  • WARNING: Garage doors can be heavy and dangerous. Watch your fingers and don't put them near the door seams or anywhere that could pinch your finger during opening or closing. Proceed at your own risk or call a professional.
A common problem with a garage door that can be expected every 6-10 years is a garage door spring breaking. If it is a heavy door, two cars, there are typically 2 springs. This video shows how to get your door open if one of the two springs is broken, often resulting in a trapped car.

This video is so niche, the kind you only watch when you have THIS SPECIFIC problems. Thanks man, its pretty simple once you see it done, but i was scared to break something while trying it without seeing someone else do it first.

Thanks for the video tip. Our garage door wouldn't open because of one broken spring. It would go up about a foot, get stuck, then go back down again. I followed your advice and assisted the opener by becoming the second spring. It's important to get the timing right, as if I didn't push up instantly on the door as it was opening it appeared to detect overload and the motor stopped. By pushing it up the moment the motor engaged I was able to get it open and get the car out.
I should also add that because I live in Florida, my double door is heavier than the average double door because of extra hurricane bracing added to it. Using your method I was still able to get it open on my own, but could really feel the extra weight when I initially pushed up on it.
Thanks again for the tip, and thumbs up!

Thank you so much, got into an awful situation tonight. Parked my car in the garage went upstairs and hear a big thud from the garage. Sure enough the garage was stuck and after looking I noticed that the major spring at the top was busted on one side. No other videos seemed to factor in that this specific situation could make the door inoperable to open manually and by extension offered no solution to get the car out besides calling a repairman which for me was likely impossible because it was already 11pm at night. Long story short thank you, I was able to get my car out and will be able to pick my parents up from the airport tomorrow morning. You have my gratitude!

I echo Wen's sentiment. On Halloween night (10/31/18) I heard a loud bang coming from the garage and knew right away what the problem was, due to this happening to my next door neighbor about a year earlier. I spent all day yesterday trying to get someone to come fix the problem so that I could get my car out, but everyone I talked to wanted what I thought was way too much money. I was going stir-crazy from feeling stuck, but when I finally calmed down it occurred to me that there might be a way to get the door open, and so I decided to Google it. Lo and behold your video showed up in the search, and thankfully your garage door looked just like mine so I knew this could be the right solution. After trying to get it up on my own unsuccessfully, I shared the link with a male friend of mine, who thought that it couldn't be that easy. Long story short, he came by the next afternoon, and following your instructions, we got the door open in less than 5 minutes! I am so deeply grateful that you posted this video. Thank you so much.

Well if you are calling people to work after hours for emergency service, don’t be surprised when it actually cost money. These guys work 65-85 hrs a week when they are on call, so yeah it cost money to rip someone away from their family after hours.

Thank you for this video. My husband will be leaving for elk hunting for five days and our left spring broke at 9:00 last night (with a loud noise that frightened both me and our cat). My husband is recovering from a hairline fracture of his right radial head and I have what my doctor calls an "angry shoulder" but this morning we were able to open our 19+ year old door, pull my car out of the garage and then close the door. He then called a repair company to replace both springs, but I can got about my planned errands now and even if the door isn't repaired while he is elk hunting.

very helpful and common sense; incident happened on a weekend at my elderly father's house, and i had no experience with torsion springs and door openers; video turned what was a concerning situation with the only car being trapped inside the garage into a minor nuisance of opening the door with some minor manual effort

Good info. I had this happen today. Finally noticed that the spring on one side was broken. Just about the time I started looking for videos, I started thinking: "Half the spring that helps open the door is gone. Maybe if I just got under there to help push." Mine wasn't nearly as easy as this. Taller, heavier door and even with me pushing with all my 6'1" 185lb frame, it stalled. I kept toggling the opener when it would stop. With EVERYTHING I HAD before collapsing physically and mentally, it opened.

One recommendation: My garage door opener has a torque limiter and it tripped out with the door open about one foot and locked in position, so I couldn't manually help it open. I turned the torque limiter up to the max setting and then I was able to manually assist the opener, like is shown in this video. I have an old Sears Craftsman opener and the torque limiter is on the back end of the door opener. It is an adjustment screw labeled "Opening Force". Remember to return the torque limiter to the required setting when you get the torsion springs repaired.
