Hey guys, my good friend and fellow RUclips Sam let me have a play in his awesome 2016 Audi RS3. I've always had a soft spot for the RS3, the first gen car was unfortunately a big let down, Audi RS have made this one feel like it has no relation to that car besides the engine. It's a very, very expensive Hot Hatch, but you can see where your money goes. A Focus RS will offer more fun when pushing on, a BMW M140i offers a better overall package, but if you have the budget this really does make a huge case for itself!

I just picked up an ex demonstrator AMG A45 for £37k. Very pleased with it. Not as raucous as my old 135i Coupe but oh so quick. Plus the quality.

Hi Joe, I will tell you why i bought an A45 over this if you like. Just come off 3 years of Audi ownership had a very well sorted S3 8p Sportback with over 10k in mods. I said to myself my next car had to be sorted out of the box. i have spent far too much down the years on improving my cars and it needed to stop. I seriously looked at the Rs3. Seriously. First was the price, i have nearly a full spec A45 (49k) bought as an ex demo with 160 miles for 42.2k. A low milage RS3 in the same spec was the wrong side of 56k, i could not justify the price hike and the salesman was, tbh a wanker. The RS3 was a little bit quicker or felt quicker, but not by much. I think it has a bit more low down, it sounded fantastic and has a very well built interior ( bit minimalist for me ) but, quality without doubt. However the Mercedes was better in a few key areas for me. Steering is better buy quite a bit, lovely weight, more feedback and sharper turn in. The wheel itself i prefer, nice and chunky its the one out of the SLS i think, with the alcantara in the right place. Seating postion is better, as are the seats ( by allot) and the brake's are on another level. The Rs3 squirms all over the place under heavy braking where the 45 does not. Like there's to much front bias which may be down to the 310mm rear disc. The 45 uses 330 at the rear. The car i drove did not have the adjustable damping but seemed to crash over imperfections in the road. The 45 with Amg ride control is sublime imo ( probably not a fair comparison but i though i would mention, my s3 was the same. ) RS3 is a quality car and easier to live with I'm sure, but is a bit of a 1 trick pony rapid in a straight line not so good under braking and corners. The 45 has more of a focused personality which i like, looks more aggressive with aero kit and If i want to do the odd track day would be a much better choice imho. It just feels like more of an event to drive. Don't get me wrong i like the Rs3, but for now A45 sits better with me. Its my first Mercedes so i would not class myself as a fanboy ethier. Both great cars, but i guess its all subjective. :-)
A45 sounds like a hair dryer!!! Nothing more to say!!!
I test drove one some time ago, yes it's quick but it felt underwhelming and a little life less. The star is definitely the 5 pot engine. it's so easy to the drive the car fast and I think it doesn't really challenge you, It's as if the car wants to be the star of the show and not you.

My missus ask my once when my friend parked his brand new audi s3 outside why not audi s3/rs3. (I own bmw 135i) I sat in audi and I loved that car. Sound of that engine is amazing. So I said to her that I will explain that like man to man will do. Audi is amazing car in every single way like most beautiful and amazing supermodel on the world and I would love to live with her happily. On the another way bmw 135i is like amazing perfect pornstar. Bmw is amazing and more fun. She totally understood why my bmw is parked outside of our house.
Entertaining viewing Joe. I love my m135 but if I had of had the extra cash I would have bought the rs3. That engine sounds amazing and I would have purchased the car just for that reason alone. But hay nothing wrong with a BMW straight six and rear wheel drive!
I've got them Super Sport seats in my A1 and absolutely love them haha.
I've driven several of these at Audi Showcase Events... great fun...
There is no comparison between this and the RS focus, if you want quality the Audi wins by a country mile.I personally think the interior of the ford is abysmal, think it was designed by a six year old!

Cracking review Joe (again!) And a cracking car but £50k!! With discount an m140i manual is sub £26k! That's a tough sell. Agree totally about the A45.

