This Gold Town Was Just BOOMING --- Until This Happened!

This is a story Mineral Park a once booming Arizona gold mining town not far from Kingman Arizona that became a ghost town after the rail road came to town.
It was back in the 1860s that gold and silver was first discovered in this area of the cerbat mountain range. There was a story about three miners who had found a vein of gold and started shafting down. One day while the three miners were down in the shaft they were attacked by native indians who started tossing heavy rocks down the shaft on top of them. What a hell of away to go. Anyhow that bit of news didn't seem to disuade other miners and prospectors from coming to this area to seek their fame and hopefully their fortune.
This was really rugged country back then and difficult to get to. One of the biggest problems here was that the water had a very high mineral content and you couldn't drink it and so water bad to be hauled in over narrow rocky trails from several miles away. However because the gold and silver was so rich, people kept coming into the area and by 1870 the first mine was going into production. This mine was known as the Mayflower mine and it was followed by the Keystone mines shortly after. By 1871 a small town was taking shape and the following year this small town got a post office.

I was in Mineral Park last year. Most of the buildings are gone. There is a miner's shack and the walls of the post office. You can see the headframe for one of the mines up on the side of the north slope. To the south of this is a huge active strip mine with tailings piles covering the rest of the valley of Mineral Park. The large hill at the entrance to the valley is gone. The road the stage coach used to take to get through the Cerbat Mountains is unpassable and gated on the Kingman side. It's still scenic for all of that, but the strip mine takes away from a lot of the natural beauty of that little valley.
The town of Cerbat, which is a few miles to the south, has suffered the same fate. When I was there a few years ago, a D10 dozer was actively cutting into the mountain where the mines were located. The head frame is gone, and there is only one small collapsed shack left. The rest is part of an active mine area with a cinderblock building.

Yeah, circa 1962, before Duval got going, an old timer went to our church. He lived to the east of in one of the canyons up closer to the top of the mountain. He showed us a tunnel that went back maybe 200 feet where he found a piece of native silver the size of a football.... After Duval was running an open pit, around 1968, we used to drive the back road from what is called Stockton hill road now, which was a power line road. And pick up buckets of turquoise from the dump.... Fun place to grow up.

I'm hoping to go around Kingman next winter and will take a drive up this way. Thank you for the bit of history and information. The buckets of turquoise sound interesting. You can't be interested in old mine and not be a rock hound. Thank you for stopping by and watching. New video every Saturday morning.

Had a small mill circa 1976 in Kingman, have worked around mining and refining most of my life. If you take the time machine back to the 80s, put up a small mill in Nevada, which has all been now reclaimed and no evidence of this mine at all. Quality of video is poor as it was a family outing at the time. That mine, except for my knowledge, will be another lost mine... ruclips.net/video/pixxr5ZyANY/видео.html

That looks like a nice area. I have a friend who went around Dolan Springs to metal detect. He was looking at some prospecting claims there a few years back. Wherever there is lode gold there is a good chance that placer is close by. Thanks for watching and have a great week.
