  • On August 7, Russia and Algeria engage in a diplomatic dispute at the United Nations Security Council. The clash occurs during a meeting focused on women, peace, and security, after Russia raises a controversy surrounding Olympic boxing.
Deputy Russian U.N. Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy criticizes Western countries for dominating the Olympic movement and imposing an LGBT agenda, which he claims harms women’s rights and dignity. He argues that female boxers at the Paris Olympics are being subjected to unfair treatment by athletes who, according to hormonal tests by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), are actually men. Polyanskiy describes this situation as "absolutely repellant."
The controversy involves Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, who were disqualified from the 2023 World Championships following a sex chromosome test by the International Boxing Association (IBA) that deemed them ineligible. The IBA’s authority was removed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2023, which now organizes boxing events for the Paris Olympics. The IOC recognizes Khelif and Lin as women.
The IOC accuses the IBA of financial mismanagement and undue Russian influence. In response to Polyanskiy’s comments, senior Algerian diplomat Toufik Koudri defends Khelif, asserting her identity as a female and dismissing Polyanskiy’s remarks as politically motivated. Koudri states unequivocally that there is no doubt about Khelif’s gender, except among those with a political agenda.
