- The 747 is something amazing to spot from the outside, but being on board is a whole other story! Today we welcome you onboard "Qantas 2907 Heavy", a service that departs and arrives in Melbourne, via Antarctica.. This explains the slightly longer than normal takeoff roll, we had a full load of fuel on board due to strict legal requirements being so far from a suitable alternate.
Flying onboard the 747 is one hell of an experience, having flown on Qantas 737s, 767s, A330s, A380s and now the 747 I can certainly say she is the pick of the bunch and lives up to her name as queen of the skies! The ride was the smoothest I have ever experienced, definitely the most refined aircraft that I have ever flown on!
After taking off to the south out of runway 16 we travelled onward and upward over the city before passing through the cloud layer and breaking out on top, simply breathtaking!!
For those of you who may be interested we will have a video up soon showing antarctica from the air, so stay tuned!
We do apologise for the talking of fellow passengers that were onboard, suffice to say they were also enjoying being on board and seeing the city of Melbourne from overhead!

Always amazes me how much of a workout the wings get on takeoff. As well as taking all the engine thrust they have to flex up and down - and they're full of fuel! Incredible engineering.
+Robbie Anderson It sure is amazing, I still can't get my head around it.. Simply phenomenal!
Whatn amazing onboard video from this outstanding airplane! Thumbs up!!

Great Video Bud. Awesome sound, shame it wasn't RRs, but ah well the GE CF6s still sound great.
+scotrail82 I was also a bit disappointed but the Extended Range 747s in QF's fleet only have CF6s and we required the ER model for this flight

+Syed Hoque Antarctica was amazing!! Full vid coming this weekend :D
HOLA AMIGO GENIAL
+commander402 Thanks!
Nice work guys! Can I ask what camera you were using and in particular, how do you hold the camera steady against all the bumps that occur when taxiing? I tried a hand held video camera on night and day sequences and both suffered from excessive camera bounce, even with the "anti-shake" software used after. Is it as simple as placing the camera on the window sill and letting the camera bounce with the aircraft giving the impression that all is smooth? I would appreciate your comments so I can try better next time (I rarely get to fly... sniff...).
+Vaughan Williamson Thanks mate, i try keep the camera 'floating' in my hands, absorb the bumps of the aircraft. Don't rest the camera against the wall/window etc as it adds a lot of vibration. I suggest relaxing as much as you can, and trying to keep movement fluid. Hope this helps!!
Awesome so whats that special flight were you selected or something
+SydneyAirportCapturer HL Yep!
A heavy load of fuel but also no baggage!!!!
+astra686 Very true!
While taking off this aircraft did not make a Roaring sound really very surprising!
it always takes a while to taxi out to the main runway at mascot..
Same situation down in Melbourne when taxiing to runway 16 :)
Is this aircraft powered by rolls royce Rb-211 engine?
where were u heading to?
+Hans Grant Antarctica sightseeing flight
Were you seated in Business class?
+PlanesLOVER787 Unfortunately not, just the very first row of premium economy :)
