    Your speech about mobility aides and the internalized ableism hits home. I have a degenerative condition as well as a plethora of other health issues that make life a game of chronic pain. I've had 3 back surgeries, a knee surgery, and recently was diagnosed with another condition that adds to my pain.
    I have been told by my doctor that I qualify for a wheelchair or a handicap tag. I wouldn't need it all the time but on the days my health is struggling, it would be so beneficial. But I am so scared to just take that step like you mentioned.
    I don't think I'm bad enough but also I can't experience parts of myself, like pride, without assistance.
    You're inspiring and you're valued. You are more than your pain and diagnoses. Happy pride and I hope you stay well

      Oh gosh that's awful. I'm so sorry you've been through so much. I took my stick out with me the other day... It stayed in my bag though. Baby steps. Quite literally. Omg get those aids though! The tag too! Agreed it's a huge mental block... but for the bad days the tag would be so validating if people were dicks (urgh why are people dicks though).
      I know if I used a chair I would be able to get out more... I need to start using the stick... but that makes my wrists hurt :(

    I'm so glad youtube recommended you to me. You have such a soothing voice and the doll turned out amazing! She looks absolutely stunning and ethereal.
    My heart broke for you a little bit when you talked about how you would love to wear that dress. I wholeheartedly hope you one day get the chance to wear it. I'm sure you'd look stunning in it, no matter if you wore it outside or in your house!
    I am a plus sized seamstress so it always saddenes me to hear when people feel like they need to fit into some body stereotypes to be able to wear what they want. And it saddens me that I still feel that way, too. Some days I look in the mirror and feel like I can't wear those beautiful romantic gowns because I'm chunky. I wish that one day we can see ourselfs and society as more beautiful because of our size and differences, not inspite of them. I hope that makes sense? English isn't my first language.
    Anyways. I subscribed to you and now will go down the rabbit hole to watch each and every other video you made :)

      I have many plus-size friends who wear Loli and they look beautiful in their frocks! I am so happy they express themselves and 'normal' be damned! I am a pear plus size so clothes never fit right unless I have separates. I just wear jeans and tee shirts now because I have always hated dresses. I do know my best dress style for my body type is the shirtwaist, with shoulder pads.

    i love so many things you did with this doll! she turned out so magical and is an absolutely lovely project to return to youtube with. the face up is so sweet and i’m Obsessed with how you kept the clear aspects of spectra’s limbs. i’ve always thought it a bit of a waste when those get painted over completely in most repaints even though i get that not every design needs clear hands/feet lol. with your unicorn it amps up the magic vibe imo and i’m loving it. and that dress! i love everything about it. seeing her all come together was a real treat

    Thank you for making such a beautiful doll as always. As a person with somewhat of an invisible disability, I appreciate the talking points you made during your face up. I live in NYC and have always wanted to go to Pride, but I have severe sciatica and cannot walk for long periods of time. But because I live in a bigger body, if I use my walking aides publicly, I receive a lot of open scrutiny. People assume I need the aides because I’m plus sized and discriminate based on that (as well as racial discrimination) instead of the fact that I’ve gained weight because of my mobility issues. It’s so hard to navigate in spaces when society makes no room for those of us that are “othered” and yet there still isn’t room for us in “othered” communities either.

    • @Dolleemixtures
      @Dolleemixtures  Год назад +1

      Ahhh! omg relate! I was slim before my disabilities caused me to stop being able to work. I've had doctors even say 'well lose weight and you're disabilities will get better'. No bro, other way round!!! Maybe we need to do an online pride sometime? I'm so sorry you experience sciatica. That has to be horrible

    • @afroborilafemme
      @afroborilafemme Год назад

      @@Dolleemixtures Yes! Thank you so much. It feels so affirming when someone gets it! I’ve had the same thing with doctors, blaming my disability on my weight when the disability came first. They even gaslit me and fed into my own ableist biases when I was younger “you’re young, you’re healthy, this will pass, you just have to do xyz” now 15 years later it’s worse and somehow all my fault although they never properly directed or treated me.
      I love the idea of an online pride! That would help so many people with different physical and mental disabilities that prevent them from attending anything in person.

