  • After picking up a Royal Enfield Classic 500 for an upcoming day trip, we rode over to a Balinese home that's been converted into a little coffee and tea spot. The owner's a motorcycle fan and has a classic Vespa and Honda S90.

I love my 2018 Royal Enfield Classic 500 in chrome green. I really love it. I bought a Bonneville T120 Black Gold Line for longer, faster rides, but I just couldn't bear to give up my RE. Now I use the RE for shorter, local, country rides and it makes me grin like nothing else. You're right; it's awful on motorways and for all-day riding - you lose feeling in your fingers and toes from the vibrations, but for country lanes there's just nothing like it. I hope I have it forever.
Edit: Just seen the end when you're trying to kick start it. You 're squeezing the clutch in, so it's never going to work. Ignition on, in neutral, leave the clutch alone. Kick it gently, no effort, once or twice until you feel it 'bite' then a good, confident kick down and it'll start first time. Maybe second time. ;)

Freddy, for gods sake man don’t hold the clutch in when you are trying to kickstart a motorcycle, the process is, ignition on, gearbox in neutral, slowly bring the engine to top dead centre (that’s where the most resistance is) once there give it a little bit of throttle then one swift kick should do the trick, if it does not start repeat the process, practice makes Perfect.

I've got HG Wells, my Classic 500. I've commented about him before. A bike to be cherished but not put on a pedestal. It needs ridden regularly, just to keep that smile on your face.
I use mine on all roads without any issue, however it really makes sense on flowing single-track up a beautiful Highland glen. It won't win any races, just hearts. I'm looking to buy a 650 Super Meteor to replace a Benelli I bought new last year. The 500's staying though.
What you're feeling is nostalgia for a time when the world wasn't so frantic. The 500 takes you there, in some style.
Keep up the vlogs Freddie, you're a natural at this.

Hello Freddy,I had a Bullet 500 efi on a 2017 reg. It was a euro 3 bike which still had a drum brake rear wheel. Great bike, cruised along comfortably at 50 with the long stoke thump of the exhaust note and lots of people would come over and chat whenever I stopped. Usually older guys who used to ride Enfield’s but I was once followed and flagged down by an Indian couple, the husband used to ride one in India and didn’t know they were imported into the U.K. the new 350 models are great, the Meteor, Hunter and Classic and are superb value for money bikes.

Great video. A bit harsh on the Classic 500. Given the bleaching of the kill switch, this bike has spent most of its five years outside in the elements and it still looks great! As for the 'All New 350' being better? Well, I'd agree if you were talking about 1990's Bullets but the post 2008 one's with the unit construction engine are a totally different kettle of fish. They are also over 30 percent more powerful than the new 350, both in torque and BHP. They have hydraulic tappets, so no expensive 'tank off' servicing, unlike the new 350. The Classic 500 has glass and polished metal instrument dials, unlike the new 350, which are plastic and chromed plastic. The post 2008 Classic 500 has a fit and finish every bit as good as the all new 350 and my kick start works every time. Especially when the ignition is fully switched on 😉

Great Video guy’s & brilliant to see the Royal Enfield 500 in its Natural environment, the rust issues pointed out I think is more to do with lack of care especially in a country like Bali what with its damp & humid weather my pals 10yr old Bullet is mint tho he is nuts about keeping it that way & why not! Your right about the ‘Royal Enfield’ & the nostalgia it seems to bring to oneself there’s something about it that nobody can put into words yet they can somehow’feel it’ I don’t think any other motorcycle company can do that? The Royal Enfileld "Bullet" is a name ascribed to at least two separate Royal Enfield motorcycles. The modern one dates back "only" to 1948 with its radical oil-damped swinging arm suspension, telescopic front forks and 4 speed gearbox.

Lovely coffee shop all so interesting. Not an Indian in sight to kick start that lunker. Back in the day my day, all was kickstart for the Gileras, Nortons, BSAs etc. oh and Kawaskis etc.. Fortunately or unfortunately it was friends who had bikes while I just got rides to the beach or gave VW rides because I snuck the car out.

