- I feel like Afton doesn't really need an introduction considering how iconic he's become, both as a terrifying antagonist and as an everlasting shitpost. Lillard surprised me with how menacing he was despite being in the movie for 3 seconds, and I wish he was utilized more. Truth be told, Afton doesn't really have a theme until the final moments of the film, but some of the musical material alluding to him fits all the same. Very menacing atmospheric sounds, horror strings, and the inclusion of children whistling and singing. Once he reveals himself, we get his motif; a four note motif blaring on brass and choir. Nothing really unique or complex, but his theme does give him the presence and menace he needs in that final climax.

I am being honest, I really like this incarnation of William Afton. A lot of the original character was...vague, and relied very heavily on theories on what he was actually like. Not to mention his motives were confusing as hell. Here? Well, he's a sadistic sociopath who will kill just because he seems to enjoy it. He's just...terrifying.
To be fair, we don't know almost anything about him yet, this movie just set up everything to be explored in the sequels

Intelligent.
Sadistic.
Cruel.
Manipulative.
But there’s one more thing this variation added that brings it together.
William Afton… is prideful and pathetic.
The second the animatronics turned on him, he thought he could regain power over them simply through words by using the same methods that had once worked before, but to no avail.
He was so sure his plan would work so well, he never thought of a backup in the movie. So now with his schemes up in flames, he has nothing to fall back on.
Trying to make himself seem bigger than them, he belittled and mocked them. In the end, however, his words no longer sway them.
They can see him now…
…and he’s afraid.
Now it's time for him to become entirely manic, you know with immortality and what not
Uhh u're wrong tho, he *did* have a plan B in the end after he lost control over the animatronics. He intentionally put the Yellow Rabbit helmet when the springlocks activated and he literally said "i always come back". That means he knows that he'll possess the Yellow Rabbit suit and come back as Springtrap. If thats not a backup plan, idk wut is

It's like watching an adaptation of Mario Bros and calling Bowser "the dragon" because they'll reveal his name in the sequel and as such call him the dragon in movie

we were so happy in the cinema. i have always loved springtrap because he's terrifying. i was screaming the loudest!! and when he said his catchphrase, everyone was hollering like a drunken frat house party.

I was kinda erked at first when I saw the animatronics didn’t have the black eyes with the white dots for pupils but I was quickly surprised with how happy I was seeing them on Afton’s suit. Something about it made it a special kind of Sinister when he made the entrance.
I hope with all of my being they incorporate some of William's personality from the Silver Eyes into the sequel. Not the Twisted Ones or the Fourth Closet, just the original Silver Eyes. That book's version of William is terrifying.

I didnt know anything about whats in the movie, but when I first saw him I and couple other people really screamed loudly (sorry to others in cinema but I couldnt control it)
while I understand people may have wanted more of afton in the movie (me too), I think we all kind of forget the point of fnaf sometimes. In essence, fnaf is not about william, but rather it's about his victims and the lasting impact his horrifying actions have had on them. In the first three games, the main characters were the missing children. These were victims of afton's whom were damned to an existence of undeath, and are trying to free themselves. Hell, thematically the third game is not about afton or springtrap. It's about setting those children free. The fourth fifth and sixth game are not about william, but about his children. All of whom suffered at his hand, with the main character being his eldest son michael trying to set them all free.

They made an absolutely stunning theme song for Afton, yet Blumhouse didn’t even use HALF of it! I legit thought this was fan made at first but it’s not! It doesn’t even come across as being Afton’s theme based solely on what we seen of him, which was not nearly enough. What a waste. Another one of many reasons this movie was a letdown to say the least.
The movie was most certainly not a letdown. While I do think there were some things it could've done better I would definitely consider it a great adaptation of FNAF 1. While this movie could've certainly used William more, I think they are saving much of his character for the sequel where he's Springtrap.
@@skrappothemonster1436 well I certainly left the theatre disappointed. The problem with William was not just his underutilisation, it was the poor writing. There was poor writing in the movie as a whole. He needs more character development as William as well, not just as Springtrap. That being said, I don’t really trust Scott or Blumhouse in making the next movies considering how well this one did in terms of money and audience score, despite its poor quality. Two things that need to be done is Blumhouse listening to the critics and Scott not being involved at least as far as the screenplay. The man made great games but he really can’t write a movie and honestly stories in general.
@@dankster1156 I am sick and tired of people saying the movie had bad writing. I'll have you know William had excellent writing. At the very start of the movie we are introduced to the Yellow Rabbit, both with the camera panning to the drawing and with the 8-bit intro where he lures the kids to the backroom. Then we meet him as Steve Raglan, and we get a few weird interactions with him that make us suspicious of him. Then throughout the rest of the movie up, Blumhouse builds intrigue and suspense by constantly teasing the audience with more clues. Vanessa mentioning the missing kids, the constant references to a Yellow Rabbit, Vanessa acting scared and suspicious when Mike says he wants to ask the animatronics who took his brother. Eventually we the name drop of William Afton and get to see him in the Yellow Rabbit suit. Then finally, we get the see William's full reveal (which is done masterfully btw) and the finale commences. Willy beats up Mike, reveals himself to be Steve Raglan (confirming our suspicions), has a disagreement with Vanessa and ends up stabbing her, gets springlocked by the Cupcake, and gets dragged away. I really don't understand what else you guys want. Are you upset that we didn't get the whole backstory? Are you mad that he isn't characterized the way he is in the games or books? Is it just because of his screentime? William's writing was perfectly fine in this movie (except the implementation of the "I always come back" line, which could've been done way better) and I really don't get the distain for it.
Also, saying Scott isn't a good story teller is straight-up blasphemous.

