    I appreciate learning your last tip of the bind off.

    Love this pattern and use it a lot.
    The double gradient is beautiful!
    FYI I prefer a stretchy bind off because it keeps all three sides equal.
    My favorite bind off is k2tog, slip that stitch back onto the left needle then k2tog, and repeat.

    • @ruthcline5465
      @ruthcline5465 3 года назад +3

      I forgot to include k2tog tbl in the easy, stretchy bind off.
      K2 together through the back loop, slip that stitch back on to the left needle then repeat k2togtbl.

    - Great! I’m not so good at knitting, but I want to make this shawl. Just have to get some yarn for it, plus a set of knitting needles. I usually crochet. I didn’t knit or crochet for about 25 years, started again some years ago. So much has happened with krocheting and knitting in these years! And RUclips tutorials are so great to watch and then make the project. I’m in Heaven... 😃

    I have just completed my second of this pattern. Thank you for the tutorial on this technique of increasing and decreasing for the shape to be achieved. I used Lion Brand Landscapes on the first in two contrasting color blends...Volcano (rich deep reds/purples/rust/blues) and Blue Lagoon (deep rich blues/greens). The yarn in those colors created a really artsy piece in gorgeous bright colors that I always steer away from in my wardrobe. The Shawl will bring in a hyper-dose of color to my winter outfits. The bind off was too tight even though I really was conscious of my tension while binding off. My completed length was approx 70 inches using the two skeins in totality on us 8 needles.
    The second that I just finished now, I chose a different take on yarn colors and tried a different bind off. I selected two cakes from my treasured stash of Caron Latte Cakes in the Blueberry colorway on size 13 needles. I made certain to select two cakes that began with different shades in the variations of blues. What it created was a very tonal version that is quite pleasing to the eye and more subdued for days when one feels less adventuresome with colors. I used 80 grams from each cake (approx 176 yards x 2), leaving enough for two more scarves from those cakes. It left me with 84 inches along the top so it is very generous and fluffy. I might even try this once more with even larger needles for something even larger and more airy to be able to wrap it several times for the coldest days.
    I recommend the bind off I used on the second one...no tightness at all...as stretchy as the rest of the garter stitch scarf/shawl. I began my cast off row by knitting first stitch and second stitch. With 2 stitches on my right needle I knit those 2 stitches through the back loop by inserting my left needle in front of right needle from left to right, and complete knit stitch. Knit the next stitch from the left needle and knit through the back loop again on the 2 stitches on the right needle. To give credit where due, I learned this bind off technique from Very Pink here on YT. I believe her tutorial title is Very Stretchy Bind Off. It worked very well for this application.
    Thanks again, this is an easy to use pattern when one needs to be able to knit on “cruise control”. I will keep it my “go to” projects.

    Your color choices in this shawl turned out so beautiful. I would never have expected that and honestly probably would have never chosen those two to go together in a project. This video in particular, specifically your colorway choices in this project, came to mind recently when I was choosing yarn for an afghan I'm making soon. I was a bit more daring than I normally would have been. Medium smoke grey, plum variegated, and butter yellow yarn ended up in my cart and I'm so excited to get started on this. Thanks for your inspiration in being a bit more adventurous with my color choices.

      Hi Bonnie. The decreases are part of the shawl rows all along. The combination of increases and decreases is what causes the shape of the shawl to curve. Perhaps the written instructions might help: yayforyarn.com/double-gradient-boomerang-shawl-free-knitting-pattern/

      Hi! I love to knit because I just like to be creative. With knitting, I can play with color, texture, style, and squishy yarn! Knitting is just one of the creative outlets I enjoy. I also love crocheting, sewing, baking, doodling, and quilting. (Especially free-motion quilting!) I have also dabbled in cross stitch, embroidery, sculpting polymer clay, paper-crafting, and jewelry-making. I find anything crafty or creative to be relaxing and fun, and I love any opportunity to make something unique!

    In reference to the "gap" i mentioned in my last comment, I've tried leaving the old color hanging off to the right and just knittig with the new color. The "gap" is then in the back, and less visible.
    Does this make sense??

  • @mortiscia
    @mortiscia 6 лет назад

    I am also wondering about the number of stitches you ended up with? The reason is that I want to start at the other end instead so it would be good to know approximately how many I might need to start with :) Great tut and wonderful colours!

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  6 лет назад +2

      Hi! I finished with about 150 stitches, and my bind-off edge measured about 40" long. This will vary greatly, depending on the thickness of the yarn you are using and your gauge. I would suggest casting on an odd number of stitches until your cast-on edge is about 40" long, instead of going by the exact number of stitches I had. I would not recommend working this backwards unless you are sure you have more than enough yarn, though. Mine was started at the small end, and worked until I was just about out of yarn. If you start at the large end and work towards the small end, and you don't have extra yarn just in case, you could run out of yarn before you make it down to the small tip of the shawl. Hope this helps!

