Tony Allen, who was a very good friend of Ginger, has just passed away, and they're now together in heaven, high in the sky, playing the drums forever. R I P Ginger & Tony.
Wow, this is amazing.Actually the guy playing the bass wearing the red tank is none other than famous Nigerian jazz artiste Tunde Kuboye, and he wrote that song that's being performed. I noticed his name wasn't in the credits at the beginning of the video. Anyhow the song is called 'Coming back home'. After this video was shot, the band 'Ginger Baker & Salt' was formed and they toured the 10 German cities & 30 US & Canadian cities. They also performed at the '72 Olympics Jazz Festival Munich
Here's the answer for you straight from the great JONI HAASTRUP, who played that keyboard-- "Thanks for your question regarding the keyboard that I was playing on that video with Ginger and my band. That was a Farfisa organ that I was playing back then but thank you for asking. That was such a long time ago, I had to think hard about it, my goodness, that was almost 40 years ago!!!" Thanks Joni!
This is Ginger in his primal element, God bless him. He's an artist BEYOND description; he can't be pigeon-holed by the critics. He just does his OWN thing, and he does it BEAUTIFULLY.
Jude the Obscure word! He was kind of an asshole to elvin Jones calling him out and saying he’s past his prime... but he just speaks his mind gotta respect that
Fantastic! Killer organ, groovy girl vocals, thunderous bass, wild congas, eerie horns, and well, Ginger on drums!!! this shows one more time that music's the best!
Really puts Ginger's style and African influences in context - this group just got what sounds like 4-6 other African "One role" percussionists hitting everything hard as all hell
Imagine the job he could do with santana at that time!He proves that youcan be a good musician without the big technique!Specially for the drums where the technique is still based on military drumming!
The new version of that cd has an awesome(I don't use that word often) duet with Tony Allen on percussion and G on drums. African Force is also outstanding.
zookat: Thanks so much for getting the keyboard answer for me.....and from the person who actually played it! Holy crap, how awesome!!!!! Thank you so much. I have so many questions that I could ask her about the band, Ginger, etc. Thank you so much.....it totally made my day!
Great solo! By the way, Ginger Baker LIVES in Africa now and, although much older, is looking much more healthy after many years of clean living. He is semi- retired, but, even at over 70 he still gets behind the kit sometimes and, no, he hasn't lost it. Right here on RUclips are many videos that have been taken in the past few years. Type in "Ginger Baker Wrapping Paper" for his recent opinion of one of Cream's poppier songs.
Ginger is so unbelieveably awesome, as is the rest of this band. I LOVE the sound of that keyboard, starting especially at 1:45. Damn. Can someone tell me what kind it is, and how they get that tone? Is it a Rhodes? Or what?
DVD Ginger Baker in Africa. Ginger and soundman made/director made this . They only had a Nagra tape recorder which is for film dialogue not music. See cd Africa '70 with Ginger Baker. Band is Fela Ransom- Kuti. Also Ginger Baker Air Force.
@phoenix, You really know about Ginger's life and death? Then do you think the man living in Africa as Ginger Baker, who is 71 and still an exellent drummer is an imposter? Interesting... I think he's the real Ginger Baker, and he is living a nice long life. Long live Ginger Baker.
They're so cooped up that they seem to be playing out from a sardine box. Great vibes though, Baker jamming to Afro break-neck speed tempos - brilliant!
Imagine Clapton soloing over this, Cream-era style. Kinda like what Cream would have been if they had succeeded in luring Steve Winwood away from Traffic.
@zookat I think he still might live there. Rolling Stones did an article on him maybe a year or two ago, and at the time he was still livng there with his African wife.
Tony Allen, who was a very good friend of Ginger, has just passed away, and they're now together in heaven, high in the sky, playing the drums forever. R I P Ginger & Tony.
With fela kuti with them

This is the best thing I’ve heard Ginger Baker on.
and i just be learning Ginger's collab with Fella. damn, love the rhythms and jam.
This is Ginger in his primal element, God bless him. He's an artist BEYOND description; he can't be pigeon-holed by the critics. He just does his OWN thing, and he does it BEAUTIFULLY.
Right on, he's a force of nature.
Jude the Obscure yeah man
Yup
Jude the Obscure word! He was kind of an asshole to elvin Jones calling him out and saying he’s past his prime... but he just speaks his mind gotta respect that
The only drummer i love more is vinnie colaiuta
Fantastic! Killer organ, groovy girl vocals, thunderous bass, wild congas, eerie horns, and well, Ginger on drums!!! this shows one more time that music's the best!
Ginger Baker in Africa. It's a great DVD. I highly reccomend it.
I USED TO SEE IT ON RUclips ...NOW I CANT FIND IT ....
Ginger was the highest he had ever been without anything except jamming with the people he loved the most! Africans!
Can only imagine what this sounded like in the room. Loud AF.
can anybody picture Keith moon playing there? he probably smash everything.
RIP Ginger Baker, LEGEND
One of the greatest jams i've ever seen!
Really puts Ginger's style and African influences in context - this group just got what sounds like 4-6 other African "One role" percussionists hitting everything hard as all hell

