- Rescued from a now gone RUclips upload, this was an infomercial Nintendo produced to tell the public all about its new Famicom peripheral, the Disk System. The video shows how the system is setup with the Famicom, how to start a game, what to expect from the system as the game loads and what the Disk System can do that ordinary cartridges cannot.
To showcase the enhanced features of the disk system, Nintendo chose to focus on two of its most impressive games in development for the peripheral, the Legend of Zelda (THE HYRULE FANTASY ゼルダの伝説) & The Mysterious Murasame Castle (謎の村雨城). Both games are shown in a pre-release state. Things to note in Zelda is the choice you get between the sword and the boomerang, the speed of the enemies and the differences in the dungeons. Musasame Castle as uses music with significantly different instrumentation than in the released game. The disk writer's operation is also shown, with a "cartridge slot" that looks very NES-like in its operation.
The original video which was uploaded to RUclips (and subsequently downloaded) had a section of audio removed to avoid a content ID claim from 3:10-3:59. I spliced the missing audio back in using a lower quality source. The restored audio includes game music, sound effects, narration and voice acting, so I thought it was worthwhile. While this video is elsewhere on RUclips, here it is in the best quality known to exist and in its most complete form.
English subtitles have now been added for the voice-over narration. Note that while the Famicom Disk System's media is referred to as a "Disk Card" throughout, the subtitles use the more familiar term "floppy disk". Similarly, the voice over refers to "cassettes" but the translation uses the term "cartridge" in these instances.
Thank you for uploading this! The Mysterious Murasame Castle section is especially interesting, as nearly every single screen they showed is different from the final, along with several differences in the sprites and music as well

My mind is blown! Somehow never seen this before. I had a hunch the instruction booklet illustrations were from animation cells
wow, this is so good. love the animated zelda scenes
Thanks for tracking this down, restoring the audio (possibly making the subtitles too?), and reuploading it. I saw this video being talked about on some old webpages, but all the links were dead. Was a little afraid that it was totally lost in "HD" and with English subs.
very beautiful infomercial
good job there. love the part where there's a screen saying "downloading data from disc, do not turn console off".
10:38 NES cartridges used to save Disk System games
What happened to all that machines and soft paks? They all go back to Nintendo headquarters?
It is known that all those Disk Writers were returned to Nintendo and then destroyed
Thanks for this. I've never seen it before. I like how the rupees were originally called gold. They should have left it that way.
Rewriting the game? That's legalized piracy!
I'm here before tears of the kingdom
It's always feels great to visit the past before looking to the future especially when you find something you've never seen before.
The animations for Zelda no Densetsu are (forgive me) SO KAWAII!!
Very interesting that the disk writer kiosk uses NES style game paks
I like this videogame console japanese, greetings from Guaranda, Ecuador.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨
Does anyone know if there is a more complete version of these Zelda snippets? Some of these images didn’t make it into the instruction booklet while the booklet shows stills not represented in this promo.
There's different cover art for Zelda 1 on the disk writer machine!!!
If anyone would be so kind as to enlighten me on what the television model used in the end is, I'd be grateful! (I'm looking for a CRT to use my Famicom and Famicom Disk System on)
This was so cool
That music YES.😊

Does anyone know who did the animation for Zelda?
I wish there were Japanese Subtitles for this.

Who’s this Japanese girl?
That is Mae Nomura. She worked for Nintendo until she was caught playing a Sega Master System. She was never heard from again and all information about her was erased by Nintendo.
