      @@ansp6980 The motor and the controller are separate in the Leaf. The motor is a three phase induction motor. All you have to do to reverse a three phase motor is revers two of the phases (it doesn't matter which ones). He is doing it correctly and I do have the background to know what I am talking about. The motor controller won't need any adjustment as it won't even notice the change.

    Pull safety plug on top of the battery to make it 'safer' to work with. Also remember to have an access hatch to reach the safety plug in the event of an accident and EMS/towing need to make the car safe for transport. Leaf has a hatch in the floor of the back seat footwell area. Love seeing this coming together

    Respectfully I have to disagree with the comment that EVs can’t be fun. I wont argue that 1st gen Nissan leafs with 107 hp aren’t fun. They aren’t and weren’t designed to be fun. Similar to a boring econobox four banger with a cvt.
    There are plenty of EVs that are fun. The instant torque doesn’t get old. You can get into gaps that even fast ICE sports cars would only dream of. There are no turbos to spool up or gears to downshift. When you hit it, it’s a rush. Plus if you have cars like the model 3 performance, you can still roll donuts and hoon if that’s your thing.
    This is coming from someone with a V8 mustang and fast electric car. It’s not the same and there are things that I still love in a combustion vehicle like a manual transmission or V8 sound, but there are also things that I can only do in an electric car.
    Awesome video series! I love that you are trying something different!

    Not a 100% but since working at a Nissan dealer now for 14 years having that rear suspension backwards might cause unwanted toe change when turning hard or going over bumps. The normal way mounted in a car will slightly toe in under compression. It's one of those things that was talked about often when the Z car came back in 2003.

Cars also need those screens and bullshit because you can’t look out of the windows because of the safety cage so you need something to do inside the car. Fiddling with screens is a very good alternative to watching out the windows for traffic and such. The car starts beeping anyway when you are about to hit anything so do need to pay attention to anything else than some screens.

    Interesting project. I think your perspective on driver experience is very specific to your experience and goals. Having E cars for the last 5 years, I find my nice BMW gas car to be loud, jerky and way overcomplicated, and I enjoy the smooth, quiet and rapid acceleration of electric motor to be fantastic sensory experience. Though those characteristics may be less noticeable in a Leaf. I do agree that range anxiety is real and creates a different pattern of planning and driving from the fuel driven cars, but with the newer cars with larger and fully functional batteries minimize that issue.

    Swapping the phases will change direction of the motor, but you might want to look into resolver feedback. The motor typically receives feedback about the motor position via a resolver or an encoder. If you’re using the OEM leaf controller it might trigger a fault or prevent the motor from spinning if you simply swap phase cables. There’s surely a way around it, but figured I’d mention it in case you hadn’t looked into this yet.
    Been watching for years now, love your videos and can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

      @@DEBOSSGARAGE +1 the motor has a sensor similar to the crank angle sensor on a combustion engine. The interwebs says you have to swap some wires on this sensor too. All the info out there is for the EM57, you have the EM61. I believe the basic idea is the same though the wire colours might be different.

    • @inothome
      @inothome 6 месяцев назад +4

      Exactly what I came to say.... swapping phase will swap motor direction, but depending on the controller feedback, it may cause it to shut down or throw codes. That is more like a BLDC motor than a conventional AC motor and the controller needs to know the rotor position to time the output.
      EDIT: Oil flow too..... the whole gear train will be spinning backwards for long periods and higher speeds than designed. Some have drivetrain driven pumps, some rely on splash lubrication and some external. And, just because one person did it, doesn't mean it works. Guess we'll all find out.

    • @wackowacko8931
      @wackowacko8931 6 месяцев назад +2

      Reversing a frequency controlled AC synchronous motor (I assume, not knowing how it is wired) rarely is as easy as just swapping two of the phases. I'd have a electrical engineer (a power EE, there are many different specialties in electrical engineering) review how the internal wiring of the motor is configured, and how the Nissan controller supplies power to the leads, and the particulars of how the controller works. You might even contact a Nissan engineer about how to reverse the motor, it's possible that they would be open to helping you. Given the amount of power you are dealing with, some extra caution is probably wise. It's a little like asking one of your daughters to rebuild the CAT diesel in your pickup. She might try, but she doesn't know enough about it to know what things she has to be careful doing.

      @@DEBOSSGARAGE What type of gears the Leaf uses? Helical gears or straight cut gears? You might have been influenced by Edison Motors who said that their motors could run forward or backward. But their gears are straight cut, for an off-road truck so noise and vibration don’t matter. You may find normal helical cut gears with thrust bearing on one side. Not applicable to run in reverse duty cycle.

