I use cereal boxes all the time. I make it even easier by using 2 boxes. I leave the center part on. Cut off some of it to right width. Do the same with another box. Then lay the middle part of one on to the other. Instant spine. Then use the other 2 sides of the box to glue on to other 2 sides of cover. Double all around. Done.
I'm sitting here laughing because I was thinking, "how on earth did this pop up in my recommended feed?" I do uv resin crafting and you just said welcome to to everyone no matter how you got here etc… it just struck me as funny since that was exactly what I was thinking! I also love how you measure… I do the same exact thing… this is really kinda cool because back when I was going to university, (30 years ago) I worked up in the history archives and I took care of the really old books that needed to have their spines fixed or covers repaired, etc… i went through a LOT of cereal boxes!!! The library dean thought I was absolutely mental when I went to him and asked him if he could bring me his cereal boxes from home. I had asked a lot of the staff to do the same. When he asked me why, I told him that cereal boxes were the best source of chipboard and I was using them to fix the old archival books that needed repaired. Oh holy moly, he about went through the roof until I sat down three books in front of him that I had repaired, 2 with cereal box materials and one with the last of the mats we had on hand upstairs in the archives. I asked him to see if he could tell which had been made with what he described as "proper" materials. He got it right the third time lol… there were only three books I sat in front of him… I think he half expected to see "Tony the Tiger" or the leprechaun from "Lucky Charms" on the covers of the books lol… Well, from that day on, I had a lot of cereal boxes flattened out and brought up to me… I also saved the library a lot in material costs by using those donated cereal boxes! I really enjoyed repairing those old books. Your video brought back some really fond memories. Thank you!
Wow! Your a dynamic teacher! You sound just like me when I talk to myself but you have the courage to do it here on youtube! I love your work! Thank you.
You cracked me up! I love that you have minions and speak to inanimate objects and, they answer you! Enjoyed your video and how you roll. Pam, you rock!
Pam, you are A-blast to have on the TV screen through this RUclips platform while I'm scraping. So inspiring and enjoyable to listen while delving into the creative experience. You're so funny and remind me of myself because I literally ChatterBox to myself most of my day. Of course, I also chatter with the Heavenly Father Sovereign most importantly. Thanks so much for your RUclips presence ❤️.
I don’t know how I discovered you, but I am so glad that I did, and I look forward to each and every video. I had never heard of junk journaling before I saw your site, but I now love making unique, beautiful, even weird, things out of the unexpected and discarded, repurposing, the creative wackiness, and the challenge of problem solving. The process has revealed myself to me, strangely: what I like to be exact about and what I am comfortable letting go, letting things be what they want to be. What used to be my dining room is now a jumbled, but organized, junk journaling “studio.” It’s filled with boxes, envelopes, papers, scads of scraps, bottles of glue, trims, inks, scissors, etc . . . and I love the whole mess! I have found that my brain’s favorite go-to word while creating is “theoretically 🤔.” I think my favorite of yours is, “Oh well . . . that happens. It’s okay.” Anyway, thank you for everything. Your wonderful videos have changed my life, literally: my outlook on things, an new appreciation and contentment with the imperfect, the joy in the process. It almost killed me to gut the first book I repurposed. Late every evening, after all my chores are done and everyone else is in bed, I settle into “junking” and it makes me supremely happy. THANK YOU for sharing your gifts.
Goodness, I relate to everything you said here, I feel exactly the same way. My "craft room studio" is a corner of my bedroom and I too love the whole mess. I've made junk journals for 3 of my 4 daughters and working on the 4th now. I went to a Christian retreat this past week and I finally admitted to my art major friend that I was making junk journals. I showed her pictures of one and she was impressed. I've never considered myself particularly crafty, but she made me feel great! And if I'd never found Pam's videos, I don't know what I'd be doing. I lost my mom, who was living with us, in 2020 and junk journaling has helped fill the void somewhat. I also find joy in the process.
@@cathlynballard8409 I am so sorry for your losses. But I think your idea of adding "those beloved bits" in the beautiful journals is a wonderful idea. What a way to honor thier memories and lives!
Hi, Pam! I watched until the end while I was working on the previous video project of yours that I watched. Lol. You are my favorite craft channel-The Paper Outpost! I love your chatty style while creating with reckless abandon. Your ability to be unafraid to make mistakes has helped me immensely to just go ahead-just do it. ❤
Your comment captured all the reasons I really keep coming back to Pam’s channel: the reckless abandon, mistakes turned into inspiration, and her relaxing chatty style. Her path may not always be the most direct route to complete a project but I definitely enjoy taking the journey with her. ❤
Hey Floppy pants ❤ Such a hilarious video …you accidentally came up on my page and I’m absolutely tickled pink you did 💗Nice to cyber face meet you , I’ve secretly wanted to junk journal for an eternity never finding the time …but you made it look fantabulous,so I’m diving in the deep end I can’t swim …thanx a million .You’re a HOOT🎉
I LOVE every minute of this tutorial and I told my family they are on their own today so I can do this. As far as I know my husband and child have opposing thumbs and can make their own meals for today. My cats do not so I’ll have to take a break and feed THEM. Other than that don’t bug me! Thank you Pam!

