Dan is really an OG.
Being a collector of design decisions it's one of the most important things to do before to even consider create. This allow us to learn from the mistakes but also from the wins. More than once I've said like "Hey, this is actually a pretty good call, heads up for the designer that was here before me".
YES. Dan hits on one of my biggest gripes around 6:35
too many people play it fast and loose with their words to the detriment of the community (probably for shallow short term SEO gains or Sounding Important). maybe it's just growing pains as a discipline (ofc it takes time to develop language) but i am dying for a shared understanding of "design system" and i pray we land on the one that isn't "a design system is a figma component library"
This is what I really needed to hear (finally got around to listening). I keep worrying SO MUCH or doing a ton of research of what's the best way to approach variables/tokens. It's almost a blocker in decision-making, and I hate it. Start scrappy, bit by bit, but keep scaling in mind to a certain extent. I believe the trade-off is worth it, as long as everyone is on the same page and it makes everyone's lives easier and design more effectively.
45:30 - As much as I enjoy building new components sometimes, I actually enjoy the "librarian" type of work and connected relationships/support work more than anything. One reason why I enjoy this type of role so much.
11:20 preach and BINGO. Ovetta Patrice Sampson put it really well at Config: AI doesn't take risks. Risk-taking is a uniquely human trait. And progress is near impossible if you don't understand when you're toeing a line, don't understand why that line exists, and don't have that excitement and hope in your heart when you think of the good stuff waiting for you on the other side of that line.
These are really great discussions Ridd, thanks for publishing them 🙏

Love the "be a rascal" mentality. When starting the design system work at my company I used to say we were Batman, working in the shadows.
Love this so much lol
