain in this song. And The Roots made it more emotional, my God I'm crying as fuck.
@@MeeMee-gz5vp and oddly enough he did the same to Julian but stayed at home to raise his 2nd son for 5 yrs and him and yoko have their pick of everything not Julian looks just like John
@@lindaaugone382 I agree, but if Julian was to lead a life of luxury, daddy had to go to work. Being a worldwide famous musician wasn’t exactly easy, which may be why John tried his best to compensate for time lost. Julian was born right at a time when the Beatles were at the top of their game. And by the time Sean was born, John was basically semi-retired as he wasn’t consistently required to be in the public eye and didn’t have to work as much, hence why John was more involved with raising Sean than with Julian. I think John was wrong for letting Yoko control the will though
I agree 100% with what you said. At that time you had to hide you were married. Julian said he had to buy some of his dad's stuff. He has said him and his brother also Yoko that hes on good terms with them now thanks for the reply!
I saw The Roots do this on the John Lennon anniversry special on T.V. a few years ago. Man. I was blown away on how talented these guys are. This comin from a die hard Beatles fan. The Roots are awesome.
This song has always been one of my favorite songs by John, and easily the most powerful and real. Arguably the most visceral song ever written. The Roots did this song proper justice, and the vocalist here is simply unbelievable. And this song can’t be the easiest to cover vocally, first because John’s voice and scream were inimitable, but because the feel of this song is so personal. Love it.
Just popped up on my feed, and I am grateful. I've been a fan of John Lennon's solo stuff for 40 years and The Roots did this song justice. My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 3 mos ago and she is slipping away fast. They call it the "long goodbye" and it's pretty effing painful.
Why are all the comments about the roots this rendition takes flight because Grammy award winning BALIL OLIVER covered this clip with deep rooted heart felt pain and emotion in front of that lame ass crowd he's a true artist in the industry !!!
I honestly love thos cover version more than johns original recording. But of course i love johns distinctive voice. A Wonderful performance by Bilal & the Roots!!! Wonderful!
I fell in love with the singer who did the powerful song mother I have never experienced such pure talent, heart, in an individual I don't know his name but I would buy any music he put out
The show "Better Things" brought me here as "Mother" is the intro music for it. Great show by the way, streaming on Hulu if you care. Anyway, Lennon's live version at MSG is amazing, and this is just as good in its own way.
This was Incredible. One of the best Beatles/Lennon covers I've ever heard...and as a hardcore John Lennon and Beatles fan, I've heard many a covers of them. The Roots are awesome. Well done.
DCAbsolutJohn1 it’s by John Lennon. It says Plastic Ono band as well but you think that bitch has any input on a song that actually has a melody and is pleasant to the ears!??? The answer is FUCK NO.
People here rippin' on the intro. If you haven't gotten used to a little rap by now, your intolerant and antiquated defiance against change in life and our current reality, it likely extends far beyond rap. "And you better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone". And those bashing the LEAD!? You must know nothing of supreme vocal control and ability. Excellent pitch and amazing power. With or without the intro, they fucking killed this.
Sounds good. I love it that this rap group has much respect for John and the Beatles. You can’t be a musician and not in some way idolize or respect the Beatles.
James A Wright, Jr. I won't lie, I was curious at first..the rap lyrics were a bit aggressive,I expected more resentment.. But then I heard that voice.. Then we all were in tears watching live
very good cover, damn them Roots are powerful, not many artists can cover Lennon like that
Yea they nailed it. Loved it.
Who is that guy singing Mother??very very moving.need .more of him!!
@@joyelliott7266 His name is Bilal. He's a brilliant artist.
So emotional...😢
I love when singers really put themselves in a song ..,, one of the best lennon's song cover I have heard.
Can we give bilal the credit he deserves!
nineties Baby Word, Bilal is a blue note. Some hit it, he seems to live there.
Yes ma'am! We were in tears watching this live!
Exactly. I listened to the Streisand, Bowie, and other covers on RUclips and Bilal kills them all.
Yes, thank you.
Hell to the yeah

I hear that shit cry everytime l play it.most bandmates were also
@1993 and you are not being much better than what you THINK john lennon was like by doing this kind of commentary
You need to read the Lord’s word. Idolize none, regardless of their talent.
@@joyelliott7266 HUH?

Me too. Me too.
So glad to see this comment here, albeit two years later. Lennon had one heck of a tough start (and end, too) in life, and this song sums it all up.

Patricia Alvarez Bill has been compared to Prince and D'Angelo, but he's got them both beat vocally speaking

I swear I heard John in that young man's voice. It was beautiful
John would have loved this.
Shivering ... The Roots ft. Bilal represent John Lenon at a very high level.

💯💯💯💯 ^^^THIS!!!! Say this shyt LOUDER!!!!!!!!!!
No bullshit lame af
Wasn't expecting to cry so hard.😪
Bilal's superb cover of John Lennon's "Mother" surpasses Bowie, et. al. Bilal should also cover Prince's "Purple Rain".
Luci Belarmino I was thinking the same thing. He would crush a Prince song. Purple Rain especially.
YES Luci. I totally agree. And I'm a Bowie fanatic! Here's to Bilal!
I honestly love thos cover version more than johns original recording. But of course i love johns distinctive voice. A Wonderful performance by Bilal & the Roots!!! Wonderful!
He actually covered a different song from the album in a tribute, “Beautiful Ones” and it was just as fantastic goddamnit lol
How am I just now finding about this? Amazing cover!
That was extremely touching and emotional. What an amazing rendition.
The greatest cover of a John Lennon song that I have ever heard. Broke my heart.

Pierre Stephens It’s by the Plastic Ono Band.
Killer bad so incredible who is that guy pray for more
It’s hard to do Lennon’s voice. His range was high and awkward in a good way. They sounded great.
DCAbsolutJohn1 it’s by John Lennon. It says Plastic Ono band as well but you think that bitch has any input on a song that actually has a melody and is pleasant to the ears!??? The answer is FUCK NO.
Wow. Normally I would say no one should do a John Lennon cover but that was pretty powerful. Great cover.
It's 8:42. Been playing back since 3:00. Never heard this version. John would be proud
Wow great job on covering. They really put the feeling of loss into this, simply passionate. Just terrific.
2:40 Ohh Gosh! Perfect version, really nice voice.
Congrats, Roots!
Cheers, World

They don't like a tribute to Lennon. Ppffft. Sucks for them then.