Imagine running into you at 3 n the morning! What fun! Never tried a journal! I’m a quilter, appliqué and a variety of other things. Looks like fun to do, so I’ll will be looking around, maybe trying a thing or 2. Thanks!
This is the first time watching one of your videos and I enjoyed it very much. You have a terrific personality. (I'm glad you don't use any of that unnecessary and silly music like some videos use). And your journal is so beautiful! You're so creative! ❤
Turned out great. I love that we can experiment and if it doesn’t turn out we can always fix it. “It’s only a cereal box”. Lol. Sunny looked squeaky clean. ❤️❤️
Great video! I don't know if someone else has mentioned this, but to prevent sliding when taping the front and back cover pieces to the center section, use a small piece of double-sided tape under each piece to keep them sliding around. To keep it from being too sticky and tearing cardboard when lifting, touch the side that will go against paper to the back of your hand first. It will make it less sticky but still holds paper in place.
Howdy….I could listen to you talk all day long. Your ease and comfort with recording is hypnotic and makes you feel like you’re hanging with an old friend.
Just what I needed to get a few good laughs (actually, you should be on stage)! I love your daring creativity, too. I'm learning a lot about junk journals. They're fun and so are you.
Pam, I watch RUclips hours a day. Mostly cooking & decluttering for obvious reasons. But I have a box n paper holding issue. So I watch DIY,s with those products always looking for nice inexpensive gifts. Most of the time I think after watching, I’ll never get that 20 minute back. Well, girl, I have so so so enjoyed this hour I have spent with you. And I think I may try these simple box books starting now for Christmas gifts for my family. You kept me glued, no pun intended, to see what the heck you would do next. You have a quirky personality that adds to the entertainment value I love. I believe , you are one of a kind. I consider myself to be conceitedly quirky as well. Crazy as it may sound, I enjoy my own company. And thankfully my hubby of 63 years does too. Will be binging on your other videos. Thank you so much for a happy start to my day. Take care Pam. Hugs❤
I've only discovered your channel today 🌷and it has been utterly delightful! I have never done any creative journaling, pages, or anything even close to this, and I find it fascinating. You make it look actually doable for someone like me, I find myself so charmed by it all that I have started looking around my cottage for bits and bobs! Thank you for introducing me to this craft! Cannot wait to begin 💖
I could watch and listen to you all day. What a great tutorial. I’ve been making journals for a couple of years but this was a very informative video. Thanks Pam. Xxxx
Pam, for needles, I picked up some called big eye bead needles, and once I learned how to thread them, they are amazing! Basically, the whole needle is an eye except for the ends, and they’re a very thin needle. So they fit through almost any size hole. May be something you want to check out if you haven’t already.
I love Pam! This is like crafting with Monty Python. That is a compliment, big time. Seriously, this has upped my game in that I was not learning fixes and pro tips. Other channels tell you how to do things without letting you know what can go south. Pam tells you the problems you may encounter and what to do about them. Sometimes I leave the channel playing in the background while making tea and coffee paper. THANK YOU!!
Always fun to see you create & bring us along! I am super! happy that I am not the only one who talks to her papers. Whew! A tip for ends of tape....bend the end that was just cut off back on itself just a little bit & it will make a little handle to grab hold of at next use. Then pull with a smile! 😊
I just found your channel today by accident and I'm so happy! You are so talented! I haven't enjoyed watching a tutorial like this in a very long time. I have wanted to make journals for some time, and now I have a teacher! Thank you for the laughs, and inspiration. I'm subscribed and ready to create!
