    Shakirova is a very brilliant ballerina, technic and artistic, I think she has more personality than all the young promising ballerinas that Russia is producing every time ! but I don't like the outfits, specially the pancakes tutus, glistening with crystals, they are too big and they bounce too much. I prefer the ones of the New York City Ballet, plain white, fluffy, and smaller (exemple on John Gifford YT channel)
    Also, Kimin Kim is an excellent dancer but he performs in this Balanchine ballet like he is dancing in Don Quixote, to mechanical and demonstrative, it lacks sensitivity and sophistication for me.

    Love these dancers, but knowing Balanchine as I do, this was painful to watch, esp the corps. Usually the problem with Balanchine is the "shape" of the attack, but the corps is as a group not even keeping up with the music. Alternatively, they're interpreting "being on the music" in different ways so are really not together. This is one of the corps that defines perfection in Kingdom of the Shades, so you know they *can* stay together. Can I guess intelligently that the 2nd movement looked really good?

      @@raymonda5476 That is a total myth. If you want to watch the Russians doing fast choreography, just watch Pharaoh's Daughter or Marco Spada. Frankly, I don't think I have seen an American Balanchine dancer who maintains technique during fast Balanchine choreography.

      @@normamimosa5991 Perhaps it's not a question of speed but how a dancer is trained to sync with the music. I find it frustrating to watch Russian (and many English) dancers perform Balanchine as well as they BEGIN a step on a note instead of hitting the peak of a step (which is usually its completion) on the note. It's the difference between dancing to (i.e. following) the music rather than dancing WITH the music. The beauty of Balanchine is that his choreography at its best is the visual manifestation of the music and it doesn't work when the steps follow the music.

    • @normamimosa5991
      @normamimosa5991 3 года назад

      @@insaelliott1318 I started a lengthy response, but decided there just isn't enough space and time for a conversation about Balanchine on this thread. Let me be up front. I am not a fan of Balanchine and particularly not the NYCB, both overrated, particularly the NYCB today. Insularity likely a prime reason for its decline. If any dancers can bring relevance back to his choreography, it is the Russians, particularly those from his alma mater.
      If Balanchine had been alive when the USSR collapsed and had the opportunity to see Uliana Lopatkina perform his choreography, I think he would have thought he had already reached heaven. Her performances are the epitome of his his quest in America. She doesn't just become one with the music. She transforms into the soul of the music. Her impeccable training, extensions, flexibility and fluidity, not seen in American Balanchine dancers, are the foundation that allow such beauty to happen.
      As for the spee, I disagree that Russian dancers are unable to hit the peak of a step on the note. Again their impeccable training allows them to hit peak on peak, if you will, without becoming jerky, taught and tight, aka NYCB dancers. There is not a male dancer today who equals Kimin Kim (perhaps other than Leonard Sarafanov, now older) in whatever choreography he tackles. I agree the corps in this excerpt is not up to standard, in sizing or alignment - so atypical of the Mariinsky. I would love to know the story behind the performance.
      Perhaps more conversations about Balanchin, as we both land on the same YT videos in the future.

      @@normamimosa5991 it’s understandable if you dislike Balanchine that you wouldn’t value his intent and style. Everyone has their own taste. But please understand for those who love his choreography why watching it danced off tempo can feel wrong, like Italian food without the garlic.

    This is not my favorite ballet. It seems stiff, and several of the ballerinas, including Shakirova, have an occasional exaggerated dip of the chin that breaks their lines. I don’t remember seeing Shakirova do that in later videos, so maybe it’s something that’s been trained away? Shows how much a dancer’s work may continue to be perfected over time!

      The Mariinsky and the Bolshoi both dance Balanchine at a snail's pace. This ballet was originally created by Balanchine for the Paris Opera Ballet (not NYCB), which probably accounts for why it looks "elementary" here with the Mariinsky performing it at their tempo. If you want to see Balanchine at his speed, the correct speed, which was usually the composer's tempo, (i.e. allegro), one must either go to Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center, Le Garnier or Miami City Ballet, not St. Petersburg or Moscow.