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  6 лет назад

      P.S. You will also have to swap out the increases for decreases and swap out the decreases for increases.

    • @mortiscia
      @mortiscia 6 лет назад

      Thanks a lot for your replies ad the tips! :) I think there's a possibility to start at the big end if one changes the pattern a bit, say have a large section of one colour, then a big one with stripes and so on and ofc use matching colours. I have so much yarn at home lol! Have a great day!

Please could you explain how this happens. I'm looking forward to knitting it, I have the yarn but just need your or anyone's help, please.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  2 года назад

      Hi Marie. If you look at the photo in this post of the shawl laying flat, yayforyarn.com/double-gradient-boomerang-shawl-free-knitting-pattern/ you can see the direction the stripes go. The stripes make it easier to see how the shawl is constructed. The cast on corner is at the right, and the bind off edge is the edge that runs from the center point of the shawl to the left corner. I hope this helps!

    Hi!! Am new to knitting. Do I need 2 different colors to make this project or can I use only 2 skeins of the same color? Thanks love your tutorial.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Rosita! You can do this with 2 skeins of the same color. However, to make sure you don't end up with the same colors overlapping, I would suggest using the center-pull end of one skein and the outside end of the second skein. So you would start with the first color of one skein and the last color of the second skein. This would give a similar look as if you were using two colorways. Otherwise, if you begin with the same end of both skeins, you won't get the double-gradient effect. You will just get sections of solid colors as if you were only using one skein. Hope this helps!

    beautiful work! I love the look of the stripes, but how do you carry the yarn through each row without showing?

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 года назад +2

      Hi Lynne! Since each stripe is worked over two garter stitch rows, you always switch colors on the same edge of the work. The pattern alternates two rows of one yarn, then two rows of the other yarn. So when you work two rows in one yarn, the other yarn skips those two rows on the color-changing edge. Then, when you switch yarns, the opposite yarn skips two rows on the edge. So the yarns are automatically carried along the edge neatly when they are not being used. This does show a little bit on the edge of the work, but it is neat and inconspicuous. I hope this helps!

    You certainly do have a very pleasant voice, and you seem to be a very nice person! You did a very beautiful job on your shawl...where did you learn to do that?! I knit, but I haven't gotten anywhere yet. Do you also crochet?

      Thank you, Patrice! I learned basic knitting and other knitting techniques from various books, from working on knitting projects, experimenting, and etc. The Double Gradient technique was something I made up while trying to design something with gradient yarn in my stash. I do crochet as well. I am not an expert at either, and I'm still learning, but I enjoy trying to create original designs. I'm so glad you enjoyed this video! Thanks for watching!

      @@YayForYarn I did enjoy the video, but as I was trying to make this, somehow it didn't come out right! I did everything that you showed on the video, but my stitches aren't coming out right--what am I doing wrong?

      Hi! I would not be able to tell what the problem is without more information. Is it the shape that doesn't look right, or the individual stitches? If you send me a message on facebook (facebook.com/YayForYarnByMGG) or an email (blogger@yayforyarn.com) with a photo of your work, I would be better able to figure out what is wrong and help you out. Thanks!

    How do you decrease on the other side? Thank you. ❤❤

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  Год назад

      Hi. The decrease stitch at the end of row 1 is a knit 2 together, abbreviated K2tog. This is done by knitting through 2 stitches at once, by inserting the needle through 2 stitches instead of 1, and then pulling a new loop of yarn through both stitches as though you were making a regular knit stitch. I hope this helps!

    Hi do you have s vidro for yarn inspirstions demim side by dide short row side by dide v shale hawl? BUT hopefully with the wrsp snd turns done ptoperly? I thought I recalled one but can't find it.
    Its not cowl blice sock or a hat PLEASE. Could you please do a shawl, scarf, or wrap something flat with short rows done propetly and closing them at end with no holes to deal and vlose all of them all up, please. You taught me to be a confident contintel knitter from my mistake ridden English style. Amaxzing, Honesyly you helped my knitting go from beginner to almost intermediate. Any suggedtions on a good order to learn the skills needed so no pattern frightens me? A good book to follow long with?
    I still need to learn the linen stitch, seed stitch, short rows, and broiche, as my goals along with all the skills I pick up with every pattern. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

      Hi Trudy! I'm so glad my videos have been helpful to you. If you're looking for a good knitting book, I recommend this one: amzn.to/2jIUUft It covers many techniques, beginning at the basics and working up to more intermediate stitch patterns. It does have a section on short rows, shows a little about continental knitting, and even covers troubleshooting and fixing mistakes. It does cover everything in a consecutive order, so you can just go through the techniques in the order they are given. I don't think it has a section on Brioche, but the Brioche method is a bit more complex. So it would be good to go through the book first before venturing into Brioche. For now, you might try my shortcut Brioche method, which produces the same type of fabric, but is pretty simple to work. ruclips.net/p/PLmcTBVSjUYHHk1Kq1BRr4boJpU9aZq0Py I hope this helps!