Great Jam! Those drum rhythm’s hit in the deep part of the primal brain. It’s a free trip for those involved.
Afro-psychedelia with guest Ginger Baker -- a great combination of musical talent. Thanks Zookat for posting this excellent footage.
My uncle, Dinky Flange was in there, jamming too. He was on the viola, my brothers !
Imagine the job he could do with santana at that time!He proves that youcan be a good musician without the big technique!Specially for the drums where the technique is still based on military drumming!
What a mean groove are they laying down.
Ginger Baker is a fucking prodigy
That room must've been LOUD
grande Ginger un grande, nadie le iguala o supera
The new version of that cd has an awesome(I don't use that word often) duet with Tony Allen on percussion and G on drums. African Force is also outstanding.

I love EVERTHING about the Ginger Baker/Salt sessions EXCEPT the guitar work!
Ginger is so unbelieveably awesome, as is the rest of this band.
I LOVE the sound of that keyboard, starting especially at 1:45. Damn.
Can someone tell me what kind it is, and how they get that tone? Is it a Rhodes? Or what?
I will ask Joni Haastrup when I visit him next in Oakland CA.
This is from the DVD, "Ginger Baker In Africa"

A Merry Xmas and the very best for you and yours in the coming years!
anjeldrops, thanks for providing additional information about this footage. Oh yes, I remember Kuboye.
Btw, Johnny Haastrup now resides Calif.
In fact they were all SO high, that when the organs come playing along, I get THIS high by merely listening this stuff.
Fela featured on trumpet on the album...it was Baker who hired Joni
Check out that vintage Marshall in the background!!!
It was new in them days.
One of the first things i noticed too
God that is f***'ng incredible! Bird Lives.
Totally different league of knowledge ginger has, amazing!! Keith who? John what?
Banging jam

How has Ginger kept from burning a hole in his snare head all these years? Even with emphysema he still chains 3 packets a day.
gy4b70 i know man.. must be that fire in him thats there anyway ! ;)
Outstanding
@kaloyansa It's definitely Joni Haastrup - before this he played with Baker on keys for 'Ginger Baker's Airforce'.
8.30 tee mac wow it is good to live long
I know he made a record with Fela Kuti, who's a famous Nigerian musician. But you probably knew that.
Descanse en paz este genio de la bateria
And a jazz drummer IN Cream too! Don't tell Ginger you think he's a Rock drummer...haha!
Awesome..
Phenomenal.
R.I.P
awesome
Ginger revealed Fela Kuti on this trip - the "Bob Marley" of Africa. Introduced the world to "Afro funk".
@uptownrocker right on thanks bro
Worlds.Best.Keyboard.Sound.
ONE OF MY IDOLS... I WISHD ID WAS LIKE FINNISH GINGER BAKER. JIM CAPALDI OR RINGO STARR
They're so cooped up that they seem to be playing out from a sardine box. Great vibes though, Baker jamming to Afro break-neck speed tempos - brilliant!
Super Sonic Sound,
I think this is what music is all about.Someone enlighten me.WHY didn't Ginger give Eric a ring during these sessions?
Nice organ sound
Born under drums
Imagine Clapton soloing over this, Cream-era style. Kinda like what Cream would have been if they had succeeded in luring Steve Winwood away from Traffic.
@greenfruitface ginger is still gnarled, cranky and living in south africa
What is the official title of this film/documentary? was it ever fully released? love to see the whole thing, seen many clips. Thanks man
Yes...its on DVD if you look online...director is tony palmer.
@@minorsnow5306 Ah thanks very much.
KILLER!
@zookat I think he still might live there. Rolling Stones did an article on him maybe a year or two ago, and at the time he was still livng there with his African wife.
chido mi rey tan cañones
sorry but this is amazing. bearing in mind he was a jazz drummer before cream i guess he fits in real well
This RockS! Ginger is so high!^^
Quelle jam session ! C'est magnifique.
@zookat & @greenfruitface : the organ is a Welson/Halifax duo, close to a Farfisa
Heavy Bebop influence in the horns.
It's like Dizzy, Miles, and Bird on acid.
Yes, Ginger did move to South Africa, but I am not sure if he still lives there.
High enough to connect with Africa properly, at a primal level? Pretty high, then.
LOOOL who the heck is saying "woops" at 2:51- 2:53?
For what it's worth, I think the late Rick Wright (of Pink Floyd) played Farfisa organs, early on...
Stoned again.