My Bullet Classic Trials is bedding in nicely and gives a pure motorcycle experience. Rev limiter stops acceleration at an indicated 70mph. I never stop smiling when on it. Run in carefully they don’t ( well mine doesn’t) vibrate anywhere as badly as road testers claimed. It is even better than my old GS650 was.

As a recent convert to Royal Enfield, it is the feel and the character of their bikes. Horsepower doesn't matter because it feels good? I had similar feelings from old Yamaha XS 650s, of which I have had 4. And I always loved the kickstart on them. Sorry Freddie 😂

Others have commented on your incorrect kick start procedure but should you attempt it again I’d definitely recommend you put on a proper pair of long motorcycle boots (if you have a pair in Bali). If that bike kicks back you really don’t want it to whack you on an unprotected shin 🇬🇧

You went there didn't you Fred 😀.. the classic 500! My bike + 2018 the same year as mine too. Some days you just want to scream at it 😂.. but all is forgiven when that single cylinder thud kicks over and the english countryside beckons. A bike full to the brim with character, nothing else will ever come close 🤍. Enjoy the rest of your trip man and keep that great content coming ✌️

I spent my youth working on dirt bikes and pushing them up a nearby hill to bump start them on the way down. those old two strokes would groan for minutes of fiddling with the throttle and choke before finally catching fire and then off on adventure. sometimes kicking would never suffice.

    Ah the lovely thump!
I really enjoyed mine for a couple of years but it didn’t give the level of power you need in U.K. these days . Perfect for those lovely roads. Would have been great on the roads l just came home on in the west of Ireland with turf in the middle of them. My softail slim was a little heavy but felt like a bigger brother to the Enfield .

Spot on- the thump characterises the whole bike once you fire it up. This one I had did not like the rain (it cut out a lot on the big day’s riding we did😳).
I loved it though- very special bike.

Its not that hard to kickstart the bike, first kick for compression, second is for starting the engine, the trick is to use body weight to kickstart the bike on the 2nd kick. Btw I have the 2016 gt 535.

If you can, get your hands on the upswept silencer/exhaust end can that RE used to make. I have the 2018 Stealth Black 500 with the upswept silencer and I love it to bits. Toured the breadth of India on it. The torque this generates is so enjoyable. Yes it vibrates, a LOT and top speed is a joke but this is one bike that makes me want to slow down and enjoy the riding while soaking in all the beauty around. And at 80-90 kmph it is absolutely effortless. It's got oodles of "character". One of those bikes which you either love or hate, no middle ground.
I have removed the rear seat and that makes the bike look even more fantastic. I will keep it for a long time to come.

Watching you trying to Kickstart the bike was a bit like a program I watched where they had modern teenagers trying to workout how to use an old round dial telephone, quite funny but also sad ! From someone who started riding before most bikes had electric starters I couldn't see the problem and my own 2018 classic 500 is one of the easiest bikes I have ever owned to Kickstart, a couple of prods WITHOUT the clutch lever pulled in and away she goes ! As you say when my battery failed I could still use the bike, ❤

  • @utharaptortrex

The kickstarter is connected to the gearbox, so if you pull in the clutch you won't be able to turn over the engine. Also, these bikes have a killswitch on the side stand, so you can only get them started with the side stand up.

Freddie looks like you are trying to kick it with the clutch pulled in. You don't do that. Keep hands off the clutch and the kick should ha e resistance. You will find top of the piston stroke when it's hard to push down from the highest point, then go for it. NO CLUTCH 😊, cheers Bob

Hey Freddie! Love your video from a RE Classic 500 owner! Try using the kick start maybe 3/4 times with the ignition off and not engaging the clutch just to get the oil moving, then turn the ignition on and it should start with 2/3 kicks. You might need to do a few more small kicks to get it to TDC.

    Hello Freddie,
    1. do not hand helmet on the mirror, not safe for helmet and mirror Unusually there's two hand grips (one on each side) behind rider seat on which you can hang the helmet nicely, it seems on your bullet its removed.
    2. Kick start, the bike will start in 2- kicks, just do it the right way, even u can start with your hand on a single pump/kick.... u have to master it but....
    good luck.... rgds,
