  • In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset” I take a walk around Stonebarrow Hill & Golden Cap - located between Bridport & Lyme Regis on the Western edge of Dorset on the Jurassic Coast. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    I start my 5.5 mile circular walk at the National Trust car park on Stonebarrow Hill & initially head in a North Easterly direction to Chardown Hill. Just before I reach Morecombelake, I head South passing by the historic St Wites Well.
    My route then takes me to the location of what was once a Saxon village at Stanton St Gabriel (long since abandoned). Little remains of the village. The old manor house is now 4 holiday cottages run by the National Trust and St Gabriels chapel is just a ruin.
    I then climb up Golden Cap - at 627 feet above sea level, it is the highest point on the South Coast of England. The views from the top are amazing and with the weather being so good (sunshine & blue skies), the sea was looking quite magical.
    My descent from Golden Cap takes me Westwards along the South West Coast Path until I reach Westhay Farm at which point I head inland & uphill back to the car park at Stonebarrow Hill.
    NB: There was a fairly strong wind whilst I was filming which has had an affect on the quality of the audio in this video (I was in a very exposed area for most of the time). I hope that this does not spoil your enjoyment of watching the clips.

    Great walk as ever Dave. I understand St Wite's well is actually only run-off from the hill, not an actual spring. So probably just as well you and Logan weren't tempted! John

    Beautiful scenery and views. What lovely weather you had for that walk. Have walked up to the top of Golden Cap but only from the car park below! Visited Stonebarrow a couple of times too, but the narrow road up is a bit scary, especially when we are in our van!

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  Год назад +1

      Yes, the lane up to the National Trust car park at Stonebarrow is quite narrow with not many passing places.

    I’ve never walked up Golden Cap, but my sister and brother in law, who live in Lyme, have often done it. The views were magnificent, aided very much by the cloud formations. You certainly picked the right day. Good light and very little wind. I doubt if the views are quite as green today! Congratulations on a fine video.

    Wow. Nice work Mr Logan, spectacular cinematography, yer mate Dave's Gopro seems to work quite well... I'm still thinking of saving up for an SLR type thingy, but what would I know? Have a crunch on some dry toast, you'll love it. Thank you both.

      Thank you. I am quite pleased with the Gopro 10 now - the image stabilization is so good that you don't need a gimbal & the picture quality is fine (although it is no good in poor light!). I am thinking of investing in a camcorder that is good in low light so that I can take decent footage when I am filming inside (usually a church which normally not that well lit).

    Another fantastic video of well researched history and beautiful countryside with an added sprinkling of Logan moments! I loved how seriously Logan was listening to your tale at St Gabriel's Chapel! Somewhere near Chardown Hill is a path intriguingly named the Smuggler's path - did you come across that on your return route? Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable video!!

    • @DaveFord

      Thanks Jean. No, I don't think that I spotted the Smuggler's Path - it certainly is an area steeped in "Smuggling history"!

    Thanks Dave - lovely video. I was in beautiful Dorset last week and managed to walk up Colmers Hill . Not as high as Golden Cap but still lovely views. Also walked some of Hell Lane, but ran out of time so couldn't do all of it. Do you have any plans to walk there in the future?

      Thanks Angela. I shall look to add Colmers Hill / Hell Lane to my list of walks for next year! Thank you for the recommendation.