Great review, and very useful since most people who want a sports car either look at M135/M140i's or RS3's or A45 AMG's. This will make their choice easier

Weird seeing this. My journey started with a test drive of the RS3, then the CH vid, then your vids. Price and your vids took me from RS3 thoughts to order an M140i. Now you're driving what started it all off for me. It was one of these RS3's exhaust note on tickover in a car park that made me ditch my RR !!! Awesome Joe !!

my only gripe with the rs3 is that its only available in 5 door
It should come as a sedan in the UK too! I am calling my dealer in the US every week asking about a spec order sheet :)

Joe Achilles I did have an S3 on order myself around 6 months back... specced it up (stupid) to 42k and then had a panic attack - backed out. So glad. Just couldn't justify 40k+ on a hatch. 35k and I have all the machine I need.
Great video! Considered a Mk2 RS3 a while back but this Mk3 looks like a beast. Heard good things re the TTRS as well...

Cheers man! Yeah you say that but the last thing this car lacks is Power, I cant see the 400 giving you better turn in grip which is the only thing the RS3 still slightly lacks!
Joe Achilles try and get a hold of the new Audi ttrs for a comparison that's got the new aluminium block 5 pot with 400 bhp again l like your honest test drives with cars that are within a lot people's financial reach, Ps Audi stopped making the RS3 Sportback last summer

My only issue with the Haldex Quattro system is that it is massively front wheel drive biased and can only shift a maximum of 50% of the power to the rear wheels hence why they're renowned for understeer. I don't know about the A45's four wheel drive system but BMW's xDrive is much better at shifting the power between axles, managing nearly 100% to the rear if need be.Having said that the RS3 is still a fantastic piece of engineering and to me, as an all-rounder beats the likes of the A45 and M140i

Joe Achilles having bought a M135i with full M performances exhaust, I've realised how involving the great sound is. I wouldn't get sick of this 5 pot noise, ever.
Its better than the Golf tho...this is the majority consensus and lap times
i know its minor.. but would like to see Audi offer keyless start as standard especially on a car like this

liked the video but to me this is more rs3 impressions rather than a review. I already know it's a practical 4wd that you can use for family duties but I am no better informed what it's like to drive. I appreciate that it's not your car and the conditions were cold and greasy but more corners and views of the road are needed, describing of the dynamics, how the car feels and how it makes you feel. can I suggest you do some of these reviews without the owner or anyone else in the car so you can form your own opinion. this is kinda like to mates talking about how cool his new car is and because he's doing you a favour letting you drive his car your not going to be brutally honest about the bad bits of the car. That would be my constructive criticisms and what I would be looking for. Love your videos and keep up the good work. I have a m240i on order so have enjoyed many of your B58 related videos. I also had an m2 on order but decided it wasn't worth the extra money and the m240 does what I want it to anyway.

Hi Joe, so in your opinion is the RS3 worth the extra money over the M140i? Did it feel faster? I appreciate the cabin is of a better quality but would you be prepared to pay the extra money for the RS3?
When you factor in M140 discounts and the near £20k price difference, no way IMO. The 5 pot motor is a masterpiece, but not worth the premium they ask. It's definitely bigger inside compared to a 5 door 140, so as a small rapid family wagon it starts to make some sense, also a great all year weapon, but then you have the Golf R. This usually starts arguments with die hard Audi fans, but from a rolling start 15-20mph, I believe there would be nothing in it between this car and a ZF 140. Cheers
How do you feel about this compared to the M2? I was considering both, but would rather a coupe than an hatch.
How do the exhaust/power feel comparatively?
As I say in the video, the M2 is a proper sports car, the RS3 is a more rounded package that doesn't shine when you're at 8-10 tenths...
really cool car! I have heard about problems with the brakes wearing out, as in replacing brake discs after 5000km

I've driven quite a few Audi models (all none-rs) over the last two years and they are indeed superb cars. However I can't help but feel disappointed about the steering feel in every single Audi model that I drive. Is the steering rack in this one any better than the ones found in the normal A models and how would you rate it compared to the Focus rs?
Finn T. Agreed! Audi build buatiful high quality products that seem to lack excitement. This one did have the variable steering rack which really doesn't do much for feel, but it does make the front end feel more pointy. Their biggest downfall in my opinion (also steering related) is dreaded understeer :-( The Focus RS is brilliant at everything the Audi isn't and vice versa really. Cheers

Great review Joe, not really an Audi fan as a previous BMW 130 owner but understand and appreciate the rs3, if a little expensive. If there was a car with BMW dynamics and Audi interiors that would be perfect!