Have just spent a lovely afternoon watching this all the way through and thoroughly enjoyed every minute! Have long thought about using similar boxes for this purpose and now have the confidence to give it a go, thank you so much, came upon you by accident but have now subscribed and am off to find some more and rifle through my recycling bin! Oh and to have a look at your shops!
You always know that Distress Ink will always come out on her project. Sometimes you just got to know when to stop. But the beauty is, to each her/his own style.
Good Saturday morning Pam! You must be psychic. I just bought a king size fitted sheet (100% cotton!) at the thrift store yesterday (score!) which I only had a vague idea what to do with (but had to have). And of course I already have twelve gazillion cereal and food boxes in the stash. Now, by strange coincidence, here's your video. Thanks for (once again) being here when I need a gentle shove in the right direction! Hey to Papa, Sunny and the Feathered Friends! Cheers from Denver CO!
Pam, you are so fun! I've been gone a long time (quilting) and forgot how great your tutorials are. I'm going to introduce you to my daughter-in-law. So happy to spread the word.
I hung around the entire time and am always sad to see you and Sunny go. I love your attitude. You make me feel better about starting and less fear about so what if I mess up, “it’s only paper” You’re so right. You’re a joy to watch. Loved the look of the dictionary page behind the sheet. Thank you put putting some sunshine in my day. 😁🤗
Watching 01/13/24 Pam... I love it!! Thank you...❤❤ I love going back to your beginnings. You are sooooo much fun, and a very good, relaxed, crafter... With a super positive mindset for this beautiful art of junk journaling! I love watching your videos... and listening to you talk & sing 😂😂 thru your work! Love, love love you...❤🤗😊
LOL Hey flappy pants!!! I do enjoy watching your process and you always remind me to relax with my process and that everything doesn't have to be so exact and precise!
I love making something out of things that would otherwise go in the trash. I use Aldi's dog bone boxes. I find they are a perfect size & since I have three dogs, I'm never looking for cardboard 👍🐾🐶 (keep up the good work Sunny 😉)
Hey Floppy pants! I always love seeing Mr. squeaky pants! Sonny I’m so proud of you for learning to swim have fun and be safe! Pam I really like this journal. Seeing the paper under the sheet is so cool! Have a great weekend! Hugs🥰
Good morning! Pam I love watching you. You have great ideas. I save almost all my cereal and cracker boxes. The frozen pizza boxes are also great. You can get several covers out of them...different sizes. I also cut tags out of them... My favorite part of your videos is seeing your desk and all the stuff at your finger tips. Just love you! Thanks for sharing.
You always make me laugh & I really like your energy, you sound like you run on coffee and Redbull all day and that’s what I like, I struggled with my mood and sometimes feel lazy or sad to even start journaling, just by clicking on your video and your Hello makes me feel better and look forward to the day and journal with reckless abandon. Thank you Pam🥰💗.
Yes ear entertaining have a great personality and really seem to be having fun over there! I wouldn't know where to begin but this is very enjoyable that turned out really cute and like you said lace going down the the spine would be very pretty 🦋💛🧡🦋
Thank you so much for sharing I have never really enjoyed watching anyone making scrapbooks or journals but I am absolutely really enjoying watching you create these books not only are you keeping a smile on my face but you're keeping me laughing I really enjoy this oh and by the way I'm new to your channel and loving it ☺️ so happy 😁 I dropped on your channel 😊 lol 😆😊
I love this I have a ton of old sheet music I brought from a book sale at Winchester cathedral where I live which would look amazing through some old net curtain
Oh my goodness Pam... it is 1120pm here in Australia, but you have my laughing so much I have to watch to the end and see how things turn out! Love your personality!
So much fun today. We’re around the same age. Your sayings and Sally two pants etc. are things I say. Love the way this journal came out. Thank you for all the tips. Enjoy you and Sunny. Have a wonderful day.

