The prequels are greatly helped by the Clone Wars series, supplementary novels, video games and such that released alongside them and afterwards for years, and it the reason it's my favorite era. The OT era also benefits from the many EU novels and games in the New Republic era and onwards. Then you have the Old Republic, and so much more. The thing that alienates the awful Disney sequels, is that they are popcorn flicks first and foremost, and don't feel like they're part of a wider universe, not having nearly as many well made stories about them, so they will always be the black sheep of the franchise forever.
