I have an experiment for you: you will need four beds try planting a small but deep bed of soil that has just barely enough nutrients for a plant. Plant three tomato plants in there, two lettuce plants, and a few carrots. Then plant clover and other semi-short cover crops in one of the beds and weeds like dandelions in the next. Leave one bare and one mulched with a basic wood mulch that won't give too many nutrients (for the sake of the test). See which produced the best and by how much of a margin. I'm seriously beginning to doubt if herbicides and weeding are usefull at all and we would be at least three times as sustainable if they weren't. After the growing season is over(leave all plants in soil) take a small shovel and dig into the dirt and see how hard it is on each test. Take a drainage test and test the nutrients left in the soil after the season.

Interesting trial design my friend. I would love to see your results if you try it.

i had no idea you had a garden here in aus. my garden is going crazy too, especially the spaghetti squash. but some of the other plants seem to suffer so much on the 40+ C days. they look like balloons someone popped. have to really baby them so they dont get cooked.

Wicked! You have had some crazy weather over there! Is your garden coping?

some of the plants leaves burnt and fell apart in the 40 degree days, i installed some 50% shade screen over it, and most loved that but a few developed problems from the lowered light, so cant win them all. all plants were labelled the same light exposure but obviously they have varied requirements. its doing well now though! some Caterpillar problems but everything is growing strong now.

George Gibson well, I do close up shots of the garden (I shot this video) because I love the detail of everything :-) next time I'll make sure to include a wider shot so you can see it all! :-)
