  • York is a historic walled city at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England, and is the traditional county town of Yorkshire to which it gives its name. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events in England throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities making it a popular tourist destination for millions.
The city was founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 AD. It became the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and later of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Jorvik. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained.
In the 19th century, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy.
From 1996, the term City of York describes a unitary authority area which includes rural areas beyond the old city boundaries. In 2011 the urban area had a population of 153,717, while in 2010 the entire unitary authority had an estimated population of 202,400.

I’ve had the pleasure to visit York twice with a totally delightful experience both times. And this video was beautifully shot. But the message I’m seeing wouldn’t be a mega attraction for me to go if I were a first-timer to visit York today. Seems like there was a major focus on streets jammed packed with tourists to the extreme. It didn’t seem to focus on other attractions, such as Clifford’s Tower, the National Railroad Museum with examples going back to the very beginning, and what I’m calling the museum of everyday life, which has great exhibits tracing the evolution of what people had experienced during their lives going back to pre-Victorian times or thereabouts.
There’s so much more to York that congested tourist pedestrian traffic, which wasn’t they way the two times I’ve been there. But that was then. Maybe today.

I don’t know why this popped up on my recommended feed today but I immediately tapped it. 36 years ago as college student from the states visiting my mom (on a work assignment) in nearby Harrogate for a summer abroad I happened to take the local tiny train to York for a visit by myself and was transfixed by its perfect medieval architecture and scale - I am an architect today - including the fabulous York Minster. A couple of days later it was nearly destroyed by fire. I can remember the region acted much like the tragedy of the Norte Dame Fire of last year and was in shock and mourning. It’s great to see the charming city again so many years later (if only by video) and a very successful restoration of the York Minster. Cheers to all the wonderful residents of North Yorkshire 36 years later from California!

Born and bred in York and in 1966 emigrated as a nineteen-year-old to Australia with my family. Personally, I realised about eight years ago that it was a big mistake, not that I haven't done well in Australia far from it...BUT my heart is still in York. I miss England so very much, the green rolling hills, the incredible historic buildings, the beautiful winding and pristine rivers, the patchwork fields and hedgerows along with the lovely twittering birds. There is nothing quite like the beautiful and sublime country sounds of birds and insects. I'm planning on going back soon if I can convince my wife that she will be able to return to live in Australia when I eventually die.
Oh, and another thing, the Liberal/Conservative Government has destroyed Australia.

After living here for longer than I'd say about 3 weeks you will want to move back where you came from, so bit of advice don't move to York literely one of the worst places to live in the UK.

    • @ThecovertCustomer
      @ThecovertCustomer 5 лет назад

Alison N it’s amazing in so many ways! I moved here 8 years ago. The downsides are that you need terribly deep pockets, as house prices/rental prices take up around 2/3 of the average persons wage - so if like me, you live alone, be prepared to really scrimp to live here.
Wages are on the lower end of the scale here and most of it is centred around the hospitality industry.
Most things are priced with tourists with money to spend in mind, which puts a lot of activities out of reach for a resident.
Also, the hoards that come here binge drinking from other cities (think hen and stag parties) makes it unpleasant to be in from mid afternoon at the weekends. A lot of residents avoid it for this reason.
Shops, like. most high streets now, are closing rapidly, to be left either empty or to become yet another drinking/eating establishment. There are hundreds considering the size of the city. We are saturated with them.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my adopted city, and the sacrifices I make to live here are worth it on the whole, but it’s not all this film makes it out to be. There are some truly run down and/or ugly areas, even in the centre. Look up Rougier Street and Piccadilly. There are plenty more like that. Lots of housing estates and coronation street type houses round the corner from the over priced luxury apartments.
Don’t get me wrong, I love love love my adopted city, and the sacrifices I make to live here are worth it on the whole. - but it’s not all this film makes it out to be.

Such a wonderful video and an incredible city to visit. Having visited York on a number of occasions, I could not recommend it enough. The kids loved it as well as the grown ups, particularly the shambles street. Which is arguably similar to the streets that appear in Harry Potter. Although, if you do visit the city I would strongly recommend having a car to hand. It provides freedom to visit the outside regions of the city where some of the most wonderful activities are. Should you be visiting from abroad consider a local car hire provider, such as 4x4vehiclehire.co.uk/4x4-hire-york/. Thank you for the wonderful video and I wish everybody a great visit to York.

Only rent a car if you intend on using it outside of town, as a York resident it is terrible trying to cross York when the the centre is always busy, the best way to get to your location through the day is to use the A64 which will always be the longer route but about 10x + quicker.

I'll have to do some research when how they're destroying it's natural beauty.. I'm not sure the exact way that you mean... although I would imagine that maybe they're taking gorgeous areas and building too many houses and stores and Roads ?
Is that what you mean or is there something else going on... I always get sad when I see beautiful green areas being taken this way.
