Not my all time favorite book but probably one of the most definitive of my life…I read “Across Five Aprils” in the 7th grade, became a Civil War buff from that day forward which led me to getting my B.A. in history. I worked at a world famous research library in their special collections reading room for a number of years before doing a career pivot to nursing but I am still a lover of history. I wouldn’t be the same person without reading that book over thirty years ago.

When I walked-on to Baylor's Cross Country and Track team in the fall of '83, I knew I could do that, but I never filled out forms nor was I told if I made the team or not. I traveled one time, and just kept coming to work-outs for three years. Then my major required me to be in class during work-out times, so I just walked off my fourth year. I enjoyed my time doing that and never stopped running.

    1) Jonathon Livingston Seagull by my friend, Richard Bach. why? No limitations.
    2) The Zen Of Running by Fred Rohe. why? Simple and powerful and as a Zen student, it combined two of my earliest passions.
    3) Running & Being by Dr. George Sheehan. why? it gave DEPTH and DIMENSION and PHILOSOPHICAL GROUNDING to the outer action of just 'running'...it made Running a spiritual vehicle for young ilg.

I am always cognizant of the work that you and others are n RUclips put in every day. Not quite 4 years ago a friend of mine suffered a catastrophic illness which she is still working to recover from. We live several hundreds miles away from each other so on a practical basis there was nothing I could do to help out her and her family. I decided to do about the only thing I could do to possibly provide to her a brief moment each day to take her out of her current circumstances: I started sending her each day a photo that I had taken. A simple task but also at times difficult as I strive to make each picture that I send interesting in some way. This is a fraction of the effort that you put in each day and my thanks to you for doing so.

Where running intersects with life: progress is made by stacking solid, not spectacular, runs. In life, if you work to the point of exhaustion every day, you burn out. It’s unsustainable. BUT, if you put in solid effort day in and day out, leaving room for recovery and balance, you’ll find yourself getting better and better. At work, at running, at life.

As a running librarian/philosopher, I loved today's entry. Read good books? Yes,yes, yes! Three of the best books I've read recently are: 1. Dare to Lead; 2. Joy at Work; and 3. Atomic Habits. The three of them tie in with the sign-off very well, actually. Other books in the comments are well worth reading too. And, if you need further book recommendations, please ask your local librarian. (We love it when that happens!)

@@SethJamesDeMoor The author talks about building positive habits incrementally, in a doable way. It's a very individual approach that can easily be applied to activities like long term things like meditation or running. It doesn't hurt that the book was readable - professional development that I actually enjoyed. The Thursday newsletter from the author is thought provoking (in a good way) too.

QOD: On the slightly facetious side, I read Little Men when I was in high school, and its incredibly idealistic story of a near-utopian boarding school inspired me to think I too wanted a family of 10 boys and 1 girl, just like Jo. Now I'm a homeschool mom to 5 boys and 1 girl: close enough!!! Far from utopia around here, but it's been (and continues to be) a wonderful and amazing journey!
The book that has influenced my life in every area, and I do mean every area, is the Bible: I try to read it all the way through every year, and actually have for more than 35 years now (Wow! That's actually kind of stunning when I do the math: I don't feel old enough for that to be true! 🤣).

College Professor: my recommendation is a classic... 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius. This cornerstone Stoicism work changed my life; how I view myself; how I view others, and how I react to the difficult situations I face. People try to control many aspects of uncontrollable life; however, all we can really do is control how we react when 'stuff' happens. It's a great book for all people... especially runners : )

QD: I'm an IT professional, I do end user and network support. Really wasn't any books that led me to want to work with computers. I think it was mostly wanting to play computer games back in the 80s and 90s. And back in the 80s and early 90s you had to figure it out yourself how to get those computer games to run.... And it just kind of snowballed from there. I didn't want to work in factories like my parents did. Grandpa paid for me to go to college so I wouldn't have to get dirty for a living. And that's how it's been for over 20 years working with computers. Still trying to advance my career right now to do more network and system support.

I would have to say "Extreme Ownership" by Jocko Willink. He opened my eyes to what it means to take control of my life, and to stop letting obstacles, big and small, hold me back. Life is hard, but that is no reason to quit.
"Atomic Habits" by James Clear. He gives you a roadmap to small successes leading to life changing habits
"Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. What Louis Zamperini was able to accomplish in one lifetime is more than most of us could go through in two. And then to be able to find forgiveness for someone who tormented him 24 hours a day, thousands of miles away, years after the events?? PHEW! That is amazing.

Another great vlog, Seth. And today's comment section is definitely worth the read. Two things that come to mind are DISCIPLINE and gratefulness. To get to where you are (and to stay there) takes tremendous self discipline, which as a young person might seem antithetical to, as you put it, "freedom". But realizing when you've "arrived" and appreciating the process are also super important. It's so easy to focus on what we don't have (Bentleys ) and not be grateful for the many blessings in our lives.
