- In this How to Cut & Style, Uppercut Deluxe Barber Ambassador Ron Talley, takes us through the Military Flat Top.
Ron, co-owner of Electric Barbershop in Riverside CA is a master of precise cuts, with particular speciality in skin fades.
This cut takes extreme attention to detail. You need to ensure the top is indeed flat and even across the top with no stray hairs. It’s important to understand and consider the shape of the client’s skull. Ensuring the shape of the hair follows the natural curve of the skull.
This is no easy cut, but with the help of this video, and a lot of practise, you’ll be on your way to nailing the Military Flat Top.

I have had this exact military flattop since 1993. My wife hates it, but I still wear it. I also only use Uppercut Deluxe because it’s the only thing that can maintain my flattop. That stuff is gold! Never considered the Featherweight though.

This is definitely one of the best flattops I’ve ever seen. His hair color and the way it grows is definitely a plus!
I had one for several years as a youth in the 50’s and 60’s. I never liked the look of an all-over buzzcut back then but I did enjoy the short hair. I have wavy hair and it never was the best for the cut. I didn’t like the butch wax or the way it looked with it. Still I liked getting the cut and having a landing strip!
Now I’m bald and first buzzed, then shaved my head. I love the feel and look of bald, buzzed, or flattop!

I've seen some great flat tops in my time but this one must be in the top three. The young fellow is very lucky that he not only has strong hair but it grows in the correct direction and has no annoying cowlicks to upset the balance.

My favorite cut had it back in the 60s in high school. I stray away occasionally let it grow put but always return to this through the military it was right on I just like short easy to manage hair.

Miss my flattop. Been growing my hair out on my wife’s request, that and a bi weekly haircut has gotten expensive! $20 with tip is now $30+ with a tip! So tempted to jump back in the chair! Always had my landing strip skin tight but was always tempted to do a bald fade. Would a bald fade be at the first apex or further down?

So hard in Australia to find barbers who can cut a flat top. I went to one of a number and they were terrible. One asked me what's a flat top cos I've never done one and I had to guide him along.

Marines with this hairstyle have get a fresh cut every weak so how do they do it?
Hair should slope from front to back , this appears to be the other way round I’ve been cutting this style for over 20 years , and it would be easier using a Brian drumm flattopper less time consuming .

Everyone around town has that same boring mid fade that dips down mid-ear level in the back but it's a well defined and chiseled high skin fade that makes them ladies stare. Brothers will be staring at you too.

This is a bald eagle flattop. It's meant to cover a mens baldspot in the back by making it a part of the fade.

Hi Suzzane, On the sides, Ron starts with a 000 Blade to set a guide and then works through 0A blade, 1 blade, 1A blade, 1.5 clip and 2 clip. On top he uses a 1 Blade to set a guide, then swaps to a 000 blade using clipper over comb.
Barber student here. I’ve only done normal flat tops. Is shaving the horseshoe section down like that supposed to serve any purpose?

That’s a very time consuming way of doing a flat top and I cant imagine that’s how they did it in the army.
Gordon Simpson, the army would do a buzz cut which is a much faster, less precise version of a flat top.

I think you’re totally right there’s more time going into the blending but I think that’s normal when you’re going for a my stylized version of a military inspired haircut.

Its called a garbage barber/stylist...if he had any skill it would be 00000 straight up off the round of the head and then clipper over comb for the rest.