What my Mother does though is rent a wheelchair for a week when she comes to visit me or goes on vacation. It's worked out for her. I know that may also be out of reach for you, but it might be a way to be able to go somewhere and experience the community that way.

I should look into it for that though. I don't want to be super exhausted. I'll be standing up and down though to get a proper look at all the art. It's a great idea for pride too! i really felt you with that comment about not being able to go to pride due to disability, as someone who suffers from chronic anxiety, depression and fatigue, im lucky i got to go once in my life, back when i was more in shape, because i was never able to go again, be it because of the pandemic or because i broke down in sweat and tears in the way there, mental illness and being even slightly out of shape can ruin someone's life completely by blocking out so many possibly enjoyable things, such as social events. and even though i managed to go to pride once, i still ended up passing out on the street in my parents's arms, it was traumatic for me to experience such a lack of energy at such a supposedly joyous event...and my anxiety only grew worse over the years...but i want to remind everyone, that no matter how bad it gets, never give up, baby steps will take you far, you may not reach your goal, but you'll still make some progress, and its important to acknowledge the good parts before the bad, one day everything will be better, keep up hope and do what you're capable of, within your limits ❤

Though I have a very cheap one and I need help being pushed because it put strain on my arms and wrists and it can't handle irregular surfaces. So I can't take it to protests or pride. I really would love a rollerator or a electric wheel chair. (though in my City I am able to bring camp chairs and sit next to the parade route for that part of pride at least.)

      @laurawilliams7782 Год назад +2

      Just a note of personal experience with a rollator - if you can rent or try one out before getting one, I do suggest it. My mom had one for a while, and we both found it incredibly heavy and difficult to use with public transport if we had to lift it. There were a lot of stores that had close aisles that we couldn't access, or stairs we had to carry the thing up. Also not being able to use escalators was a huge downside for me. Everyone is different of course, but I'd assumed it would be like a half way point between a cane and wheelchair in terms of accessiblity, but it was actually worse. I don't have the arm strength to do the lifting required. But it's cheaper so... Hope I'm not intruding too much here.

Anyway, to answer the question 6:14 I think maybe you can one day assemble some of the pieces to make a doll? Like your own take of Frankenstein monster. And another idea, kinda untalented but it made me think, maybe one day try making a doll with a physical disability. Like it doesn’t have an arm, for example. Just some ideas that popped into my head!

    What a beautiful doll! How about Persistence for a name?
    I cannot go to Pride because of multiple invisible and chronic autoimmune diseases, so I can completely relate to what you talked about in this video. It used to be held in the gay-centric part of town, where parking was non-existent and attempting to get to where the activities were happening as a disabled person was unattainable. Now it is held at the state fair grounds, which has ample parking and room, but June in Texas on asphalt is heatstroke waiting to happen. One of my heart daughters was there with her company this year and they ended up bowing out of the parade due to the heat. I have also never attended Pride, but I decorate my cubicle during June.
    I became aware of my non-binary, gender-fluid (male), pan self at the young age of 55. Why so late? Because I finally had names for who I had always been but could never find similar people with the same feelings. I have always been comfortable in my stumpy fat body so finally knowing who I was inside was a delight.
    I use all my health issues to teach others. They wonder why I have such a positive attitude with all that is seriously wrong with me. I say it is either get every morning and go to work, or never get out of bed again. Yes, I have autoimmune exhaustion. I sleep at least 12 hours every Saturday and Sunday to recover from a full-time hybrid work week. The days I am working from home I end the day and fall asleep if I have not gotten enough rest the night before, which is rare. I am awake right now because I went to bed at 8pm last night. When I am asleep, my partner cannot wake me. I am down hard.
    Do I still pursue my art? Of course I do. The Zentangle Method cut my pain levels in half. Drawing in general helps my pain. When we finally move into my folks house (left to me by them), I will finally have my own studio space to call my own and will start painting BJDs again.
    Thank you for the article links!

    wrt sanding vinyl: the key is grit. you cant got at it with less than 220, or you'll just gouge it, and honestly it's best to have up to 1000-2000 grit to smooth it out one youre done shaping it. personally, i trim it down with an xacto knife first, then sand with lower grit to higher grit.

