One of the band members of The Commodores wife wrote this song just before she passed away. It was hard for them to even perform this song and it hit the band pretty hard.

This song takes me way back when life was simple. Still listening to old school in 2021! Nothing better. Please react to Commodores “just To Be Close To You” 🙏🏽
My absolute FAVORITE Commodores song! Lionel Richie did his thing on this song. This is seriously Old School Lionel. It's one of those songs you can sit back, relax, chill and let the music take your mind off anything that's stressing you. I'm so glad I grew up during a time when music was real, had lyrics that told a story, meant something and was soothing to your soul! Yes, this is another one on serious rotation on Spotify for me.💚💙💜
You should check out "Easy", "Just to Be Close To You", "Sweet Love", Jesus Is Love. Lionel Richie is that lead singer on this and most of the songs until he left the group.
Lionel Ritchie is the lead singer for the group. He left the group and had a successful solo career. Currently he is a judge on the TV show, American Idol.
That is the amazing voice of the iconic Lionel Richie! He was great as the lead singer of the Commodores and had an amazing solo career! They are one of the best R&B/Funk bands of all time!! I love it!❤️❤️
This song reminds me so much of my dad )who I am thankful that he’s still here). Hearing it makes me smile and takes me back as a little girl hearing my daddy sing it! 😊🥹
My older sister dated one of the Commodores( no not Lionel) when they were starting out & all in college & band. Their relationship started to get serious and our dad forbid her from seeing him. Why? Cause he wouldn't be able to support her as "musician" This the nice version of what Daddy said. Imagine our dad's face and colorful language when we showed him the spread in Ebony mag of the Commodores with the guy in his at home studio while we played one of daddy's favorite songs at the time "Brick house" LOL!
I find the sound at 3:25 one of the best in music history - it just moves me every time I hear it.... don't know why exactly, it just does. Full TRANCE mode.
Oh YES ! One of my favorite Commodores songs. The words to this song are so Zen so deep. This song was played a friends funeral and so fitting as a send off. Lionel Ritchie and the Commodores were such a talented group. Writing, singing, playing their instrumentals, arranging and producing. My goodness! Most artists and groups today don't even have one quarter of the talent of these old groups.
Lionel wrote "Three Times A Lady" for his Grandfather to sing to his Grandmother at their 50th (I believe) Anniversary Party. I think that was so sweet. I bet that was very emotional.
This is like when my uncle hit me with love's holiday in 1977. I didn't know about Earth, Wind and Fire until then. Years later i sang it at his funeral
One of my favorite Commodores songs. Lionel was the main writer in the group. We knew he would go solo. Album of the year went in this order in the 80s: MJ, Prince, Lionel.
That's Lionel Ritchie, he left the Commodores and went solo. He is one of the geniuses in this business and just a brilliant singer/songwriter! When you hear him your listening to his stuff! Brilliant guy!!!
This is my all time favorite Commodore song! This song takes me back to a time in the 70’s where I was a free spirited young woman getting ready to be on my journey as a nurse in the military. My love was so great then ! Lionel Ritchie , Good Lord had the voice back then. I saw him in concert with Mariah and he is still very relevant…a great singer and songwriter. I love him as a judge on American Idol too❤️
Lionel Ritchie, America's greatest writer of love songs in the R&B/R&R era. Try him doing "Easy", "You Are", "My Love", "Ballerina Girl", "Sail On", "Hello", "Truly", "Penny Lover", "Three Times A Lady", "All Night Long", and so many others.
@@helgar791 did I say that were? Nope. They’re Australian. Nothing that good could be American. Lionel Richie is not the greatest American write of live songs in “America” that would be baby face. Either way you’re wrong. 🤷♀️ what cha gonna do
@@Glammazonsyn Lionel Ritchie has had 8 number one hits in his career, which is tied for the lead for the most in history by a solo artist. Babyface has had 2. Babyface has had 8 in the top 10. Lionel, 13. Babyface has had 12 in the top 100. Ritchie, 20. Ritchie's "Hello" and "Three Times A Lady" alone have been covered by more people than all of Babyface's songs combined. By all objective measurements, it's not close. And again, I said AMERICAN writer of love songs. The BeeGees are not AMERICAN. I saw the Commodores live about 3 years and they sounded wonderful. Another original member sang all of Lionel’s parts. Since groups back in the day were often musicians as well as vocalists the songs sounded musically as fantastic as they did in the studio. It was a great concert.
"Sail On". He broke up with the girl and sent her on her way so hard and coldheartedly. "Sail on down the line 'bout a half a mile or so, and I don't really wanna know where you're going."
Lionel Richie wrote this song when he was with The Commodores. Then he went solo. And record some great songs. But he wrote a song called Lady for a White country male artist. IT. IS. BAD. Kenny Rodgers sings the hell out of that song. Try to find the one from the 80's live.

I have my parent’s vinyl copy of this album. My dad bought it for her when they first started dating. He got her this, took her to see Star Wars and then dancing on their first date. They both start getting DOWN whenever this comes on. Easy is one of their “songs” along with Best of my Love by The Emotions, and Forever Mine by The O’Jays. 43 years and 3 grown kids later, my parents gave us some BOMB music to love ourselves!!
