As a longtime Soundgarden fan I gotta say I loved this lesson of one of their tunes I'd never learned before. This is a really great song. Not overly heavy compared to a lot of metal but it has it's own kind of heaviness that comes from how slow, dark and strange it is. The wierd tuning, the wierd time signature and all the harmonics that are part of the riff. Not to mention the strange lyrics. Also some significant mood changes in this from the intro to the main theme riff, verse riff, chorus riff and the interlude. Love it.
This lesson is a reminder why Kim Thayill is one of the weirdest and most wonderful guitarists ever. His tone and sound and weird rhythms were born for Chris' voice, and Chris' voice was born for Kim's guitar.
@@Labyrinth1010 You are correct. I don´t remember this song especifically, but most of Soundgarden´s classic songs were composed by Chris in its entirety. There is a general idea that everybody did their thing, and that´s true to an extent, but Thayil basically was the guitar solo guy. As music composer, Chris was the wizard, and then Ben.
@@LetsPlayAll Yes! I remember you had a tutorial of using a chorus pedal and how Soundgarden used it for the main riff in Hunted Down. That helped me learn the song. Thank you very much! They also use the chorus pedal for the main verse in Black Hole Sun too.
Great job sir thank you for sharing! I’m curious what your take is on a certain part in a song called “Unsung” from Helmet. I have the song down however it seems every time I hear that ending bridge into the outro, I keep hearing something new. Your take sir?!
Thanks mate! Sorry I’m not familiar with that tune, Patreon best bet for specific parts of songs as I get so many requests 😊🤘www.Patreon.com/letsplayall
Fantastic 😊. I'm a brand new beginner and I understood everything you did! I'm having trouble finding an equally informative video for the bass part. Any chance you play bass and could make a tutorial for that one as well? 😊
@@riccardomeacci3688 haha thanks man, appreciate it! I was lucky to pick this up second hand and it's just a beauty to play, simple guitar with a P90 and volume control and that's it! Maybe i'll do a gear video at some point :-)
Thanks! P90s aren’t far off humhuckers, Kim likely used his guild Polara which have their HB-1s and I think Chris used a bunch of stuff. I’d go humbuckers if you’re after their sound tho tbh
@@LetsPlayAll thanks for the reply! I have one of my guitars outfitted with P90s, already. I love that sound! A bit sharper than humbuckers with more bite :). One of the greatest pickups of all time. Yours seem less noisy than most. Are you using a noise gate or something?
Let's Play All yeah I think it was Matt & Kim who wrote the music for Limo Wreck & Chris wrote the lyrics. That’s what I love about Soundgarden. All 4 members contributed to the writing
@@ruanddu The writing credits are in the liner notes of the Superunknown album & also the guitar transcription book. Matt also wrote the music for Mailman, Fresh Tendrils & co-wrote the lyrics to Fresh Tendrils amongst others.
Its funny, I can still remember most of how to play (or at least how I was playing them) from 25 years ago... I had this one pretty accurate. Programming the drums to this should be a little easier... I nearly gave myself a fucking aneurysm programming Fresh Tendrils.
That natural harmonic riff is one of the most radical riffs ever
The bass line to this is nuts too

@@LetsPlayAll You uploaded Let Me Drown?
🎉 Genius riff
One of the darkest sounding riffs ever
MustObeyTheRules it really is full of brilliant riffs, the pre-verse riff is just great
So, freaking good.
Very black sabbath

This is my favorite Soundgarden song. Great!
Fernando Bobbio cool! 😀
Thanks for the great breakdown. One of my very favorite Soundgarden songs it doesn't get enough credit
Genuinely giddy with excitement about learning this song. Thanks!
Andrew Clarke you’re welcome Andrew!

I think Chris wrote a lot (most?) of these riffs.

Bill Alexander haha appreciate you lending it to me mate! 🤘😀
@@LetsPlayAll no worries.. Just make sure to return it someday. Lol
Bill Alexander haha done ✅
finally know how to do those natural harmonics ur the best keep it up
Thanks, will do!
I find using a chorus pedal in the main riff useful to get those harmonic pinch sounds it helps and plus it gives a trippy, psychedelic vibe.
nice! they used lots of chorus on their tracks especially the early stuff

Wonderful. That is just perfect

I'm loving mail man also . So pleasing to play. Even if on acoustic haha.
What’s the amp you’re running in this? The P90, the Friedman OD and that amp sound great together!
Thanks! Victory V40 in this vid 🤘

Thanks and sorry to be that guy :) but is this doable with regular tuning.
yea for sure, we had a big community vote a while back and the majority ruled to be taught in the original tuning :-)
