He modeled his behavior after the band because at that time to a 17-yr-old they were the pinnacle of cool and thought that if he were to be out as his normal self he wouldn't be accepted by his peers or others in the industry.
Eh I'll probably get downvoted, but he's not always humble... He does have some ego moments but he does try to squash them as much as he can. You can notice it in interviews at times, primarily when flea, kiedis, or Chad are also present in the interview. He rambles about something and they get quiet. But he tries so hard not to have an inflated ego. It's interesting, I want to see a psychologist study his brain. I think we all have some level of inner egotism that can't be shaken fully.