    I work at a fab shop, mostly repair/refurbish/restore older, classic, vintage, antique vehicles.. of my personal projects, two of them are matching ‘55 Buick Super 56R’s, one I’ve been ‘S L O W L Y’ attempting to restore as all original. The other one was originally acquired as a parts-donor for the 1st Buick. Almost immediately after #2 arrived to me at my place, via a 9 car car-hauler from Tucson, Az to my place in SoCal, we got some light rain… that bit of moisture caused the patina of parts cars’ very straight body, to sheen so nicely that i then wanted to switch gears in getting the “parts car” all fully functional, employing all of the worse-off parts from #1, while setting aside its better condition parts (mostly its “bright work” parts) for #1. Now, #2’a original 322 Fireball Nailhead, although complete, was VERY seized up & requires being rebuilt. I’ve gone back & forth in my mind, of trying to decide if that’s be worth doing (#2, although extremely rusty & cancerous, throughout, is a factory original A/C optioned car) or, doing something along the lines of what y’all did with this classic ChEVy, going “HYBRID” instead tho… thoughts?

    Fellow Ontario based custom car enthusiasts - at 10:20 Rich mentions "whoever safeties this..." - Have you had issues getting professionally-done frame work, for example frame notches, performance modifications like replacing solid axle with IRS, engine swaps requiring new engine mounts, or subframe repairs safetied? I've read the safety check list the MTO provides and it's fairly up to interpretation what kind of modifications an inspector can deem safe IMO... For example I'm fitting a front mounted steering rack instead of a rear mounted one in a car I'm working on to clear a new transmission, and therefore moving the subframe member it was mounted to from behind the engine mounts to in front of them. The continuous TIG welds I'm laying down should be leagues stronger than the messy factory MIG stitch welds, so if I were an inspector I'd think "sure it's not OEM, but objectively the risk of failure to hold the steering rack is clearly lower than before and the work was clearly done well, no issues there". Not sure if most other inspectors would share that confidence though.

    A Nissan Leaf isn't an exciting car to drive. It's the Nissan Altima of electric cars. It gets you from point A to point B as efficiently as possible. The handling isn't anything to experience and the power is anemic. Electric cars can give a lot of performance for city driving since they have torque curves that are really flat and start right at 0 RPM, so you can take of and accelerate if you have the power. It kills battery range when you do, but if you lead foot a little, you can get very zoomy very easily in one that has enough power.
    The real place electrics shine is your day to day driving. Running to the store. Picking up the kids. Running errands. Commuting to work. All those 20 mile or less trips, especially the 5 mile or less ones in city traffic. They are all short enough that range is no concern, you can be in sport mode, and the car recharges at home on a regular outlet overnight no problem for less than the price of a hamburger. Plug-in hybrids can also do this and give you the option of long range travel, hence why they are also very popular.

    For me, where I'm at, and where I drive, "range anxiety" doesn't fit particularly well.
    Sure, I can see the attraction in the idea of one day getting into the car, aim for the horizon and take off.
    But I'm well past Bruce Springsteen's lyrics of "I took a wrong turn and I just kept going".
    For all realistic intents and purposes, I know where I'm going and what I can find along the way.
    I can plan and figure out beforehand if it's going to work out.
    So short of road closures, charging stations breaking down or other catastrophic events, I'm good.
    What I'd agree to though is "charge TIME anxiety".
    I do a couple of road trips each year during peak travel time.
    In a Diesel/Gas car, fueling up not an issue. At most, I think I've had two cars ahead of me at the pump.
    On a 7-hour journey, that wait isn't going to register.
    For an EV, facing a two-vehicle wait at the charging station, that's a useful chunk of time.
    This will probably get better with time, but as of now it can be a real issue.

    I don't agree that the driving experience is dull if you drive let's say a Model 3. On the highway, sure. But any car is boring on the highway. Around where I live we have smaller roads I regularly have to drive that are very twisty and with a big portion of twistyness AND good visibility = inspired driving. Once you learn a Model 3 (especially the RWD version that we have) it gets interesting on these roads. When you push it it gives you loads of feedback from the steering and chassis and you can really push these cars. The regeneration braking can be used to balance the behaviour like with engine braking on higher revs. And is really planted. On the highway the Autopilot is great to have as a safety feature and makes you much more relaxed while driving and arriving much less tired. You shouldn't base your opinion on an old Leat is like basing your opinion on Porsches on a 2CV. ;)

    I disagree on the driving experience, I won’t ever go back to driving ICE, EVs are too fun to drive. The instant torque feels like you’re driving a boosted diesel, they just pull and pull and pull.