Those seats are Super Sport seats and not Bucket seats. Buckets were not available on that generation of RS3.

I think from a slow rolling start there would be little in it, I think the 140 would start pulling away once over 70-80 mph though... Massive guess work though, maybe I need to do a drag race with Sam :-)
Joe Achilles i can confirm the rs3 pulls...but not a lot. the rs3 trap speeds we are talking a few kph at the strip. from a stop the rs3 is significantly quicker though.
m140 is fantastic value, but can't beat that 5cyc warble

Looks like real-world the RS3 is a better every day car, especially in this pants weather we are all having. The exhaust sounds nice for sure, but it's not a 6 cylinder, that's for sure.

Another interesting video Joe. I see this car no longer appears on the Audi UK configurator, so presume will be superseded by a new model. Saloon version to appear soonest.
Cheers man! Yeah they stopped making the RS3 Hatch last summer apparently, Saloon will be interesting, although the last thing this car needs is more power, hopefully they somehow dial out some understeer.
Yes, by comparison, the understeer on the S3 steered me even further (no pun intended) towards the M135i. Strange the Golf R is so sharp and the S3 so blunt (relatively speaking) steering-wise - confirmed forever by that Chris Harris video.
For an all weather daily, i would definitely buy a 5dr ///M140i xDrive 8spd over the RS3. This has the greatest sounding exhaust of any sub 100k car but i hate understeer so much :)

that's what a friend of mine who considers buying a ttrs told me.. I can't guarantee that this information is correct.. I couldn't find any confirmation online so far.. bizarrely no 5 cylinder Audi can be configurated. yep!

Excellent review. I disagree with most of it though... haha. Really horrible looks but the saloon will soon address that. Handling is an understearfest but the sound, it is to die for! Keep up the good work. 👍
Horrible looks!? It looks amazing and most people even till this day agree that the 8v PFL is the most aesthetically and aggressive looking one out of the bunch.

I would take the hatch everyday of the week, more practical and IMO much cooler than the TT. Saying that, Ive heard the TT understeers less and has better handling all round.

Great video again! I'm currently looking for a new car and have tested an M240i but waiting on an S3 at my local audi to take that out. Any thoughts between those two? Would be my only vehicle, otherwise I'd probably stump up the extra and go for the M2!!
Cheers man! The M240i is in a different league in terms of straight line performance, from a rolling start I think it would pip this RS3 too! The 240 has better, more playful handling too. The S3 will offer you a better cabin, all weather grip and a hatch practicality. You're obviously not a 140 fan?
Never really taken to the look of the 1 series if I'm honest. Might be worth heading back and checking one out though. I actually didn't plan on testing any BMW's, went and sat in an M2 and the salesman suggested the 240i..... my mind was blown! I hadn't looked into it, so couldn't believe the performance when I put my foot down! In my mind I'm hoping I love the drive of the S3 since I like the cabin so much, but having driven the 240i I would definitely not hesitate to get one of those instead should it not feel right in the audi.
Steelster I drove the 140i and the S3 the 140i was by far the better car and seating position was much better. Just ordered my new M140i for March delivery.

Really hard to say! The FFRS is better on the limit and probably more outright fun, the RS3 is just such a rounded (but pricy) package, Hmmm......

It's hard to give an honest opinion when the owner is sitting next to you. The RS3 is just a numb tool for drivers who can't really drive.
As for the RS6 comments. LOL. Nobody is going to take the RS3 over the RS6 and the RS3 won't touch the RS6. It's only got another 240bhp.

Sorry that you never got around to test driving the R , as you mentioned in your Focus RS mk3 video.
Perhaps you could get your hands on a 2017 Facelifted R and do it some justice.
Perhaps you held back on the Golf R mk7, as you owned the M135i.