I am so grateful you created this tutorial! I have looked EVERYWHERE for one that showed the three stringed spine!! So thank you! I am definitely subscribing! Thank you I also love how you talk along as you work. LOL and when you zoomed out to show your desk, I have to admit I was relieved to see I'm not the only one with the "working" look!
Good morning Pam! 💕Pam and coffee, my fav way to jumpstart my Saturday. 👍 I love my food box stash. And from the looks of the stack in my kitchen pantry, it’s time I used some of them. And soon. 😆😆 Have a great weekend Flappy Pants and all!

Good morning! Great project. I have that triple thick acrylic glaze in a spray form. I’ve used it to varnish paintings but now I want to try it for a journal cover. I can’t wait to see what happens.

I just found your channel today by accident and I'm so happy! You are so talented! I haven't enjoyed watching a tutorial like this in a very long time. I have wanted to make journals for some time, and now I have a teacher! Thank you for the laughs, and inspiration. I'm subscribed and ready to create!
Same here! My sentiments exactly.
I really enjoy watching you improvise! Helps all of us realize you don’t toss when something goes awry. !! :)
What a great journal. I never tire watching you assemble a journal. I learn something new every time. Thank you 😊
Good Saturday morning Pam!
I would get out my acrylic paints and do a painting on the gesso parts of the cover. What a fabulous journal tutorial.
I love it!! Thank you...❤❤
I love going back to your beginnings. You are sooooo much fun, and a very good, relaxed, crafter... With a super positive mindset for this beautiful art of junk journaling! I love watching your videos... and listening to you talk & sing 😂😂 thru your work! Love, love love you...❤🤗😊

Pam! You are so much fun, life and joy! I love your lessons and enthusiasm. Hi flappy pants and adorable Sunshine!
I love making something out of things that would otherwise go in the trash. I use Aldi's dog bone boxes. I find they are a perfect size & since I have three dogs, I'm never looking for cardboard 👍🐾🐶 (keep up the good work Sunny 😉)
I LOVE Recycling with Boxes….. I used a cheese cracker Box…. Was perfect Pam

I never get tired of watching the process, ty Pam!
I KNEW that ginger snaps box would come in handy 🤣🤣👍🏾

Love how this journal turned out! Beautiful cover with the humming bird.
The close-up view shows the texture of the fabric as well as the words on the pages. I like that a lot! Thanks for the good ideas and demo!
I MADE IT TO THE END! And what a beautiful job. Am certainly going to try this. So much fun watching you work Pam. Thank you.

Could watch you all day! Love the journal!
Thanks for sharing.
i just recycled a stack of cereal boxes then found these videos. omg all the things i want to creat now!

This is such a joy to watch!! I crochet, but I’m a “crafty” person and would love to do this!! My mother would have been really good at this if she’d known about this ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Your journal looks amazing Pam. I’m in Australia and I have taught myself to make journals from watching your videos and others. Love your bright and happy attitude which in turn does the same for me. Thank you for all the time you spend to teach us.
I love the way this little book turned out! Good job 👍🏻
Good morning! Great project. I have that triple thick acrylic glaze in a spray form. I’ve used it to varnish paintings but now I want to try it for a journal cover. I can’t wait to see what happens.