Your horse can eat grass unlimited along the way for unlimited range. Cars, so fast and quiet.. NOT the excitement of a possible spooked runnaway horse! The arroma of a horse shitting in front of you pulling your cart will really get the young kids excited about the horse industry.

    You will end up with a vehicle that you can only drive a certain distance before you have to spend 45 minutes at a charging station before you can go anywhere else, unless you're going to do the hybrid conversion on it. I spend $20 on gas that will last all week long, unless I do more driving than usual. Luv ya bro, but I'll keep my gas vehicle.

    ...then again, I'm the kind of guy that hates it when the keys in my pocket jingle and my wife threatens to put a cat bell on me, so...
    Also, we need to get you into something more sporty than a Leaf like a Plaid edition Tesla or heck, even just an F-150 Lightning is going to be more fun than that Leaf.

    Range anxiety is only a thing when you have an old Leaf which is basically a Model T in the EV world by now, with a terrible battery that has almost no range. I’ve been driving EV’s for over six years and haven’t had range anxiety for many years. I’m a through and through petrolhead, but love driving our EV as well, but for different reasons than my gas car.

    Driving long distance and it gets boring, that's about the best thing not happening, ("the best part is no part"), so instead off speeding up to focus your attention, engage the robot and watch for the robot mistakes, otherwise, "get a horse" is what the old timers used to tell drivers to whom exciting things happened. Ie horses would find their own way home and the rider only had to not fall off.., so in other words, these EV robots are getting as good as horses now, Cheaper than dieing.

      @@JD-yx7be it's the best solution we have so far for rural Canada. It's a problem when the distance between charging stations exceeds the range. Got a couple at work that bought a volt I think, they have a 25 minute drive on the highway to work and by the time they get home they are down to 15%. And this had been a very warm winter, if it gets to -40 they won't have the range.

    Okay, when people refer to emissions, like a zero emission car, they are correct; If you look at what the word Emission means (the production and discharge of something, especially gas or radiation) you will find that all electric cars are in fact zero emissions. All ICE cars have the same downsides to being made (IE the environmental impact of mining for the materials they're made of) but ICE have the added downside of constantly 'emitting' pollution for its entire life span. Yes, generating the power for charging cars is also not great (getting better with solar wind and nuclear investments) but if you look at how Gasoline is made and then delivered to gas stations, EVs are still way ahead as far as mitigating the environmental impact. it doesn't take a scientist to see that.

    • @DEBOSSGARAGE
      @DEBOSSGARAGE  6 месяцев назад +7

      Debatable. If you see how much fuel is needed to mine the minerals for batteries, dig the holes for the wind turbines, deliver the wind turbines and the amount of concrete poured into the hole to hold up the windmills, the amount of toxic glue used in the fibreglass blades of a turbine, they don't become neutral until the last 1/4 of their life span. And then the amount of extra energy needed to recycle all the materials... Keeping in mind that windmills, and solar panels don't get recycled, they just bury them where people can't see them.

    • @dominikhejl5748
      @dominikhejl5748 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@DEBOSSGARAGE There are fuels used in transporting oil, refining and distributing fuels as well. Consider total amount of EV's on the road, compared to combustion vehicles. The amount of energy required to recycle batteries is super low, since there isn't much EV dead batteries to begin with. There are a few battery recycling plans are located in EU and NA continents. How many oil refineries there are? Hundreds? First mass produced EV models are 13 years old. Lithium batteries have 10-15 year lifespan. (end of projected lifespan means degradation 20 % or more) Batteries still work, but degradation should accelerate slightly from that point. Keep in mind that recycled materials replace some of the suply of freshly mined materials. True for not recycling windmills and panels. There are first tries to develop ways to recycle these as we speak. I think that we should use every way possible to get cheap energy. We should not be focusing strictly on one source of energy. I like your content but i have to disagree with some of your stated negatives about EV's. 1. If you consider 27 years as young, then i disprove the point about driver enjoyment. I find electric drivetrain way more responsive beause of instant torque and regen braking. I work on hyundai EV's. 😁
      2. Range anxiety could apply to leafs. Leafs were pretty bad in terms of battery degradation. Are there any cooling ports on the battery case? Uncooled batteries really suffer when cycled frequently. Liquid cooled batteries in electric cars is standard now. 3. When you drove Topsy, you smiled in exitement. When you imagine this project in your head, you smile in exitement. I am just not convinced, you really see more negatives than positives on EV's. 😁 You work to make it even more positive. I will keep watching your projects, both combustion and electric ones.