So, William gave Mike a job at Freddy’s when he so obviously came to the conclusion Mike was the brother of one of his victims. Why would he do this knowing he’s the brother of a kid he killed way back, especially at a restaurant he owns and knows is haunted by the ghosts of other kids he murdered? Mike would never have figured out that he was his brother’s killer had he never been given the job in the first place. Perhaps William wanted to kill him in the establishment. If so, why doesn’t he kill him on the first night? What stopped him from getting one of the killer animatronics, he apparently controls, to tear him apart? Why did he wait until the fifth night to show up in person and kill Mike himself when he could have done so long ago. If he was so worried Mike would discover the truth so bad you’d think he would have. Maybe it was Abby he wanted to kill? He is a child serial killer after all. But no. He had absolutely no idea Abby even existed until he showed up at the pizzeria himself. The ghost kids told Afton of her existence when he got there? Ok. He then fights with and stabs his daughter because she didn’t follow his directive with Mike which was to “keep him in the dark” and “kill him if he got too close.” Why even hire Mike, the brother of a kid he murdered in the past, to watch over the place if he had Vanessa and the killer animatronics to do that for him? Why take such a risk in hiring Mike when he didn’t even need him. Sure he sends Vanessa to mislead him, but she does the exact opposite of that and is the literal reason Mike discovers the truth (which he is seemingly incapable of doing so on his own without relying on someone else to reveal and explain it to him word for word anyway). Even after hiring Mike the place is broke into anyway during the goddamn daytime.
That all aside, you said “Blumhouse builds intrigue and suspense by constantly teasing the audience with more clues.” The “clues” themselves may not have been bad, but Mike barely picks up on these clues and the ones he does he never truly discovers on his own. There’s that and also the fact he comes to the conclusions so nonchalantly, for example when he blatantly discovers the kids are ghosts just by asking Abby. How Abby even got into contact with them before even knowing about or entering the pizzeria I don’t understand. Then there’s the whole asking Abby to ask them or him asking them himself who took Garrett. Vanessa was “acting sacred and suspicious” when he said he’d do this, yet is seemingly not so when he says he knows they are possessed and even gives the go ahead for Abby to play with them despite Mike’s protest. Don’t even get me started on that fort building scene with the pop music. Then after all that she has the audacity to blame Mike for bringing her there and straight up threaten to shoot him over it. Let’s not forget how the whole asking them who took Garrett thing never actually materialised after that. Vanessa herself is the worst written character in the entire movie but I’ll not get into all that.
The actual name drop of William Afton and everything else with it felt completely out of the blue. It felt like something before it all was absent. I can’t quite explain it but that’s how I felt. As for the information that was provided itself, there was much just spelled out to us and Mike at once. Like I said it was just out of the blue kind of and once again Mike was relying on Vanessa to uncover the truth.
As for William’s reveal, you said it was done masterfully. Masterfully? Was it really? Sure yeah the way he comes out of the darkness with the suit on and the voice changer was cool and all, but it felt so random. He was just standing there waiting to come out or just arrived shortly after Vanessa with the suit on like that at that particular time? I don’t know. What I do know is that the finale is so bad and disappointing. For some reason the animatronics “wake up” just by William commanding them to despite being neutralised by electricity (far too easily I may add). Mike just comes to the conclusion he’s controlling them through the drawing on the wall. Are we seriously expected to believe a mere kids drawing was the driving force for the animatronics the whole time? And somehow that same drawing is sufficient to deceive the ghost kids into believing their literal killer, whom they all witnessed murder them and is responsible for their suffering…..is their friend? Kids can be stupid but they aren’t THAT stupid. Then all it takes to undo everything and defeat Afton was for Abby to quickly draw a new picture, this time portraying him kill the kids and replacing the other one with it. Afton just stands there and watches her put it up, essentially going “don’t you put that up, don’t you dare put that up…..she put it up”. He then “gets springlocked by the cupcake” after it biting a chunk out of his suit. What!? This man was electrocuted and tanked a bullet, yet all it took to trigger the failure was that? The whole “gets springlocked by the cupcake” statement alone sounds ludicrous! It was ludicrous! There was all this buildup creating intrigue and suspense about this man according to you, yet he loses control of the situation and is defeated so easily within minutes!
“We” are upset that William was written badly, had next to no screen time and any build up for him that was created was destroyed almost immediately and made redundant to say the least. He is such a good and crucial character yet that’s all we got? The way they adapted from the source material and what they decided to adapt in general was bad. You cannot sit there and tell me the writing was excellent or perfectly fine when it is so obviously flawed! At least you admit the always come back line could’ve been done better. There is distain for it because it literally doesn’t make sense. It implies he came back from something. What did he come back from? It certainly wasn’t death. The use of the line might as well sum up what’s wrong with the movie. Made to please, not to make an actual good narrative. To make money. I could write for hours on why this movie was so terrible. I already have wrote an entire essay on William Afton alone. I’ll end it here.
