Crazy that each and every one of those little bones represent a person who lived a life, who laughed, cried, wanted, and loved. Really makes you think about how small our existence really is, because when it's over, you're just another addition to the pile of bones.

    Culture differences:
    1. American discovering abandoned catacombs: "Did you see that?" "I heard voices!" "It got colder right here!" "I feel an uneasy presence!!" "I'm getting out of here!!!"
    2. French discovering abandoned catacombs: History lessons.
It's also so awesomely French that they put up a grave for Philibert Aspairt.. who died down there looking for treasure - which was bottles of liquor.

I once went out with an engineer whose job it was to strengthen the walls of the St Martin Canals in Paris. He was supposed to fill in with concrete the hollows surrounding the canals and he told me that they found many huge rooms, even furnished with chandeliers etc where people had lived from the 19 th century onwards. His job was to block them and fill them in ! So sad but there are hundreds of miles of underground tunnels in Paris with many rooms.

Interesting historical facts and research, plus the guide was really chill and down to earth. I’ve only been to the legal part of the catacombs and it’s amazing... in no way we felt any sort of ‘presence’ or energy like other videos claim... I guess it’s the darkness and silence that can mess with your head.

    Great video:
    - No exaggerated horror music / sound effects / heavy video editing just to make things scary.
    - Great cameraman & edit (scenes are always shooting the guide walking towards the camera) instead of shooting the persons butt in front of them & keep yelling hurry up!
    - The guide was exceptional, great historian, simple explanation & very calm. He chooses to sit & explain. Unlike some videos, they become breathless while they walk & talk.
    - The short cuts thru the main holes was a treat, because almost every catacomb videos features too much on the railway entrance, the graffiti & especially the pile of bones / skulls.
    - Kudos to the guide again when he fixes the main hole while exiting. Although it's illegal to enter the catacombs but this shows how he cares & respect.
    - Lastly, when the guide lights up an oil lamp, you know this guy is the real deal.
    Thanks for reading.
    Regards from Malaysia.

It's actually a carbide lamp, commonly used by miners in the past. The pellets he filled the bottom with are calcium carbide (CaC2) and he filled the top reservoir with water. A controlled drip of water falls onto the calcium carbide, producing acetylene gas (C2H2) which is flammable.
Agree, great video. I love that he has all the appropriate equipment, wears rubber boots, old pants, but also his fancy watch XD

Some rooms and passageways are pretty precarious so if your guide tells you to not fuck around, * you dont fuck around *

    • @SheldonLudlow
      @SheldonLudlow 8 лет назад +11

*****, i've never done anything like this so I can't really relate, but it still seems like there wouldn't be much air flow down there, especially because they keep blocking off access points. I'm not saying you're wrong, however, because I have nothing to compare it to.

+SheldonLudlow their isn't anything to limit the flow of gases. The air gets thin usually at really high altitudes where the molecules are far apart. The only reason you probably get that instinctual thought about the air being thin down underground is because we naturally associate being deep underground with an inability to breath, because pressure is exerted on our lungs.

In the end bones are just bones...
