    Many people here find sky burials disgusting because their worldview is limited, only considering cremation and traditional burial as acceptable methods of handling the body after death. I argue that sky burials are a more compassionate way to handle the body after death. In sky burials, the vultures are fed, which are seen as lower beings. In Buddhism, it is believed that by sacrificing yourself for lower beings, you can achieve a higher state of life, benefiting both yourself and those you have sacrificed for.
    Not only that, but sky burials may also be more compassionate than cremation and regular burial. With regular burial, the ceremony is done with very sad emotions, and oftentimes after burial, the body is only left there to rot. With cremation, you are basically burning the corpse to ash, and it could be seen as cruel and disgusting. But with sky burial, it is done with a solemn yet hopeful tone, and you also help the vultures whether they need any help or not.

      I think the only part of this that bothers me is to see them carry around pieces of it to give to the birds, it feels unsanitary to me. I'm sure it was cleaned well and I'm only bothered by it bc of my upbringing. It's much better than burial or burning the body.

    I respect ones beliefs. I myself do not want my remains to end up in a box in the ground. I have seen where graves ended up with buildings on top. With cremation my atoms will be dust and a part of this world forever but with due respect, To end up being bird crap coming out of a birds ass on a rock, I just don't get it

    Why we do sky burial? buring our life we do attach so much on our body.you can see some time we try to make our body white and some times black, fat or thin. Because of those desire we spend lot of time and resource and other creatures life.We Tibetan think those way of life are unreasonble and unfair for the other creature and other living who live together with us and srounding and interdependent.Interdependent is one of our Buddhism view,so we respect to the water and trees and mountains and other creature of animal. we just use them with respect.but never distroy to satisfy our unlimited human desire.Those are way if our ancetors life style and Buddhism Phylisophy and theory for human life.Also we know that after person die, most of their sub concious leave the body in three days.There is also Buddhism Science to investigate weather sub-concious leave or not. After leave from the body then we do sky burial as generosity paramita practice.we do not try to spend wealth for the dead body insteed of that we offer to vulture as do tractice of generosity in some place offer to fish in water and some place under ground to insects. Generosity is one of six practice of Boddisattva. we do not keep it as precious thing.

    Hi, our practice of sky burial is related to our religion and beliefs. We believe that our bodies are mere container for this human life and when we die, our conscience (spirit as some call it) leaves this body and goes to another container (whether human or animal or a demi-god or god - all depending on our merit “karma” of this life and our past lives). This is what you normally call as reincarnation. That’s why the body is not important and thus our ancestors believed it best to make it useful by feeding animals who need food just like how we need food. Therefore, there was nothing unusual about it, but I understand the actual chopping of these dead bodies is pretty grisly to see, but then that’s why sky burials are done by a certain group of people (for generations) and completely away in a remote place like the mountaintops so people won’t have to see it. So, if you overcome the grisly imagery of this ritual, it’s otherwise a benevolent and the final act of kindness of this person to benefit another being - vultures in this case :)

    This kind of funeral is a tradition of ancient Iranians followed by Iranian trips known as sakas. They were living in Northern areas from north Europe to the northern parts of India, some parts of China. They used to make some hills with under earth rooms for burning their lost ones. Then Zarathustra 's age came across and their traditions changed. Buddha's name , who was from the same tribe is shakyamoni , which means : the Wiseman of the sakas. So these are all more complicated !!
    By the way : the origin of these all has a name ! It's polite to mention people's name when talking about them. Iran.

    • @saudiphilippines
      @saudiphilippines 5 месяцев назад +3

      It's not really cruel, since the person is already deceased. They're just feeding the vultures with the body, which is seen as a way for the deceased to return to nature. It's a cultural practice that's done with the person's permission and actually helps the local ecosystem. So, it's not as harsh as it may seem at first glance.
      In Tibet, they don't always choose sky burials - sometimes the rocky, frozen ground makes it the only option. But it's actually a pretty efficient and caring way to lay a body to rest. Plus, it's a cool thought that even after you're gone, you're still giving back in some way.