    • @Dolleemixtures
      @Dolleemixtures  Год назад

      Oof that sounds like a seriously slow job 😐 1000-2000 would take about eleventy billion years. I was using a 240 and that wasnt getting far... It's going to be a while before I send a head again but I think I'll sit in front of the TV with it 😅

    • @BarrytheChopper101
      @BarrytheChopper101 Год назад

      @@Dolleemixtures hahah, i mean, i had that on hand, for other reasons, and it helped me. idk how high it needs to be to get as smooth a finish, but my polishing sandpaper worked really well! the thing with this hobby is, it's so much experimentation; you cant really know what does and doesnt work until you do it yourself. like, with shrinking heads for instance, everybody on youtube was always like "it's too hard once it's shrunk, you gotta cut it to get it back on" but i found out, you can just head it up like normal, and it'll soften enough to get back on the neckpeg. SUPER important that it's already 100% dry first, though; any remaining acetone will warp the vinyl if you introduce heat. like you gotta TRY stuff to find out stuff, yknow?

    Sharpen your pencils more, use a longer tip to allow you to see it better and lean back or look away every so often to see the big picture. I don't know if you work from roughs or plan in your head but having a physical reference helps you plan, while still leaving room for changes throughout.

    • @Dolleemixtures
      @Dolleemixtures  Год назад

      Ah I'm so excited that you want to help me with my art!! I'm not sure if you've seen my vids before but I don't include the sharpening pencils/changing pencils in the face up, I edit it out to cut down time. I always work from reference, I mentioned in this vid that I do, and that I was working from images of Anne Hathaway in Alice in Wonderland but not exclusively he because this is not a portrait doll. I don't really know what you mean by physical reference though, do you mean I should have a human in my craft room to look at? Wouldn't mind the company but I'd have to take the magnifiers I wear off to be able to see her and I think she would get uncomfortable on my desk 🤔. I always plan my dolls, I use the book that I sell on Amazon that you can buy here to plan your own dolls! (Doll Design Sketchbook a.co/d/5tqspJx) if you'd like to see the plans that I make, i share them on my patreon at all tiers which you can sign up for here www.patreon.com/dolleemixtures

    I've missed your videos so much! I genuinely didn't do anything special for Pride but almost at the beginning of Pride I made a gender discovery, which is demigirl (sometimes I feel like a woman other times I feel like a genderless gremlin lol which basically what demigirl means) and just after Pride came out as fictosexual which I wasn't fully comfortable saying till now because an ex partner criticised me for saying I might be fictosexual.
    Also I think you could possibly take a crack at a strawberry dress life size, you know how to make doll clothing I think you'd do amazing at it! 😊

    • @Dolleemixtures
      @Dolleemixtures  Год назад +1

      Ooh! I was thinking about putting it on patron cause it wasn't one I was thinking about doing a properly good sellable pattern for. I ironed the seams a LOT. Usually I wouldn't iron gathers. For the attachment of the skirt and the top there's an extra little yoke. The inside skirt is sewn a bit lower than the outer. Tbh it IS a little bit bulky. I used to always try and get my doll clothes to be skin tight and super slim... But I love the super skinny sway back that monster high dolls have anyway... I think a smidge of bulk hides itself....

So I’m scared to say to them that I know I’m 30 but I’ve been Bi since I was 12 and my first kiss was with a girl. 😅 oof went on a bit of a ramble. Sorry.
