  • Rodenstein Castle was built by the brothers Rudolf and Friedrich von Crumbach in the mid-13th century. The derivation of the name is disputed - it may come from red sandstone, of which there was quite a bit as opposed to the granite rocks in the region, but it has also been suggested that it derives from the extensive clearing that was necessary in order to contain the site to shape their surroundings. After moving into the castle, the noble family called themselves "von Rodenstein".
The castle has been rebuilt and expanded several times. Unfortunately, there are no views of the early versions. The first drawing by Valentin Wagner from 1634 is the basis of several models that tried to depict the castle to the viewer in a plastic way.
The last resident, Adam von Rodenstein, died with his family from the plague in 1635 during the Thirty Years' War. The castle is said to have been in good condition as late as 1640. However, when the last Rodensteiner, Georg Friedrich, returned from a long stay in France in 1650, he found it uninhabitable and took an apartment in Heppenheim. As a result, building material was broken away from the castle and used elsewhere, e.g. in the castle Pretlack in Fränkisch-Crumbach, as well as the Dornmühle and farmsteads in the area. In the 1980s, the Odenwald Club saved the ruins from further decay by carrying out security work. Between 1961 and 1989 it was restored several times with funds from the state, the district and the municipality of Fränkisch-Crumbach.
